FISCHERANDOM CHESS GENERATOR
  position #  random
FEN: brqnkbrn/pppppppp/8/8/8/8/PPPPPPPP/BRQNKBRN w KQkq -

How to Use This Page
  • This page is used for generating a random position to play Fischerandom Chess. Every time you reload this page, or press the new position button, a different position will appear. Just set up a chessboard based on the diagram above, find an opponent, and have fun.

Quick Rules for Fischerandom Chess

  1. Fischerandom Chess is played with a normal chess board and pieces. All rules of Orthodox Chess apply except as otherwise noted.
  2. The initial configuration of the chess pieces is determined randomly for White, and the black pieces are placed equal and opposite the white pieces. The piece placement is subject to the constraints:
    1. the king is placed somewhere between the two rooks, and
    2. the bishops are on opposite colors.
    3. pawns are placed on each player's second rank as in Orthodox Chess.
    There are 960 such configurations.
  3. Castling, as in Orthodox chess, is an exceptional move involving both the King and Rook. Castling is a valid move under these circumstances:
    1. Neither King nor Rook has moved.
    2. The King is not in check before or after castling.
    3. All squares between the castling King's initial and final squares (including the final square), and all of the squares between the castling Rook's initial and final squares (including the final square), must be vacant except for the King and Rook.
    4. No square through which the King moves is under enemy attack.
The movement of the King and Rook during castling should be easily understood by players of Orthodox Chess:
    1. When castling on the h-side (White's right side), the King ends on g1 (g8), and the rook on f1 (f8), just like the O-O move in Orthodox chess.
    2. When castling on the a-side (White's left side), the King ends on c1 (c8), and the rook on d1 (d8), just like the O-O-O move in Orthodox chess.
    3. Sometimes the King will not need to move; sometimes the Rook will not need to move. That's OK.
  4. The object is to checkmate the opponent's King. Have fun!

chessgames.com: Welcome to the chessgames.com Fischerandom discussion forum.
Jan-09-03  Dr Young: this is nonsense
Jan-10-03  Doctor Who: How do you mean?
Jan-10-03  PVS: I assume that the castling rules are designed to get middle game positions similar to chess while still dispensing with theory in the opening.
Jan-10-03  pawntificator: Is there a way to call up a specific configuration so that we can analyze new openings? Like right now...I have configuration #507. If I kibitz about this one can someone else call it up so they can see what I'm talking about?

For instance, I have dubbed the moves 1. e4 Nb6 2 Ne3 c6 3. c3 Isaac's Attack. Well, not really, but there is a whole new world of theory to be explored now.

Jan-10-03  Samuel Maverick: I thought the whole point was to not analyze openings.
Jan-10-03  pawntificator: No, the point is to have new openings that haven't been analyzed to death already, which we can now analyze to death.
Jan-10-03  Samuel Maverick: Here is something from Gligoric's book on the game: There has long been talk of the death of chess, that it would one day be 'played out', but with the use of powerful computer programs and databases in recent years, this fear is being taken very seriously. Computers have greatly accelerated the pace of opening knowledge and ever deeper and deeper preparation is now required - with many chess games effectively starting on move 20 or more. To side step the effect of computers on our venerable game the great American champion Bobby Fischer has devised a form of chess in which the initial starting position of the pieces is randomly changed before each game. Much thought and practical experimentation has gone into the formulation of the new rules of 'Fischerandom' in order to retain all the essential qualities of the classical form of the game- even castling - so that players can once again enjoy pure chess where the only thing that counts is who is the better player on the day. The first all-grandmaster Fischerandom match has already taken place and is predicted to increase the new game's popularity. In this book, the first ever on Fischerandom, the author discusses at length the problems the chess world is facing today - with quotes and opinions from contemporary players, organizers and journalists - and the history of shuffle chess, together with complete Fischerandom rules and a selection of illustrative games.

Sneaky: Some differences I've noticed in Fischerandom, regarding the openings:

Sometimes you can have a "bad bishop" in a corner blocked in by a pawn, which is far worse than any bishop you've ever seen in conventional chess. Don't let that happen to you!

The outlandish plan on moving a pawn in front of a rook then transfering the rook to the 3rd rank, even in the opening, rarely works in normal chess. But in FR you can often get away with it!

I find that d4 or e4 is almost always a sensible opening move, and if the opponent attempts a "strong point" defense (meeting d4 with d5, or e4 with e5) then attacking their pawn with c4/f4 is almost always a gambit worth considering.

