MissScarlett: The Evening Independent (St. Petersburg, FL), January 10th 1933, p.9:

<Mr. Gerwig [...] is a chess player of more than ordinary proficiency. Yes, far more than ordinary. He has met and defeated such players as Emanuel Lasker, when the latter was world champion, later from Jose Capablanca, who wrested the title from Lasker. He outwitted Napier, the champion of Great Britain, while on a pleasure trip to Europe. Mr. Gerwig is well known in the chess world. He is now a resident of St. Petersburg and president of the St. Petersburg Chess club, located over in Mirror lake area.>
