Nov-07-15 | | whiteshark: <Mr. V> Game Collection: xx_25 Annotated Games (by Robert Huebner) <Do you think it would be helpful to a lower-level player?> No! |
Nov-08-15 | | parisattack: I concur with <whiteshark>. It is a lovely tome but definitely not a lower-level book. Were I starting over I would do nothing but study endings for a few months. Silman's Endgame Course is really good but there are several others. |
Nov-09-15 | | TheFocus: Yes, as I begin preparing to return to tournament play, Silman's endgame book is a great place to start. |
Nov-09-15 | | parisattack: <TheFocus> is being too modest! Everyone knows he was Silman's ghostwriter for the Masters section of the book. ;) |
Nov-09-15 | | TheFocus: ,parisattack> Ah! Then the work will be mostly review! |
Nov-09-15 | | parisattack: I am playing some email games so I can offer at least token resistance at the Shorebird Beach Chess Championship. |

Is anyone familiar with these two series from <Everyman Chess>- "Move by Move"
"Starting Out"
Do you recommend either/both? What level of player would you say might benefit most from these series? |
Nov-22-15 | | Pulo y Gata: I have read several Starting Outs from years back, didn't enjoy them much except one by Andrew Greet; level is about 1600-1800 (Greet's more advanced and competent compared with the rest). I think I've read a couple of Move by Moves, they're good and beginners and advanced players can benefit from them. |
Nov-22-15 | | Pulo y Gata: If I remember correctly I've read The Slav: Move by Move and Kramnik: Move by Move. Even masters can benefit from these books IMO. You can't find too many good books that straddles both low and high levels. |

Thanks <Pulo y Gata>. I will get a couple of "Move by Move" books on your recommendation. |

 | | jessicafischerqueen:
I just ordered "Nimzowitsch Move by Move" and "Bronstein Move by Move," both by Steve Giddins. I think Steve Giddins is a fabulous translator- his work on Yuri Averbakh's memoir was stellar. I look forward now to experiencing him as a chess teacher. |
Nov-22-15 | | Pulo y Gata: <jessicafischerqueen> Hope you enjoy them as I did. Much welcome! |
Nov-22-15 | | parisattack: I have most of the Move-by-Move volumes. On balance I think the opening are better than the players. Some are excellent reads/studies; a few are not-so-good. IMHO the 'move-by-move' is more gimmick than anything else, to tie the books into a series. Several authors and publishers have tried to leverage the popularity of Chernev's Logical Chess. For my money the best 'series' tomes of the current century are the Secrets - Giants of Innovation, Heroes of Classical Chess, Giants of Power Play, Giants of Strategy, Great Attackers, Great Chess Romantics. |
Nov-22-15 | | Pulo y Gata: I've read Giants of Power Play and I agree that it's very good. As for the Move by Move, I "read" them literally, w/o a board. I think it's helpful for some players that each move is explained by a strong player and with effort on balancing the depth and the clairty of teaching (Lakdawala did a good job, IMO). To each his own though. |
Nov-22-15 | | Pulo y Gata: I meant Giants of Strategy. |

Wonderful news, my dear <parisattack>! |
Dec-05-15 | | TheFocus: I have to agree. <parisattack> is extremely knowledgable about chess books. He has a million chess books in his library, give or take a few. |
Dec-06-15 | | parisattack: There are still quite a few chess book collectors - I met a fellow here locally this past summer who bought a couple of my dups off eBay. He has a nice collection, very picky about condition. Obviously chess books still sell - Publishers pump them out at an incredible rate -for example the Move-by-Move series. I am not sure how their authors write three/four books a year, but that's another subject.Would have never known he was here, just a couple miles away. Of course we want non-collectors as well (probably primarily) - those who purchase solely/mostly for utilitarian goals and are seeking pointers to appropriate volumes and reviews. If we can make ChessBookForum a little more engaging I'm sure we can drive some new traffic to CG.com. I'll also email my personal list of collectors (not large, 25-30) to let them know we're here. I'll do what I can to help but of course I have to spend some of my 'chess time' preparing for the King of the Kamehamehas Match with <TheFocus> next year.:) |
Dec-06-15 | | TheFocus: I better get into training if I am going to represent Hawai'i in the Summit Match. But I have enlisted the help of Lani the Lotion Girl. She is busy every day stroking my... ego. |
Dec-06-15 | | parisattack: LOL! She told me you had a big...ego.
Best put some $$$ aside, also. I told everyone at CG.com they were invited and the drinks were on you. |

<Gentlemen> I deleted the post with my email addy in it because some helpful folks took the opportunity to sign me up for some nice SPAM lists. It's an ill wind, though, because it prompted me to upgrade my Yahoo security settings. Here's the relevant part saved, though I wish <Dan> would let us edit a post and let it stay in the proper order. ##################

<TheFocus: I have to agree. <parisattack> is extremely knowledgable about chess books. He has a million chess books in his library, give or take a few.> Quite right! And most of them are constructed of this newfangled "paper" I've been hearing about. That means his collection won't magically "disappear" if he ever goes offline. Although you may remember that <AJ> lost almost his whole paper chess library in Hurricane Andrew. <The Focus> and <parisattack>, remember to keep your collections away from Tsuanmis and Lava Flows. |

<<The Focus> and <parisattack>, remember to keep your collections away from Tsuanmis and Lava Flows.> Almost forgot! Since it's December 7.
Try to keep your collections away from Japanese dive bombers as well. |

Good news! <Dan> put us as the second item on the "What's New" list on the front page. I added your name to our forum, and also Boomie's, which was missing. That's because we haven't edited the dang thing since <Howard> shelled out the first shekels to open up shop. Please do feel free to update our profile, or add/subtract what you like. Also feel free not to be pestered about it by me. As you wish! |
