Thats amazing, Spring 2009 winner had 40000+ chessbucks. Tell us the trick > I know you weren't talking to me, but I would like to say the following: the same user (Switch) also achieved a slightly better score in Summer of 2008. Of course, no one can overlook his 80,924 chessbucks in the Winter 2012 Championship Leg. For more info, check out the ChessBookie Hall of Fame page. :) |
|
| Aug-12-14 | | centralfiles: <Penguin> But in the championship the winners start with 10000 and there are many more chessbucks floating around. |

 | | Chessgames Bookie: <centralfiles> As your net worth and credit rating go up, so does your maximum bet... and as you make bigger bets, you can make bigger profits in any one round. There's a limit, of course - maximum bets only go so high, and in any case if your bet is too large, the market can't swallow it completely and as a result the final odds will be bad. But there were more active players in those days, so the market had more digestive power; you could get away with making larger bets. Actually, in Spring 2009 the winner never did make a huge profit in any one round - just a steady couple thousand chessbucks per day once he got going - and the same goes for many other winners since then. (A couple thousand chessbucks per day may <sound> huge, but it isn't when the betting caps and market activity are sufficiently high.) But it's also been done the other way: with extreme profits in only a few rounds, thanks to massive bets on Pick Threes and the matching results in the individual games. There isn't just one way to do it. |

| Aug-12-14 | | MarkFinan: What's going on at the chessbookie's lately?? This forums never been as busy and I see I'm not the only one struggling with the changes. Even if I lucked out all the way to the top I'd still say I don't understand one of the wagers.. Why can't we have a normal pick 3 again? I'll bet ( 5/2) there are some people who (unlike me) don't want to make themselves look stupid by even asking you so I'll be the spokesman for us non pros... Can someone explain why the pick 3 has gotten so confusing?? ✌ <hey Cg's Bookie how can I get a loan> I hear the sperm bank need another donor! Try them, they'll fill you up :-) |
|
Aug-12-14
 | | Chessgames Bookie: <MarkFinan> Don't worry, you'll get your normal pick threes back soon enough; the next tournament after the Olympiad will be the Riga Technical University Open, and for that we'll return to regular pick threes and daily doubles. |
|
| Aug-12-14 | | MarkFinan: Okay & thank you. It's just been confusing me and I guess a few others too. ✌ |
|
Aug-14-14
 | | Penguincw: Ha ha ha! If I had bet, I would've lost 68 chessbucks, but didn't! Unfortunately, I'm going to lose 26 chessbucks on events, such as picking the winners. :| |

 | | chessgames.com: 💰 IT'S PAYDAY!!! 💰
The Chessbookie! game just had its first payday, which means that every activate participant received a free 1000 chessbucks. (Was supposed to happen last night, sorry for the tardiness.) Everything seemed to work just fine, and the leaderboard is recomputed to reflect the difference. For people with outstanding loanshark debts, note that this money is NOT automatically applied to your loan. Whether or not you want to use this windfall to make amends with the loandshark is up to you, but your juice is still running. Perhaps you can get lucky and double-it-up before paying back the fat man. You decide. |

I have to get into the top ten one season, I've had memorable quotes so I won't feel truly fulfilled at chessgames until I get into the top ten, lol 👌 |

 | | Penguincw: Note to self: From now on, I will always say aloud what I'm about to bet, as this happened: Riga rd 5: Shirov-Bailet : Bailet [info] 500 LIVE BET 7:2 4.60 2,300 Aug-20-14 (meant to bet 500 on <Shirov>) I'm probably the biggest (you know what) idiot in the world right now (sorry to swear). While on a similar topic, can there be an option to refund/exchange bets after they've been purchased (say, just 2-3 minutes after betting)? |
|
Aug-19-14
 | | WannaBe: Well, you clicked the little check box, didn't ya?? =)) |
|
Aug-19-14
 | | Penguincw: I don't think clicking the checkbox is enough, as it's too routine. |

