KENNETH T SOLOMON
(born Oct-08-1979, 45 years old) South Africa

[what is this?]

International Master (2004); Grandmaster (2014)

Currently based in Venice in Italy.

Kenny Solomon won the South African U16 championship in 1994 and the South African U18 championship in 1995. Kenny - as he is popularly known - shared the 2003 South African Chess Championship title with IM Watu Kobese. He has represented South Africa at six Olympiads since 1998. He played in the 2007 Gibtelecom Masters, scoring 5/9 and made the same score (out of 10) in 2009. He earned his first GM norm in the Padova International Open held in Italy in December 2011, scoring 6.5/9. In 2012, he played in the 28th Cappelle-la-Grande (2012), scoring 5/9. He played top board for South Africa at the Chess Olympiad (2012), scoring 5.5/10 and his 2nd GM norm, a double norm, that fulfilled his GM norm requirements. Normally he would have been required to first reach a rating of 2500 to achieve his GM title, but instead went on to win the African Championship of 2014 in December of that year (with a score of 7/9 and a TPR of (2550)), thereby winning the title directly. (1), (2) 4th at the South African Open (2015).

Solomon is married to Veronika Goi, and the couple have a daughter born in 2011. His elder brother is CM Maxwell Solomon.

He qualified(3) for the World Cup in 2017 and is a FIDE Trainer (2005).

.. "Chess has become a passion. It helps build logic and creativity, and I enjoy the psychological aspect of it as well." ..

off topic:

"Unfortunately, I have not been able to find any of the games. That’s one of the main problems of most African tournaments … the game scores are rarely made available. I suppose inputting the games is a very tedious process indeed!" (Daaim Shabazz)

Agree on that one! It is even a hard task just to spot the great African chess players. All these characters sharing the chess passion. So many wonderful games must have been "lost" - what a pity!

May-19-12  wordfunph: IM Timothy Taylor on IM Kenneth Solomon..

<Kenny Solomon, IM from South Africa, had a hard time getting into Hungary for the famous First Saturday tournament due to some bureaucratic visa problems- then when he finally made it to Budapest, he found out that his Euros were no good, as Hungarians prefer their own currency, the Forint!

He reminded me of myself when I played in my first First Saturday back in 2003 - lost and a long way from home! I loaned him some money for subway fare - a little nervously, as I didn't know him, but he seemed like a good guy. I shouldn't have worried. Kenny is a stand-up guy; I got my money right back; and he became a good friend to my wife and myself, and especially to our little boy, Nikolay.>

Mar-29-13  Einstein13: i should say kenny is quite impressive.... He is making history in our country and that takes alot of effort.... Chess is difficult for us south africans but our standard of chess looks like child's play for the world. Lets hope that when kenny makes his breakthrough, a new, stronger understandinng of chess will emerge in our country
