May-12-06  Hitchhiker: I hope for a second Anand-Topa which is equally brilliant.
May-12-06  artemis: My god!! I did not expect Topalov to win this, but to lose it like that!! This one is definitely going into Anand's next book of his greatest games. Just WOW!
May-12-06  notyetagm: <fromoort: ... Didn't you just tell someone to calm down, it's still early yet?! And now you are talking about a shift in the balance of power?>

I meant "calm down" tournament-wise, quoting what happended to Svidler and Leko at Linares. Two rounds down, eight to go.

I meant a tremendous win for Anand in his personal battle with Topalov. This could be the start of Anand asserting himself as a better player than Topalov.

Two different things.

May-12-06  Caloy: 27..Ng5 is the move of the game. Superb play from Anand..
May-12-06  you vs yourself: I just hope this spanish game and the analysis after it gives Topalov new ideas that he can use in his match against Kramnik.

May-12-06  notyetagm: <Caloy: 27..Ng5 is the move of the game. Superb play from Anand..>

Yes, Topalov missed 27 ... ♘g5! and his position collapsed.

May-12-06  hitman84: Damn!!!!

Have been all day.
I cant believe I missed this game :(

May-12-06  mang00neg: well done by Anand. Really wish it was Topa vs Anand for the 1 mill.
May-12-06  Confuse: topalov must have relaxed knowing he'd getting his world championship match in fall. oh well! more anand for us =P
May-12-06  Caloy: <notyetagam>..And I thought that 28. Ne5 was good for white, with pressure on the f7 pawn..NH3 was a surprise, and the position just collapsed after that :)
May-12-06  samikd: After this world championship politics thing (Topa-Kramnik) gets over and its time for some real chess, we demand a Topalov-Anand match !
May-12-06  Hitchhiker: <mang00neg> I bet Topa doesn't ;)
May-12-06  MTal: This is indeed a watershed victory. This is the first win/loss between the two of them since ... a year ago in Mtel. Except then Topalov was the winner, and went on to win the championship. They we equal in Corus, but now it seems Vishy is gaining momentum. Topalov is fortunate to have the Kramnik match where he can reassert himself as a champion, even if by that time he is second in rating.

How smart for Vishy to skip Linares and cook up some serious preparation for Mtel!!!

May-12-06  VishyFan: <notyetagm: I meant "calm down" tournament-wise, quoting what happended to Svidler and Leko at Linares. Two rounds down, eight to go.> I never talked about a tournament win......, don't assume things........

May-12-06  Hitchhiker: Whats Anands Elo-rating now?
May-12-06  VishyFan: <notyetagm: Yes, Topalov missed 27 ... g5! and his position collapsed.> Agreed that Ng5 was a gud move, but there was no respite for Topa, even if has spotted that one.., <all> prove it, if u think I'm wrong...
May-12-06  you vs yourself: <CapablancaFan: <WannaBe: This will be a draw, 60 moves> Topa's white? Lol. It will be Anand praying to come away from this thing HOPEFULLY with a draw!>

A 2800 player should get a little more respect than that:)

May-12-06  notyetagm: <Caloy: <notyetagam>..And I thought that 28. Ne5 was good for white, with pressure on the f7 pawn..NH3 was a surprise, and the position just collapsed after that :)>

Yes, the whole winning tactical sequence that Anand plays is really tremendous. 27 ... ♘g5! with the follow-up 28 ... ♘xh3+!, what more can you say about how great it is?

That's how you defeat a 2700+.

May-12-06  Canuck16: Can someone explain the following to me:

1) Why not 28.Rxd8

2) Where is the finish after 36. ...Bg3 ?

I know I'm missing some clear mating lines, and I'd appreciate if someone could explain...

May-12-06  VishyFan: <Hitchhiker: Whats Anands Elo-rating now?> 2803
May-12-06  Ulhumbrus: Anand had some initiative but not too secure looking a position, as can occur with the Black side of a Ruy Lopez sometimes, even when Black is able to play ...d5. Anand however sacrificed a piece thereafter to gain a winning king side attack.
May-12-06  you vs yourself: <Canuck16> 28.Rxd8 Nxf3+ 29.gxf3 Rxe1+ 30.Kg2 Rxd8 and black is clearly better.

After 36...Bg3, black is threatening Qxf2# and Qxh3+ and white was already down a pawn.

May-12-06  Hitchhiker: <VishyFan: <Hitchhiker: Whats Anands Elo-rating now?> 2803>

Yes, but its a lot higher after this game, isn't it?

May-12-06  MTal: Topalov best bet was 25.Nxd4 Nxd4 and only then 26.Nb3

This leads to a pretty equal game.