 | | Chessgames Bookie: <Penguincw: While on a similar topic, can there be an option to refund/exchange bets after they've been purchased (say, just 2-3 minutes after betting)?> No. I'm sorry this happened to you (though likely not as sorry as the other Bailet backers, whose odds you ruined!), but as it says below the odds table... <Be sure to check your bet carefully--there are no refunds or exchanges for purchased tickets!> Once a bet has been placed, it cannot be cancelled. Every bet you make affects what other people do - not just the bets they make, but also the bets they <don't> make. And adding an extra "Are you sure?" step would almost certainly be a bad idea - it would be just as routine as the normal checkbox, and the inconvenience of the extra click would outweigh the benefits. (When it comes to that, quite often I feel that way about the existing checkbox.) I can only suggest that you really hope Bailet does win; if you have a god, now would be a good time to pray. Also, consider making additional bets on both "Shirov" and "Draw" - this is one of the very few cases in which betting on every outcome is a valid approach. |
|
| Aug-20-14 | | dakgootje: Yeah, another button would just be too much.
I've occasionally misclicked as well, only to realize it a splitsecond after placing the bet. So a very short time-window might be acceptable, say 15 seconds to delete the bet. But even so.. When you bet you have to be certain that the current pool of money stays. Even though your odds can be ruined later on. So Penguin - know that everyone messes up some time :) Which is why I tend to triple check my bets when they are [much] larger than normal ;) |
|
| Aug-20-14 | | centralfiles: I think within a minute is reaonable to assume others bets have not been affected yet. |
|
| Aug-20-14 | | dakgootje: Bluh, bad time to return to the chessbookie game.
Immediately 1k loss.
<I think within a minute is reaonable to assume others bets have not been affected yet.> Lot of time just before bets close.
If such a rule would be implemented, I'd keep it at 30s tops. Probably less, as the mistake tends to be immediately clear. |
|
Aug-20-14
 | | Penguincw: On the bright side, I only lost 173 chessbucks, which I consider <good>. < So Penguin - know that everyone messes up some time > So is it bad that I tell you that I <also> accidentally bet 20 on <Kovalenko> instead of a draw (which actually happened) this round (that I just noticed)? Anyway, since Shirov won, no harm, no foul to anyone (except for me of course), since the Shirov bettors get extra profit, the Bailet/draw backers lose anyway, and Bookie gets an extra 25 cbs or so in juice. |
|
Aug-20-14
 | | Chessgames Bookie: Unfortunately even a 15-second time limit would not only raise concerns about the cancelled bet affecting other players' bets, it would also be open to outright abuse. Imagine, for instance, someone repeatedly making an extremely large bet and then cancelling it, over and over again! (A computer-savvy player could even automate this process.) This actually happening may sound unlikely, but I've learned long ago there will always be someone who's prepared to go to any lengths to win - and it's not even as if this stratagem would be against any actual rule. Of course, this is just the extreme case, or maybe even not; the possibilities for mischief would be endless. Furthermore, the server sometimes lags heavily. It's happened many times that a player has tried to place a bet with seconds to go, only to find it didn't get there in time. That's already bad enough - I have no wish to deal with the player who places a large bet, tries to cancel it but can't due to server lag, loses and then complains it wasn't his fault and the bet should be refunded. I know the pain - been there, done that, accidentally bought the T-shirt - but allowing players to cancel bets would open too large a can of worms to happen. If you're worried about making mistakes, take that extra split-second before clicking 'Place Bet' to double-check. |

 | | WannaBe: <Sneaky> are these 2 bux wagers all yours?? =)) Riga rd 6: PICK THREE |

Aug-20-14
 | | Sneaky: No the aren't, but I'm about to make them 4! |
|
| Aug-21-14 | | dakgootje: <Unfortunately even a 15-second time limit would not only raise concerns about the cancelled bet affecting other players' bets, it would also be open to outright abuse. (...)> Yup, good points.
Best to keep it the way it is. |
