RYBKA (COMPUTER)
(born 2004) Czech Republic

[what is this?]

Rybka (Czech for "little fish") is a computer chess engine designed by IM Vasik G Rajlich. It supports both single processor and SMP systems. Iweta Radziewicz Rajlich is the main tester & Hans van der Zijden is one of her operators. Jeroen Noomen & Jiri Dufek co-authored her opening book. At the WCCC (2006), Rybka, playing under the name Rajlich, tied for 2nd place with Shredder (Computer), and behind the champion, Junior (Computer). Rybka won the 15th World Computer Chess Championship in Amsterdam, 2007 and the 16th World Computer Chess Championship in Beijing, September 28th to October 5th 2008 with 8.0/9 (+7 -0 =2). During 2009-10, she also became the World Computer Speed Chess Champion.

In 2011, the International Computer Games Association (ICGA) ruled that Raljich had plagiarized two other programs, Crafty and Fruit, disqualified him for life from competing in the World Computer Chess Championship and all other ICGA events, and stripped Rybka of the championship titles it had won in 2006 through 2010.

Sep-25-08  notyetagm: <RV> Thanks.
Sep-25-08  The Rocket: when is the next computer world-championship and which engines going to compete this year? do they go by ranking when determining which engines do compete? programs like chessmaster that competed last year is not a top 10 program so I was suprised to see it in the competion.
Sep-25-08  timhortons: chessmaster is a product of ubisoft canada, i think they had a good marketing strategy thats why they had good sales
Sep-25-08  AsosLight: For people who want to save their money. Dot't buy Rybka 3 book it doesn't deserve it's money. There are much better books completely free! And of course don't buy TableBases they are completely free online or you can genarate them with your own generator but you need a lot of patience in both cases. I think you can find generators to all Fritz engine programs. Of course you can also don't buy Rybka since the free one is very very strong. For those who want to learn what are TBs, that's an interesting article: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Tableb...
Sep-25-08  actinia: <JointheArmy>

Rybka was handicapped for the match with Milov; its opening book and endgame tables were partially disabled.

Sep-25-08  timhortons: <asoslight> whats the difference in elo strentgh in the latest rybka that there selling and the one that you can download free online?

is there a big difference in computing prowess of the two when you use it in correspondence chess, most online correspondence chess player cheat using chess software but everybody is denying of doing so.

im not really into analyzing position, i play bullet chess for fun using the most off beat opening.

but i know the most stupid of a patzer can argue with a grandmaster at icc as long as his latest rybka is running on quadcore computer analyzing the position.

Sep-25-08  AsosLight: Yes the differences between the two are noticeable, if someone is interest in engine play. Still free Rybka is #2 engine in the world.

Against humans and for analysis is almost the same though. Any time the free Rybka has a problem eg. Openings, closed possitions, endgame, fortress issues, the new Rybka has exactly the same problems.

I would not say that Rybka 3 is more "clever" than her predecessors. She does not understand the same things like all engines.

Yes... about correspondence...
To know how to analyse with engines is an art though, and not many people know how to do it. Why you think so many players have ICCF 2500elo using engines and only a few others have 2700? You need to understand what you are doing.

Sep-25-08  SatelliteDan: At this point in time who wins? Rybka vs Hydra?
Sep-25-08  AsosLight: First of all Hydra is not an active project any more. It had stopped in 2005 or 2006.

You can safely say that Rybka is 150-200 points stronger in a match between them. I don't know which is the difference in human matches. Maybe 50-100 points for Rybka.

Sep-26-08  The Rocket: I just had a dead drawn position against the free rybka 2.2 playing black ruy lopez 5 min games but when I walked into mate! walking to far up the board so rybka mated me with its knight and bishop! had I just walked around back and forward it would have been drawn because the pawns were locked! does this mean I have "Drawn" a 3000 elo engine? is it really that high?
Sep-26-08  missing kasparov: To those who have gave me some help advice with my computer purchase 10-1-08 thank you. I'm sorry that it has taken some time for me to respond ,but I can't stay away from CNN it be calling me man calling me. GOOOO Obama. BY BY washington mutual.
Sep-27-08  missing kasparov: For those that don't know sunday september 28 2008 the ICGA world computer chess championship will be held in china. RYBKA 3 will win for more info go to http://www.grappa.univ-lille3.fr/ic...
Sep-27-08  itsankush: <AsosLight> Can u please tell me where can I find free opening books for Rybka 3? And which is the best one to use?
Sep-27-08  missing kasparov: to those that dont know 9-28-08 the world computer chess championship will take place you can follow it online as far as I know. also almost any program can be downloaded free of charge by typing the name and the word torrent . HOWEVER STAY AWAY FROM DOWNLOADING MOVIES AND MUSIC YOU LIKE MUSIC GO TO SLACKER RADIO YOU LIKE MOVIES YOU BETTER BY THEM. 9:14 am pacfic time
Oct-02-08  gazzawhite: Rybka tied for 2nd in the World Computer Speed Chess Championship with Hiarcs, Falcon, and Shredder, on 6/9, behind Sjeng on 6.5/9.
Oct-03-08  YouRang: Rybka now (as of round 6) in 1st place, by 1/2 game over Hiarcs...

http://www.grappa.univ-lille3.fr/ic...

-- In Round 6:
The Baron - Hiarcs 1/2
Rybka - Mobile Chess 1-0

-- In round 7:
Hiarcs - Junior 1-0
Sjeng - Rybka 0-1

Oct-03-08  missingkasparov: yourang I to have been following the match I thought that rybka would have done better by a larger margin.
Oct-03-08  YouRang: <missingkasparov: yourang I to have been following the match I thought that rybka would have done better by a larger margin.>

Well, it could only barely have done better. It's scored 6.5 out of 7 games (6 wins + 1 draw). :-)

Oct-04-08  Super Chess Man: What a fish !
Oct-04-08  Dionyseus: The 2008 World Computer Chess Championship just finished, Rybka won first place with 8/9. This is the second year in a row that Rybka is the WCC champion, the only other engine that has won the WCC championship twice as far as I know is Cray Blitz (1983 and 1986).

Final Standing:
1. Rybka 8.0
2. Hiarcs 7.0
3. Junior 6.0
4. Cluster Toga 5.5
5. Shredder 4.5
6. Falcon, Jonny 4.0
8. Sjeng 3.5
9. The Baron 2.5
10. Mobile Chess 0.0

And an account of the tournament by Jeroen Noomen: http://rybkaforum.net/cgi-bin/rybka...

Oct-04-08  vesivialvy93: This is fantastic for computer chess devellopments this battle every year to catch up Rybka , i don't know if i am right but since Rybka shocked comp chess world years ago , i have the feeling that all others like Shredder and Hiarcs or even Fritz , they are working much harder than before only to stay in the battle , i am not sure we would have seen this kind of strength progression from others(last 4 years) if Rybka wasn't so strong.
Oct-04-08  Monoceros: What a joke this was. It wasn't Rybka that won, it was the forty cores. It's the nerd's version of the America's Cup--whoever throws the most cash at their boat wins, except it's a computer cluster and not a boat.

Christ, I shake my head still that a frickin' <computer program> has fanboys who drool publicly over "her" every accomplishment. Now that Fischer's dead, I guess.

Oct-04-08  Red October: well actually I was very impressed with HIARCS, unfortunate that we got a worse position out of the opening against Rybka...

A tournament with 9 rounds wouldn't have enough games to conclude which engine is strongest anyways.

On equal hardware it is already known beyond any reasonable doubt that Rybka is clearly the strongest.
