May-13-10  wordfunph: maybe an IM with GM norms, famous scalps include Lein, Tringov, Polugaevsky, Planinc, Petrosian, Savon, Uhlmann, Janosevic, Paoli, Czerniak, and Matulovic..
May-13-13  brankat: R.I.P. IM Maric.
May-13-15  Calar: One of the wittiest chess author I've ever read. In his books and articles, he mostly wrote about popularly interesting side of chess: miniatures, great combinations, unusual positions, awesome endgames with analyses...

Even a person totally ignorant of chess could learn to love and appreciate it after reading his books.

Dec-25-15  diagonal: IM Rudolf Maric is also <Honorary Grandmaster>, apparently awarded shortly after his death in 1990.

From 1977 until 2003, FIDE awarded Honorary Grandmaster titles to 31 strong players based on their past successes and other contributions to chess. In the Pre-ELO era of the 1950s and the 1960s, the chess world counted less than hundred living grandmasters, today there are more than thousand grandmasters.

The GM title (inauguration in 1950) then was granted primarily on winning strong international tournament(s); in some cases it was debatable whether or whether not an achievement (no ELO performance metrics / norms that time) was sufficient.

That's why the Honorary Grandmaster was given retrospectively to some strictly selected strong (IM) players, all born before WWI and career peaking in the mentioned period around late 1940s to early 1970s, who had just missed the GM title but would deserve it. Of course, there are still a few "forgotten" players left out.
