EVGENY SVESHNIKOV
(born Feb-11-1950, died Aug-18-2021, 71 years old) Russia

[what is this?]

Grandmaster (1977) and FIDE Senior Trainer (2013) Evgeny Ellinovich Sveshnikov was born in Cheliabinsk, Russia. He won the 2017 World Senior Championship in Italy(1). He was the father of IM Vladimir Sveshnikov.

Sveshnikov was best known for his advocacy, together with Gennadij Timoscenko, of 1.e4 c5 2.Nf3 Nc6 3.d4 cxd4 4.Nxd4 Nf6 5.Nc3 e5, which became known as the Sveshnikov Variation of the Sicilian (formerly known as the Lasker-Pelikan Variation). Previously regarded as a dubious sideline, it became one of the most respected defenses to 1.e4. Former world champion Magnus Carlsen has become a great exponent of it.

Sveshnikov held the unusual opinion that players should have the right to keep the scoresheets of their games rather than handing them over to organizers. He believed that players should have the right to decide themselves what to do with them (e.g. write a book with exclusive game scores), and not give future opponents unnecessary advantages.

Sveshnikov won Le Havre (1977), Capablanca Memorial (1979), URS-ch sf Volgodonsk (1983), Moscow Championship (1983) (tied with Sergey Makarichev), Chigorin Memorial (1983) (tied with Anatoly Vaisser), and Hastings 1984/85.

HeMateMe: When I saw this name in the Olympiad, I thought maybe its a common name in Russia, or, perhaps he is a cousin of the man who's name is on an opening...but it is the same Sveshnikov of old.

Who is he playing for here?

Apr-02-11  Everett: This GM has one of the most straightforward opening repetoires in the history of the game.

Opens e4 and plays the following against the 5 major responses:

Alapin Sicilian
French Advance
Panov-Botvinnik Caro-Kann
Petrov Modern Attack
Scotch

The first two fit together very well.

Nov-03-11  rapidcitychess: He's playing in the European team championship, apparently.

Penguincw: Happy 64th birthday to GM Evgeni Sveshnikov.

<He maintains a unusual opinion, in that he is against the handing over the gamescores believing that the chessplayers should have the right to decide themselves what to do with them (e.g. write a book with exclusive gamescores) and not give future opponents unnecessary advantages.>

So does he mean the fans can't view the gamescores (only the results)?

offramp: I'd like to know what happens to chess gamescores. I never see them for sale on places like eBay. But people obtain and collect them. Where from?
Dec-15-14  Conrad93: I have been playing 2. c3 for the past few months. Very few people are aware of the Na3-Nb5 idea, so I get lot of easy wins.

Great player and a great writer! Definitely worth the 30 bucks I spend.

redlance: Sveshnikov, is writing a book on openings for blitz. These games maybe a test of lines.

Feb-11-16  thegoodanarchist: A very strange bird is the Pelikan
Its beak can hold more than its belly can.

Happy Birthday to GM Sveshnikov.

eternaloptimist: Happy birthday to GM Sveshnikov! It's great to see that he's still playing in tournaments & still playing at a very high level! He played Karpov last July in a rapid match & did pretty well considering he played Karpov. Of course Sveshnikov lost the match but he did get 1 win.: Karpov-Sveshnikov Rapid Match (2015)
Feb-03-17  rickcarnes: Since Chess is considered a sporting event in some parts of the world and certainly a news event in others it would be difficult for Chess players to claim the exclusive right to the broadcast of their games. But reprinting them in books and magazines or use videos where there is commercial exploitation of their ideas should net them a royalty I do believe. At the very least the attribution of their games should be required. However, a copyright can only be assigned to a unique expression of an idea so the game copyrighted would have to be the first one using the specific moves outlined and any succeeding games that were exactly the same could not be copyrighted. Perhaps if Grandmasters had royalty streams of income there might be more and better players interested in the game. After all, that is the idea of copyright, to incentivize the creation of art.
Feb-05-17  sonia91: He just won the Moscow Open veteran's event with 7.5/9 on tiebreak from an IM : http://www.chess-results.com/tnr260...
Jul-27-17  Eagle41257: He's been playing for Latvia more than 20 years, but lives in Russia now again.

eternaloptimist: Happy birthday to 1 of the most important theoreticians of 1 of the best variations of the Sicilian...GM Sveshnikov!! Mieses was the 1st to play it but Sveshnikov deserves a lot of credit for turning it into the great variation that it is today. He has 1/2 a century of chess tournaments behind him!!
Aug-20-20  Judah: <<HeMateMe>: Everytime I see that name, I'm reminded of the Kalishnikov rifle, the sturdy AK-47, the weapon of choice of third world soldiers.>

Surely, that rifle is the namesake of the Kalashnikov variation (along with the allusion to the Sveshnikov variation, of course).
