Aug-19-18  thegoodanarchist: <BP> I read the series over the course of a few nights in late 2016/early 2017. It's time-consuming.

If even half of it is true, there was some seriously strange stuff going on back then.

Aug-19-18  diceman: <thegoodanarchist:

Why are <The Doors> overrated? How does a band that isn't all that good, become a super group?>

Most people don't have much musical knowledge.
(Actual music, not "bands")

Trends, fads, peer pressure, takes over.
(As well as the fact that most of what
you were allowed to hear was determined
by radio/album people trying to sell you the next Beatles/Stones.)

The beauty of music is you get to like
what you like. That meaning something, is a whole different story.

Imagine(hey there's a song!) you're back at a 1970's party, talking to teenagers about the Stones/Beatles/Doors. Now ask them about Schubert, Bach, Mozart?

Should we believe the composers of symphonies didn't know what they were doing because kids weren't into them?

This is just as much about a music industry trying to sell you a formula/recipe vs any actual/real talent.

Aug-19-18  thegoodanarchist: <diceman> I think there's more to it than that. There's the spirit of rock and roll.

Rush already talked about the subject fairly cogently:

https://www.google.com/search?ei=at...

<Invisible airwaves
Crackle with life
Bright antennae bristle
With the energy
Emotional feedback
On a timeless wavelength
Bearing a gift beyond price
Almost free
All this machinery
Making modern music
Can still be open-hearted
Not so coldly charted
It's really just a question
Of your honesty, yeah your honesty
One likes to believe
In the freedom of music
But glittering prizes
And endless compromises
Shatter the illusion
Of integrity,… >

Anyway, classical music is great music, but it doesn't fit in with what youth like to do - hang out and talk, bitch about parents, feel like they know everything, etc.

Rock has a rebellious spirit and a fast-paced energy, for a time in your life when you have to rebel, to break away from the parents and embark on a life of your own. And for a time when you have the energy - to pull all nighters for study, or partying or whatever.

Mozart doesn't fit!

The Golden Gate Bridge is a beautiful structure and an engineering masterpiece. But you wouldn't build one to cross a creek. All things for their purpose!

Aug-20-18  diceman: It's interesting you chose RUSH.

They are everything the DOORS aren't.

The way I look at it, their music also
has drive, energy, angst, rebellion,
attitude, but they are also excellent musicians.

For decades most didn't even know who RUSH were. Their songs were complex, long, and sometimes instrumentals, and didn't fit the "pop" hit format.

Even folks who know RUSH probably only know two or three songs that were radio hits. It's all about the music industry trying to sell you that same recipe.

<The Golden Gate Bridge is a beautiful structure and an engineering masterpiece. But you wouldn't build one to cross a creek. All things for their purpose!>

The problem is when the music industry only wants to sell you the Outerbridge Crossing, you don't know the Golden Gate exists.

<Rush> Is a Canadian institution.

So is <Bubbles>, Canada's biggest Rush fan.

Aug-20-18  Keyser Soze: I don't think Doors are that overrated. I mea, nobody said they were that great anyway. They were very good in that context (kinda unique sound with a crazy frontman and lyrics and the hippie age hype).

As for Rush I still listen to them regularly. Especially that period btw "Exit Stage Left" and " A Show of hands".

Aug-20-18  N0B0DY: <I mean, <N0B0DY> said they were that great anyway.> Absolutely right!
Aug-20-18  thegoodanarchist: < diceman: It's interesting you chose RUSH. >

On purpose, even.

I thought the lyrics

<But glittering prizes
And endless compromises
Shatter the illusion
Of integrity,… >

really spoke to your point about the music industry:

<This is just as much about a music industry trying to sell you a formula/recipe vs any actual/real talent.>

While at the same time, the remainder of them spoke to my point.

Aug-20-18  diceman: <Nisjesram: Old <diceman>>

Hey lookie what the hate dragged in.

Poor old busted Nizzle.

While he lies like saffuna, he cant control his emotions like saffuna.

Nizzle doesn't even do bad well!

Aug-20-18  diceman: <Keyser Soze: I don't think Doors are that overrated. I mea, nobody said they were that great anyway. They were very good in that context>

Don't think we necessarily have a dislike for these people.

It's like Magnus running into an
1800 level chess player. He doesn't hate the guy, he just knows there's better.

(Of course, the difference would be
a media that only wants you to see
1800 level players, because 1800 level players have "sold" before)

Aug-20-18  diceman: <jessicafischerqueen:

<Rush> Is a Canadian institution.>

Don't worry,
we give you full rock credit for Rush, Triumph, and Frank Marino.

Aug-20-18  thegoodanarchist: <diceman: <jessicafischerqueen:

Don't forget Bryan Adams!

Although, honestly, even his home country should only get partial credit. He ain't that good.

Aug-20-18  diceman: <thegoodanarchist:

Don't forget Bryan Adams!>

He's a bit too "pop" for that crowd.
That said, his guitar player was decent.

Aug-20-18  Big Pawn: <tga: I thought the lyrics

That it did. Quite fitting and a good choice.

Good call on Triumph. They played some tunes. Good guitar work.

Aug-20-18  Big Pawn: I deleted <Black Nizzle's> post because it was pure spam. He's not an Elite Poster.
Aug-21-18  thegoodanarchist: <BP>, that's too bad. I think <Nisj> has some potential.

He's not a hopeless case, unlike some of those clowns on Rogoff.

Aug-21-18  Big Pawn: We disagree <tga>, he’s hopeless, he hates God, he mocks God and he’s going to burn in Hell sure enough. He personifies the definitions of a fool as given in Proverbs.

But that’s not why I deleted his comment. I deleted it because it was childish and lacked substance. He’s not an elite poster.

Not sure if my meaning was clear. I wasn't talking about the afterlife.

Just saying he isn't hopeless in terms of post quality.

I think he has the potential to post on the upper levels of the pyramid.

Aug-21-18  thegoodanarchist: Now, having looked at the thread from 5 years ago, to which Anthony linked, I see that post quality has actually gone down.

I may have been wrong....

Aug-21-18  diceman: <thegoodanarchist: Now, having looked at the thread from 5 years ago, to which Anthony linked, I see that post quality has actually gone down.>

Translation: Its gotten more liberal.

After you see the lil jif's, DrWOB's, Nizzle,
you actually miss Abdel.

Aug-21-18  Big Pawn: <dice: After you see the lil jif's, DrWOB's, Nizzle, you actually miss Abdel.>

The level of discourse on the rogoff page has plummeted. Even though <bobster> is a positive addition, the negative additions outweigh him and therefore the whole page went downhill. With the <crayons up the nose club> of jiffy, dwob, nizzle and perf, it’s like adding four zeros to your test scores in school and then finding the horrible average.

I remember the teacher telling us that it was better to hand in a crappy homework assignment than to hand in nothing at all, and then he showed us how you add up the scores and divide to find the average. I remember the example: if you get three 100% but get a zero on the fourth, your average is only 75. Made an impression on me in the 4th grade.

On the rogoff page they’ve added four zeros, and there were no 100s in the first place. Every one of those posters are too stupid to have a philosophical debate with. Crayons up the nose.

Sad.

Aug-22-18  Caissanist: Why do you guys even bother discussing politics here? That's not what the site is designed for at all. Other sites have much better features for that.