Jan-10-03  pawntificator: so is there any chance of making a search field where you can just type in the position number to call up a certain configuration, in addition to the random generator?
Jan-10-03  refutor: this is a very cool feature...

chessgames.com: By the way, in case you're trying to locate it, position #54 is the one that is well known to all of us.
Jan-10-03  refutor: where did you get these position numbers from? is there a list somewhere (e.g. would 54 as the "normal position" mean anything to anyone else) or is it just arbitrary for this site?
Jan-10-03  Chess Champ: ok, is this thing playing or what?
Jan-10-03  Chess Champ: As much as I like Fisher, I can not agree to this FischerRandom, that's not chess - AGAIN THIS MESSAGE GOES TO THE WEBMASTER AND ALL THE PLAYERS, THIS IS A CHESS VARIANT, PERIOD. Chess beauty is gone. There is no more symetry. No more opening balance and proper positioning of the pieces. Balanced proportions; Beauty of form arising from balanced proportions, that is chess, this is the philosophy behind chess, that is the aesthetics of it all, WHY DID THE GAME SURVIVE WITHOUT ANY CHANGES TO THE RULE SINCE LUCENA'S TIMES SINCE 1499 OR 1497 ? I am not going to comment on this anymore and I dont have time arguing with others but Chess Survived because people felt it was played right... The FishcerRandom is destruction of chess, period. It's ok to play it as a variant, dont get me wrong here... But not this way, hey I can come up with million ideas, I can say, well we can add 20 more squares and have Capablanca Variant and add 10 more pawns and have the knight move like a bishop/knight combined with pawns on the rank. Hey guess what, that will be very interesting... But again that is not chess. NOW WHEN I PROPOSED THE LOTTERY ONLY FEW PEOPLE AGREED TO IT, WELL IT'S TIME I MOVE ON WITH THIS TO THE BIGGER WATERS... Many people told me... I already said something about it and I will not repeat myself all over. People tell me: " Hey Champ, what if some stupid opening is drawn?" Ok, cut it out, how many stupid positions are there in Fischer Random and what about castling there... tell me abou it ? HERE'S A SUGGESTION TO THE WEBMASTER:

I AM GOING TO POST ALL OF MY 427 TWO MOVES LOTTERY HERE SOON. I HAVE TO CHECK ON CERTAIN BAD OPENINGS FIRST, * MEANS THE OPENING IS DUBIOUS OR LOOSING AND THERE ARE NOT MANY OF THEM. WHY DONT YOU CREATE A VIEWER WITH MY LOTTERY, ALL YOU HAVE TO DO IS JUST PRESS THAT BUTTON AND THE FIRST MOVE WILL BE DISPLAYED, YEA IT CAN BE RANDOM. I AM SPENING TOO MUCH TIME ON THIS. SO APPRECIATE IT. HERE'S ANOTHER IDEA: ADD AN ENGINE TO MY VIEWER AND LET PEOPLE PLAY THE PROGRAM, WE CAN ALSO INCLUDE THE 0-0-0-0 CASTLE ( THAT'S FORBIDDEN IN CHESS BUT LET'S SEE HOW IT WORKS OUT, MY PGN VIEWER READS THAT CASTLE SO IF SOMEBODY WANTS A VIEWER I CAN FORWARD IT TO THEM ). I AM SURE THE CHESS QUALITY WILL EVEN GO HIGHER AND THE GAMES WILL GET INTERESTING. CHESS FANS, REMEMBER... I LOST LOTS OF MONEY AND TIME ON CHESS, I NEVER, EVER PROFITED AND I AM ONLY DOING THIS FOR THE GOOD OF THE GAME AND FOR ITS GROWTH AND FOR ITS BENEFIT. Remember well.

Many GM's like this and many dont, many players in general but something surely must come about. In order they feel this I must present them why it's good and the first step is creating this Java Viewer. Words are empty without actions.

Jan-10-03  Chess Champ: Pawntificate: You make lots of sense man, even though I learn openings I am not crazy about them like the top GM's are but if I want to study a line it will be pain... and none sense. Symmetry is gone. I dont know why the webmaster is wasting time on this...
Jan-10-03  Chess Champ: That's true, the whole point is not to analyze openings but this is not chess and I NEVER said people should not analyze openings, I am saying memorozing all those chess lines is not chess but knowing chess openings and the ideas and concept behind them is crucial and important in chess. THE top gm's and others have all those lines memorized and that's why they play chess so well, my question and challenge to them is how good would they be if they played my lottery, HOW GOOD WOULD THEY BE AGAINST ANY BETTER COMPUTER? THIS IS THE TRUE TEST OF SKILLS.
Jan-10-03  Chess Champ: Guys, dont worry about the death of chess ok, it will never happen even with the first 20 openings analyzed, that is for the top dogs not for other players just look how many games are still won and lost. I know, I check all the facts, as much as possible. (I dont do newgroups postings though, this is the only site I post, I came across by accident so I thought why not... But I have to see if it's worth my time and energy...)
Jan-10-03  Doctor Who: <WHY DONT YOU CREATE A VIEWER WITH MY LOTTERY> Let me get this straight... you expect chessgames.com to program a special viewer just so you can upload this gigantic list of moves which has something to do with this chess variant that you cooked up yourself?
Jan-10-03  actual: What the..?!
Jan-10-03  actual: so I guess you should still try to open lines for you queen and bishops first and develop you knights??...
Jan-10-03  mdorothy: Does anybody know of any sites where you can play fischerandom chess online?? I just want to try it, and right now the only chance I have of playing chess is against people in my family, and they seem to almost never want to play.

Sneaky: I know that it's an option at http://www.instantchess.com/ but I'm not sure how easy it is to get a game.
Jan-11-03  svpablo: This is not hardly chess
