Open Defence: my preparation in the French ran into some rough weather in one of my ICCF games but I might be able to steer the game into an end game of opposite coloured Bishops (where I have the bad light squared bishop)

it is a bit sad when a flaw unravels in prepared lines

Oct-05-10  TheFocus: Here is an important new book that has been published that is a must have for serious historians. Available for $49.95; an absolute bargain for the important material it contains. It is about time someone did this.

<Chess Periodicals: An Annotated International Bibliography, 1836-2008> - Gino Di Felice

This comprehensive reference work presents detailed bibliographical information about worldwide chess periodicals past to present. It contains 3,163 entries and many cross-references. Information for each entry includes year and country of publication, frequency, sponsors, publisher, editors, subject, language, alternate titles, mergers, continuations, and holdings in chess libraries. Includes an index of periodicals by country and a general index of periodical titles.

wwall: I have Gino di Felice's Chess Results, 1747-1900 and 1901-1920. Eventually I will try to get the whole series of his chess Results and his Chess Periodicals. His periodicals book is pretty comprensive. It even lists me as editor of the Dayton Chess Club Review in the early 1980s. di Felico said he used the periodicals to do all the crosstables of his Chess Results books.

Chess Results 1951-1955
Chess Results 1956-1960

Chess Child - The Story of Ray Robson, America's Youngest Grandmaster by Gary Robson

http://www.ukgamesshop.com/Merchant...

Oct-09-10  Russian Grandmasters: <Wordfunph> have you read it yet? Are you going to get it?

I think I will buy it.

Oct-09-10  wordfunph: <Russian Grandmasters>

got no copy yet but i think it's an excellent book which i wish to have..

i have a book "Michael Adams - Development of a Grandmaster" written by his father Bill and Michael himself, as the title implies --- it's all about the struggle and glory making it as a Grandmaster and slugging it out with the world's elite. i rate the book 9/10!

Oct-09-10  Russian Grandmasters: Thanks for the recommendation- I will consider buying that one as well.

Does the Mickey Adams book have lots of information about his life in it?

Oct-09-10  wordfunph: <Russian Grandmasters> yes..

excerpts from the book "Michael Adams - Development of a Grandmaster"..

+ 11 year old Michael Adams with a habit of gazing around the room when he was due to move. His father Bill once tempted to turn his head back towards the board which is against the rules in any tournament.

+ "You are too young to play chess. Chess is a game for grown-ups. Perhaps when you are 18, you might learn to play chess." Bill Adams (father of GM Michael Adams)

Oct-09-10  Russian Grandmasters: That sounds fantastic- finally some historical detail from the real life of a chessplayer that isn't just made up by someone else.

Thanks <wordfunph> I'm going to buy it for sure.

If you like that kind of historical detail of a chess career you might like <Nezhmetdinov's Best Games of Chess>. I was reading it just today.

http://www.jeremysilman.com/book_re...

What an interesting life he had.

Plus he was a chess killer.

From <Jeremy Sillman's> review:

"Nezhmetdinov's Best Games of Chess has the great man's own personal account of his career which is quite fascinating and makes for compelling reading."

Oct-09-10  wordfunph: <Russian Grandmasters>

thanks for sharing Nezhmetdinov..

we have the same interest on chess books --- famous players' life and games, and other fascinating anecdotes..

Oct-09-10  Russian Grandmasters: <wordfumph>

Yes we do- and you know what's missing is "pure biographies."

We already have, in most cases, traditional chess biographies for the Masters- which are mainly games collections with annotation.

But I predict that in the very near future this will be almost obsolete, because all moved to internet databases.

It's so much easier to replay games on a viewer, with annotations added, than to do it manually over the board, looking from book to board and back. It gets even harder when you use a second board to keep track of variations.

But on the internet it's very easy to use a split screen with two chess clients up- one for the main game, one to use for the variations.

So I'm hoping for more "pure biographies" such as Lawson's <Pride and Sorrow> and Landsberg's <Bohemian Caesar>.

I read both of those many times- about Morphy and Steinitz.

They have no chess diagrams- just the life stories.

Unfortunately the demand for such chess books is close to zero.

Instead, we get this situation:

Often excellent and accurate <games history collections>- tons of them- with virtually no information or insight into the players' life or personality.

The only hints we usually get of the personality are <untrue> "anecdotes" that are passed down from generation to generation, anecdotes that are unsourced and totally unreliable.

wwall: Other biography chess books I like and recommend in Diary of a Chess Queen by Alexandria Kosteniuk, Pal Benko: My life, Games, and Compositions by Benko and Silman, The Bobby Fischer I Knew and Other Stories by Denker (he autographed my copy), Karpov: Chess is My Life by Karpov (Karpov autographed my copy), and Hooked on Chess by Bill Hook.

Thanks for those recommendations- I've just bought the <Arnold Denker> book from Amazon based on them.
