  Tabanus: Chicago Daily Tribune, 11 Feb 1906, p. 4:

<Two games are given here. The first one show the clever victory of Capt. Rogers of Fort Sheridan against the worlds champion Dr. E. Lasker>

Evening Star (Washington), 1 Feb 1907, p. 22:

<Dr Lasker now leads … Marshall resigned after forty-three moves … Quite a number of prominent chess players were present, including … Capt. W. C. Rogers of the 27th United States Infantry, stationed at Cuba,>

Phony Benoni: <Tabanus> This appears to be a different "Captain Rogers" than the one who played at Excelsior 1901. I became curious when the biography mentioned nothing about his being in Milwaukee, and seemed to imply that in 1901 he was on active duty in the Philippines.

So I dug around a bit, and found this from the "Minneapplis Journal", August 19, 1901, in a report on the tournament:

<"Captain Rogers, the Milwaukee veteran, is sixty-eight years of age, long past the period when men enter prolonged tournaments. He is present champion of Milwaukee and was champion of Minnesota in 1898. Lack of physical endurance was the cause of most of his losses., although the captain came up chipper and won his last game.">

That would indicate a birth date around 1833, and that his military service probably dated from the U.S. Civil War.

That paper never mentions any names or initials, but the "Brooklyn Daily Eagle" in its tournament report from September 29, 1901, gives <D M Rogers>. I was obviously in error using <D C Rogers>, and apologize for any misunderstanding that may have caused.

Tabanus: <Phony Benoni> Ah yes. I first thought you was wrong, but DC must be another player.

So be it! He has no games in the database yet.
