Eric Schiller: I'm a bit surprised to see a page dedicated to him. Howery was a close school friend and a great DJ, but never took too well to the game. As I mentioned on the game page, he had just lost to the ...g6, Qxe5+ trick a few times and just desperatly tried something else. The only reason I preserved the game, played in a casual encounter when we were cutting classes, is to show the possible 3-move mate that no one mentions, and to affirm that it actually has been played.
Dec-16-05  BlueMooner: Thanks for that Eric. I played through your draw with Raymond Keene in 1985 - Windy City Invitational B19 Caro-Kann, Classical earlier this evening & enjoyed your notes.

I was persuing through a few things & was genuinely startled to see a 3 move game.

He must have been intimidated or something to lose his concentration in such a manner. I didn't mean to denigrate your friend or anything - I'm no superstar myself! A lowly 1550 (and rising) having had my passion for the game rekindled in the Summer when a friend introduced me to on-line chess.

Most adivce I have read seems to point towards honing my skills at the tactical side of the game which makes sense. I have recently bought 'Mastering Chess tactics' - Neil McDonald & have already felt that I am getting a better overview of games (scanning the board & pieces for both side's opportunties whatever they maybe etc).

Sorry to mither you but would you be able to recommend any books or websites that could assist me in improving my chess - with reference to tactical puzzles/ games etc? As I said my rating on gameknot.com is 1550 so I have plenty of work to do!

Cheers BlueMooner

Eric Schiller: <BLueMooner>Thanks. For tactics I strongly recommend CT-ART 3.0 from Chess Assistant. That is what my students use. As for books, well, I try to write helpful ones, and you can look them over at www.ericschiller.com. Generally I recommend more books on strategy and endgames than on openings. Anytime you read over master games with good notes you'll learn something, and this is one of the more pleasurable ways of improving your game.

egilarne: I have also seen this game played, in my local chess club around 1990. I think the player with the black pieces had been taught that defending against Qh5 / Bc4 with Qe7 was good - and that he remembered it wrong, and played Ke7 instead - - .
Aug-19-08  Quintiliano: Martin Amis mated his father Kingsley in three, as told in his memoirs "Experience". I tried to download the game bur Chessgames won't have it.
