RYBKA (COMPUTER)
(born 2004) Czech Republic

[what is this?]

Rybka (Czech for "little fish") is a computer chess engine designed by IM Vasik G Rajlich. It supports both single processor and SMP systems. Iweta Radziewicz Rajlich is the main tester & Hans van der Zijden is one of her operators. Jeroen Noomen & Jiri Dufek co-authored her opening book. At the WCCC (2006), Rybka, playing under the name Rajlich, tied for 2nd place with Shredder (Computer), and behind the champion, Junior (Computer). Rybka won the 15th World Computer Chess Championship in Amsterdam, 2007 and the 16th World Computer Chess Championship in Beijing, September 28th to October 5th 2008 with 8.0/9 (+7 -0 =2). During 2009-10, she also became the World Computer Speed Chess Champion.

In 2011, the International Computer Games Association (ICGA) ruled that Raljich had plagiarized two other programs, Crafty and Fruit, disqualified him for life from competing in the World Computer Chess Championship and all other ICGA events, and stripped Rybka of the championship titles it had won in 2006 through 2010.

Aug-17-08  sallom89: <missing kasparov> appreciate the answer :)
Aug-17-08  missing kasparov: By the way its my guess that Shredder 12 is about to be released . The reason I say this is that shredder was a hard program to get free without the 30 day limit. Now you can download DEEP SHREDDER 11 WITH REGISTRATION CODE MAKING IT YOURS UNTIL YOU BY A NEW COMPUTER. FOR MYSELF I LOVE THE SHREDDER INTERFACE. I HAVE RYBKA 3 IN IT.
Aug-17-08  missing kasparov: <P.S Once you get Shredder you will think FRITZ is a waste of time and MONEY There is ALWAYS trouble with FRITZ and its uci protocol on top of that it cost to much for the piece of junk>.
Aug-17-08  whatthefat: I can't say I've had any trouble with Fritz at all.
Aug-17-08  missing kasparov: But maybe< whatthefat> knows something I dont.
Aug-19-08  missing kasparov: ccrl rating 8-18-08 rybka 3 1_cpu_32 bit 3121 elo 157 games : 105 wins,12 losses, 40 draws(25.5%), score: 79.6% <to all have a nice day.>
Aug-22-08  sallom89: <missing kasparov> I ordered Deep Rybka 3 + Rybka opening book going after your advice, but what exactly is Aquarium? I don't get it.. and should get table basis to strengthen the engines end game or it doesn't need it ?

sorry, I just don't have enough knowledge about engines, thanks :-)

Aug-22-08  timhortons: <sallom> deep rybka 3 plus table base plus aquarium would cost you how much?
Aug-22-08  sallom89: <timhortons> hey! I didn't get table bases yet, only Deep Rybka 3 and the opening book and it did cost me Total: 113,04 € (with shipment), im wondering my self what aquarium is, I would be embarrassed if its the opening book lol :P
Aug-23-08  missing kasparov: <sallom> aquarium is the screen you see that has the chess pieces on it. Chess programs today come in two parts , the graphical user interface or GUI is the screen with the board and clock. And the chess engine the engine is the brains of the program. Aquarium is a GUI you have to install a chess engine in your gui. But you just bought deep rybka 3 is it a chessbase product?
Aug-23-08  sallom89: hey thanks for the answer, Deep Rybka 3 from chess base yes.
Aug-23-08  missing kasparov: <sallom> nalimov endgame tablebases is a database with endgames that has been played backwards from mate back 1 to 7 moves so the computer dosnt have to figure them out. Nalimov can also be downloaded free at chesslib the whole database is a terabite or more so getting them on disk saves hard drive space. If you got children around wait until they are sleep and copy the disks on a cd-rw so you always have a copy without scratches for smooth program running. Where are you from Im I live in Las Vegas nv. USA.
Aug-23-08  sallom89: <missing kasparov> thanks again for your help, but the whole nalimov should be saved on the computer if u need to analyze? I really don't get it :/

Vegas is nice, always hear good stuff about it :P

i'm from Kuwait and currently living in Kuwait :-)

Aug-24-08  missing kasparov: Nalimov helps your program find checkmates faster. Start the program find the help button click on it and read more about it.

This position is from a club game of mine.

Playing with the Black pieces, I examined 23 ... ♖a8-a2 and 23 ... b4xc3, completely overlooking the strength of the obvious 23 ... b4-b3, with a queenside bind.

How does <RYBKA 3> evaluate these three moves?

23 ... ♖a8-a2
23 ... b4-b3
23 ... b4xc3

?

For the record I played 23 ... b4xc3, which <FRITZ 11> also thinks is the strongest move.

Thanks

BishopBerkeley: <missing kasparov> Good luck with your computer shopping!

I forget the exact count, but I believe I have purchased 10-12 computers over the last several years from the Dell Refurbished Computers website:

http://outlet.dell.com/

In exchange for a small scratch or dent (or merely for the fact that the original was returned, often fully functional), you get a hefty discount.

The offerings change from hour to hour, so it is good to check back often. The search tool doesn't work particularly well I've found, so I just interact with the site in this way (example):

1) Go to the main site: http://outlet.dell.com/

2) Click "Outlet Desktops & All-in-One" and select "Home & Home Office"

3) Click the green "Continue" button under (say) Inspiron Desktops

4) Over on the far right, click the green "Check Availability & Prices" button

5) Now, you can TRY to use the search interface (which I've had little luck doing), OR you can SORT the list by clicking the blue column heading of any column. You might start out by clicking "Price" to sort from low price to high price. (At this time, the lowest price I see is $219 for a modestly-appointed Inspiron 530, but the prices go up significantly further down the list.)

At the bottom of the list, click a page number to move forward to another page of hits. The highest price on page 7 of this list at this time is $589.

If you go back to the beginning and search the XPS line, you'll find some more expensive and more powerful computers.

Of course, this is just one option among many, but I've been so well served by this Dell Refurb website that I doubt that I'll buy a computer from another site or outlet any time soon!

Having said that, one very knowledgeable friend is enthusiastic about

http://www.tigerdirect.com/

so you might consider checking out that website.

Best of luck with your purchase!!

  BishopBerkeley: <missing kasparov> addendum....

Just a few additional help notes, should you try the Dell Refurb site....

After step 4 above, change the "Model" item in the search interface from "Inspiron 530" to "All". Then click "Filter Results". Sort the results by "Price". (The search interface is useful if you don't load it up with too many conditions, I find.)

I found that I had to go all the way up to page 23 (!!) before I found any computers as expensive as $700. So there are many to choose from.

Also, if you find one that interests you, click the blue characters under "View Details" to learn more about that computer. (I see a few XPS 420 models for $699 with Intel Core 2 Quad-Core - 2400 (processor), 640 GB SATA Hard Drive (7200 RPM), 3GB of memory, and a good video card.)

Hope this is helpful!

P.S. I'm not affiliated with Dell Computer Corp. in any official way, except as an enthusiastic user of Dell PCs. I was a Dell shareholder some time ago, but that is no longer true.

(: ♗ Bishop Berkeley ♗ :)

Sep-24-08  parmetd: dell is the worst company in existence and the worst buy you can make. You're better off learning how to build yourself but if this isn't an option for you then searching tigerdirect.com and newegg.com for their towers usually suffices.
