HUMPHREY BOGART
(born Dec-25-1899, died Jan-14-1957, 57 years old) United States of America

[what is this?]

Humphrey Deforest Bogart was born near New York, USA. An actor and chess enthusiast he was also a fairly strong amateur player, as evidenced by his draw with Samuel Reshevsky in a simultaneous exhibition. He included a chess position from one of his correspondence games in his most famous movie, Casablanca, although the position was disturbed during shooting. He was a USCF tournament director and active in the California State Chess Association, and a frequent visitor to the Hollywood chess club. In 1945, he and his wife, Lauren Bacall, appeared on the cover of Chess Review.

kingfu: If Bogart is in the credits, see it. Bogart would hustle chess for 25 cents a game in New York during the depression. For all scifi geeks (which seems to correlate with chess) , you should see The Return of Doctor X which stars Humphrey. Who is the Bogart of today? Answer: Nobody. Who could be named Humphrey in 2009 and NOT get beat up?

HeMateMe: Did Bogie really hustle chess? Just wondering, what's your source for that? I don't put anyone above a little gambling, just didn't know if he was that strong a player.

An article I read about him said that "on a good day he played at master level..." but he may have been closer to expert level, in the long run. I remember reading stories about how actors like Henry Fonda, real stars of the day, were busking in times square, doing soft shoe routines, etc, and passing the hat.

kingfu: bogieonline.com was one place talking about it. I read it someplace else, although, it was not imdb. It was said that he got eating money by winning games on Times Square. Maybe he had his own table and pieces. I know there are tables with painted chess boards on them on the square in Washington Park in Greenwich Village ,as seen in Independence Day with Goldblum playing his father, played by Judd Hirsch. Bogie got a draw with Reshevsky, lost to Koltanowsky and maybe played Capablanca! I got a draw with Rossolimo, lost to Christiansen (badly) and never got to play Karpov!

kingfu: This is bizarre but true. After lunch today, my sister was cleaning out our hummingbird feeder. Bees go in there and get stuck or get too high on the sugar and do not make it out. While she was working , she got stung by a DEAD BEE!

"To Have and Have Not"

Eddie (Walter Brennan to Lauren Bacall) : "Was you ever stung by a dead bee?"

I always thought that was a funny line spoken by a drunk in the movie. My sister's finger looks like a squash!

Dec-25-09  Kris Kringle: Happy Birthday and Merry Christmas wherever you are.

Feb-06-10  drnooo: Just out of the blue: does anyone here have the romote notion where the picture is taken from, which movie. It is on a set, not too obviously, but it is. No guessing allowed. Even though I am sure somebody is going to go ahead and guess away. More clues to follow if nobody comes up with the right answer.

HeMateMe: Rabat, Morocco, WWII. Ric owns a seedy night club, frequented by Germans, smugglers, drunks, gamblers and people on the run. Sort of like the Jim and Tammy PTL.

Feb-09-10  BishopofBlunder: Just watched <Casablanca> a few nights ago. Can't say it was the best movie ever made, because I have seen them all. But it's quite possibly the best movie I have ever seen.

Brilliant acting, dialogue, lighting, cinematography, you name it.

kingfu: drnooo, I say it would be one of two movies. Why? It looks like Bogart is wearing a prison uniform. Therefore, it could be "We're No Angels", my favorite Christmas movie or "Passage to Marseille." Hey , wait! He was also dressed like that in "African Queen."

BishopBerkeley: Amusing Chess quote: "Life is a game of Chess. I don't know how to play Chess." From the trailer to the film, "Exit through the Gift Shop" a film about the street artist Banksy (among others). The person quotes is the filmmaker Thierry Guetta.

Jul-16-10  wrap99: I see "stung by a dead bee" but I think it was "bit".

Also, Kramer us mentioned as a chess playing director. I am certain the strongest chess playing director by far is Marcel Sisniega.

Check It Out: Where's the game he played with Reshevsky?
Aug-16-10  drnooo: Kibrick wuold be my guess as the best chessplaying director, though perhaps I am mistaken. As for the movie, that has to be We're no Angels. There are pictures of Bogart playing chess with Lorre and Walter Slezak, and as for Passage he looks too old here for that and who on the set of Queen played chess? Not Hepburn or Huston or Morley likely. Betcha four to one its Angels.

  kingfu: Thank you drnooo.

I listened to Malcolm McDowell talk about Kubrick and chess. Sir Malcolm said he and Stanley played a lot while filming "A Clockwork Orange." But did not play after the movie was done. McDowell lamented not being able to play Kubrick after that.

John Huston, the director of African Queen, might have played chess. He did everything else!

We're No Angels makes sense. Internet Movie Database has gone sideways. Many previously included details are now left out.

Ingmar Bergman had a Chess Game between the "protagonist" and Satan in one of his films.

Chess is even mentioned in "Chisum" , a John Wayne film!

Maybe we should research and collaborate on a book about Chess in film!

wwall: The game should be added to the database as real. It first appeared in Chess Life, March 5, 1956, page 6 in John Collins' column of games by USCF mwembers.

James Demery: Bogie played Paul Henreid on the set of Capablanca. Henreid said Bogart was a fine player , but that Henreid was slightly better. Bogart didn`t win a single game.
