Jonathan Sarfati: These games do not reflect McNabb's strength. He was runner up to New Zealand Champion four times, and was highly placed at other times.

During my teens, the presidency of the Wellington Chess Club was held by a wise and friendly taxi driver and Hungarian immigrant called Frank Fodor (né Fodor Ferenc). He had great respect for the skill of McNabb, a fellow taxi driver.

<Harold McNabb's poker face may be a great asset when he is in trouble, but on one occasion he was noticed writing his moves in the wrong columns.>

Jonathan Sarfati: Zygmunt Frankel wrote in NZ Chess, June 1985, p. 81 (http://newzealandchess.co.nz/nzches...), writes:

“McNabb who tied for second with Lepviikman in 1948 was a very strong player in those years.”

He cites Robert Wade from NZ Chessplayer (Vol. 1 no. 2 Summer 1948 p. 16 http://newzealandchess.co.nz/nzches...) as follows:

“I, personally, fear McNabb’s [Harold McNabb play more than anyone else in New Zealand except perhaps Allerhand’s ([Philipp Allerhand ] another twice NZ Champion— Ed.). Give him an edge and there will be no more chances.”
