HERBERT SEIDMAN
(born Oct-17-1920, died Aug-30-1995, 74 years old) United States of America

[what is this?]

Herbert Seidman was a Senior Master who was born in New York City. At his peak, he was ranked among the top ten players in the country. Seidman played in eight U.S. Championships, from 1940 to 1968 inclusive.

Seidman participated in the historic USA vs USSR radio chess match in early September 1945, in which the ten leading masters of the United States played the ten leading masters of the Soviet Union. Playing on eighth board, Seidman lost both games to Viacheslav Ragozin.

Seidman won the New York State Championship in 1961 (jointly with Benko) and in 1971.

Aug-21-13  belgradegambit: Herb lived in Brookyln near our family and his wife Phoebe was a close friend of my mom. He had impressive billowing curly grey hair. He worked for the American Cancer Society as a statistician. He very much disliked Fischer bacause of Fischer's anti-semitic rants. Unfortunately I never got a chance to play him.
Oct-17-13  Kikoman: <Player of the Day>

Rest In Peace Sir Herbert Seidman.

Oct-17-13  Abdel Irada: I note with approval that Seidman was a fellow appreciator of both the Grunfeld and the Alekhine. :-)
