LOL

Jan-14-09  Kasparov Fan01: In Nigel Shorts forum here he states that he knows the identity of Raffael but won't say who it is, bummer.
Feb-10-09  KingG: Some comments on http://www.chessninja.com/dailydirt...:

<tjallen: That's a plan! Garry could make his chess comeback on the "Senior Tour" like in Golf. He could play in the World Senior, and also the Old Masters vs Young Bucks (didn't Nunn say the Old Masters needed to get stronger players on their team?) And the Seniors vs. the Ladies, too! Garry looks distinguished in gray hair. Maybe a Seniors Grand Prix, and also Kasparov-Karpov VI and VII!>

<Mig: Sure, and the minute I said something like that to him he wouldn't sleep until he was back at #1 on the online blitz ratings...>

<ra: Mig, that was too much of a revelation about Garry's online identity. You cannot keep a secret.>

<Macauley: Indeed. Clearly Mig will now have to resign from writing for Garry, and move to Москво to become a fellow at the prestigious Катовки Инститю&- #1090;...>

I presume Raffael was once number one on playchess. Anyway, considering that Kasparov was probably the best blitz player in the world until at least the late 90's-early 00's, you have to assume that he would be one of the best online. For example, Svidler is thought to be one of the best blitz players in the world at the moment, but when they played online back in 1998 Kasparov crushed him. Kasparov's blitz score against Anand is also very good as far as I know and Kasparov won a very strong blitz tournament during the 1999 Wijk Aan Zee supertournament 1.5 points ahead of Anand and Ivanchuk who were in second place, Game Collection: Hoogovens Blitz 1999.

I've uploaded a bunch of Kasparov blitz games from the late 90's that aren't on this database, but they aren't up yet.

You can read some of the background to the Kasparov-Svidler games here: http://www.chessclub.com/news/990

Feb-11-09  blueofnoon: LOL, I was too excited to check the previous posts in this forum before copy&pasting comments in Mig's blog (I deleted my own to avoid duplication).

Yes, KingG, it seems now what handle Garry uses on playchess.com is evident.

And I am happy to learn he still does not lose his love to our game.

Feb-15-09  Player99: There is no doubt Raffael is Garry! I was watching last round Corus 2009 Yue-Carlsen game on playchess and so was Raffael, when winning f6 was played. Chessbase article Wijk R13: "Kasparov watching the game commented: 59...g6 or 60...g6 was a draw"
Feb-21-09  Kasparov Fan01: Not sure if this means anything but in a documentary made in 2000 about Kasparov, he mentions how it was his dream that chess one days becomes as popular as tennis.

The fact that he mentioned tennis as a sport and not any other, had me thinking that the name Raffael, was reffering to Raffael Nadal.

Just a thought.

interesting.

Mar-01-09  NakoSonorense: Not really. Rafael Nadal didn't even know how to play tennis in 2000. He was only 14 years old back then.
Mar-01-09  Jim Bartle: Of course nobody knew anything about Nadal yet in 2000, so you're right. But I'm pretty sure he already knew how to play tennis very well. You should see these juniors at 14.
Mar-01-09  NakoSonorense: <Jim> Of course. He probably was a very good player at 14. I was exaggerating a little when I made that post.

But on further thought, they might have a point. In 2000, Kasparov made that comparison between tennis and chess. But the alias <Raffael> probably didn't exist back then. I'm not sure when exactly it was created, maybe when Nadal was on his way to the top?

But I doubt that Kasparov has clairvoyant powers... if he had, he would've forseen that Putin was going to beat him to a pulp in the elections.......

Mar-10-09  Kasparov Fan01: Raffael has been around for probably 2-3 years. Nadal has been at the top 1-2 ranking for at least 4 years.

The point that I was trying to make is that Garry admires tennis, hence his comparison of the sport, and the only famous Raffael I know of plays tennis.

Mar-10-09  pawn to QB4: Hadn't you come across this bloke http://www.myartprints.co.uk/a/raff...? his art was considered to have built on and surpassed that of many a great predecessor - I took it that was the reference. 'Course, he could have been watching the ninja turtles and misspelled the name.
Sep-22-09  Duerre: Raffael.. (still) simply the best!

Dec-06-11  trudodry: Raffael, you no play more on playchess ? and, you play on icc ? thanks, i like your games
Oct-19-14  fisayo123: Definitely Garry. Same openings, same playing style. His feel for the initiative and ruthless energy with the black side of the Sicilian Najdorf is unparalleled in chess history...................Besides, many reputable Russian GM's have already said it's him.

<trudodry> He played as recently as 2012 but the games were "unrated".

Dec-23-14  Hand Of King: Here is a playlist of Raffael games played on playchess.com https://www.youtube.com/playlist?li...
Apr-28-16  todicav23: Does anyone know who was Raffael? Is he/she still playing?
Apr-28-16  TheFocus: Raffael is Kasparov.
