 | | Annie K.: Poor <TD>! Sheesh, the mafia just doesn't get proper respect nowadays... :\ <Will do Annie. :-) I'm guessing that the 'K' is for Kool! ;-) - Mal> Not unless somebody changed my last name while I wasn't looking. ;) BTW it also doesn't stand for Kasparov, Karpov, Kramnik, Kosteniuk, or even Kournikova. :p But if I ever decide to take up OTB chess (I'm playing only online now) and register with some federation, I'm thinking I should bargain for a few hundred extra points for my provisional rating on account of having the right last name initial! ;) |

| Nov-15-07 | | Micawbr: <technical draw> "Wow, My bad luck week. First they nab me here at chessgames then they grab me in Atlantic City. A man can't make a living these days." ~lol~
And 50% interest! You should be able to pay off the National Debt soon. You don't have it so bad tho, notice the article misspelled my handle. Seriously, the "chip washing" was interesting to me. Thanks <TD> for another far out post. |

| Nov-15-07 | | hairmajorchair: On the question of Multiple Winners
- a suggestion to chessbookie
If, for example, a favourite and two longshots were tied at the top at the end of a tournament: 1. divide the fund evenly into three lots
2. distribute the lots to the bets as usual.
This would solve a problem posed by the longshot chasers. |

 | | Chessgames Bookie: <a suggestion to chessbookie> Let's say that "two dogs tie with the chalk" (i.e. two longshots tie with the favorite) we would add all of the loser's money together, I remove my 5% juice, and then it's divided three ways. (If it's not perfectly divisible by three, I personally pocket a a chessbuck or two to solve that problem, I'm so helpful aren't I?). Then we have three piles, and each ticket gets paid off from one of those piles in proportion to what they wagered. This method was based on a suggestion from a member from the UK who claimed that he uses the local bookies a lot, and that's the British way of handling the situation of multiple winners. It rewards longshot bettors more than otherwise. Remember, longshot bettors only win once in a great while, so if they aren't paid off at steep odds they pretty much consider it a loss. Bookmaking in the United Kingdom is not illegal (it's an old and respected profession) so we figured they know something about how to do it. Somewhere in the previous kibitzing there was a deeper discussion of this matter including examples of how the math works out. |

|
| Nov-17-07 | | Touch of Knight: Aha! <technical draw> and <Ben2000> have been “cheating”. Looking at the loserboard, this seems to make me the true loser :) |
|
| Nov-17-07 | | technical draw: OK <Touch of Knight>. You are a true loser! |

Nov-17-07
 | | Sneaky: I deserve an honorable mention among the losers. From #1 last leg to under -6000 chessbucks this leg, and I never once tried to lose. It's just the nature of the game--the more you lose, the more you have to rely on longshots and miracles to get you back in the action, and the more likely it is that keep slipping down the slope. I have a theory that to be top banana in this game you have to take big risks early. If you can get lucky early in the leg, and you establish a good pile of chessbucks, then it becomes possible to start to apply logic strategy to inch your way higher. But if you try to use betting strategies from day #1 to inch your way higher, you'll fall behind people who just bet recklessly and get lucky. By the way <Chessbookie> have you considered how plugging this "basement bug" might effect the economy of the game? A lot of capital was injected into the economy due to these antics. Maybe by correcting the bug the economy will change and it will become harder to make a profit at the top. |

 | | Sneaky: Also <chessbookie> as a longshot bettor myself I totally understand what you mean when you say <longshot bettors only win once in a great while, so if they aren't paid off at steep odds they pretty much consider it a loss.> I might make 10 bets and day and hope to win just one of them, that pays for the other 9 lost bets and still show a profit. If my winning bet gets paid off at normal odds of 1:1, I end up a big loser. This seems unfair to me, because I am proposing that something unusual will happen, and when a massive underdog ties for first, that's pretty darn unusual. |

 | | Annie K.: <Bookie> Well, Kramnik is the sole winner of the Tal Memorial no matter what happens tomorrow, so could the "Tal Memorial: WINNER" bets be paid off today already, please? |
|
Nov-18-07
 | | Annie K.: Thanks! :) |
|
Nov-19-07
 | | Chessgames Bookie: Small cockup with Tal Memorial: Rd: 9: Pick Three -- the pick "white-white-white" was listed twice, at the expense of "black-draw-white". In the event that "black-draw-white" happens to win, everybody gets a full refund. Otherwise all bets stand. |
|
| Nov-19-07 | | feripe: <Bookie> There are 2 D-D-W too. And there is no D-W-W option. |
|
Nov-19-07
 | | Chessgames Bookie: Oh, you're right, thanks for that.
The irony here is that the programmers made a special function for me so I could just click on "pick three" button to set up a pick-three bet without the labor of typing in all 27 combinations. I never made a mistake before, but now that they computers provided this "error free" method, it got all screwed up. Anyhow, we'll wait to see the results. There's at least a 90% chance that this mistake will have no consequences, other than saving some punter the money they would have put on a losing option. |

 | | Sneaky: LOL, the loanshark just told me "Instead of coming to me, you oughta be going to Gamblers Anonymous." |
|
| Nov-19-07 | | zanshin: <imag> Wow! Over 12,000 ... Have you been bribing the Chess Bookie? ;-) |
|
Nov-19-07
 | | Annie K.: Maybe it would have been easier to break down the pick-three options simply as "Draw-Draw-Draw" and "Other". ;) Oh, the Loanshark has new lines? Cute! :) |

Nov-21-07
 | | Chessgames Bookie: We have opened wagering on some 1st round matches from the World Cup. |
|
| Nov-21-07 | | brankat: <Chessgames Bookie> In the World Blitz Championship P.Svidler had withdrawn and was replaced by I.Korotylev. Will the bets placed on Svidler be canceled/refunded or "assigned" to his substitute? Thank You. |
|
Nov-21-07
 | | Chessgames Bookie: <brankat: In the World Blitz Championship P.Svidler had withdrawn and was replaced by I.Korotylev.> All Svidler tickets have been refunded. If Korotylev actually wins the event then all tickets will be refunded. |
|
| Nov-21-07 | | pawnofdoom: How are Jakovenko and Alekseev in World Blitz Championship 2007: Winner? Are they even participating in the Blitz Cup? Or is that tournament a completely different tournament. But then it wouldn't make sense how Grischuk and Anand and everyone else can participate in two tournaments at once. |
|
Nov-22-07
 | | Annie K.: Hmm, it does look like Alekseev and Jakovenko are not playing in the Blitz Championship at all. Uh-oh... more refunds? :s |
|
| Nov-22-07 | | TIMER: <Chessgames Bookie> I think that the limits give too much advantage to those in the lead (as if they need more help), and if the limits are to avoid players cheating by using many accounts, which you trust once the players have played a certain amount, then maybe you should only ever increase the betting limits, no reason why players are less trustworthy once they have lost some worth than they were before. |
|
Nov-22-07
 | | Chessgames Bookie: <TIMER> That's been discussed here in the previous pages if you go back far enough. You make a good point--it's strategically logical for you to risk everything at this late stage, but the game won't allow you. Maybe in the future the system can keep track of how much action you've provided to the bookie, as well as loanshark encounters, to try to build up some sort of "credit score" that could not only control your loan limit, but your betting cap as well. People playing earnestly from the start of the leg would then be able to make desperate moves at the end of the leg, but people who sign-up new accounts would be restrained until they spend some time playing. |
|
| Nov-22-07 | | TIMER: <Chessgames Bookie> Thanks for the answer. Yes I think that is a good idea, to have a "credit score" that controls your betting cap as well as your loan limit by keeping some track of your playing. |
