   Jan-06-19 G McCarthy vs M Kennefick, 1977 (replies)

Domdaniel: Maurice Kennefick died over the new year, 2018-2019. RIP. It was many years since I spoke to him. He gave up chess, I reckon, towards the end of the 80s, though even after that he was sometimes lured out for club games. I still regard this game, even after so many years, as the ...

   Jan-06-19 Maurice Kennefick (replies)

Domdaniel: Kennefick died over the 2018-19 New Year. Formerly one of the strongest players in Ireland, he was the first winner of the Mulcahy tournament, held in honour of E.N. Mulcahy, a former Irish champion who died in a plane crash. I played Kennefick just once, and had a freakish win, ...

Domdaniel: <NBZ> -- Thanks, NBZ. Enjoy your chortle. Apropos nothing in particular, did you know that the word 'chortle' was coined by Lewis Carroll, author of 'Alice in Wonderland'? I once edited a magazine called Alice, so I can claim a connection. 'Chortle' requires the jamming ...

Domdaniel: <al wazir> - It's not easy to go back through past Holiday Present Hunts and discover useful information. Very few people have played regularly over the years -- even the players who are acknowledged as best, <SwitchingQuylthulg> and <MostlyAverageJoe> have now ...

   Jan-04-19 G Neave vs B Sadiku, 2013 (replies)

Domdaniel: Moral: if you haven't encountered it before, take it seriously. Remember Miles beating Karpov with 1...a6 at Skara. Many so-called 'irregular' openings are quite playable.

   Dec-30-18 Robert Enders vs S H Langer, 1968

Domdaniel: <HMM> - Heh, well, yes. I also remembered that Chuck Berry had a hit with 'My Ding-a-ling' in the 1970s. I'm not sure which is saddest -- that the author of Johnny B. Goode and Memphis Tennessee and Teenage Wedding - among other short masterpieces - should sink to such ...

Apr-11-07  WBP: Uh Ms <Jessicafisherqueesn.> Unlike <CC> I do not have any legal claim on "Best, Bill." And I've fallen out of touch with most of my useful contacts (read: hulking guys who belong to, shall we say, an Old World fraternity [not the freemasons] of "goodfellas") from my old bartending days in Manhattan and Staten Island. But I should think your experience with <CC> should have forever persuaded you that monkeying (or bigfooting, or sasquatching) around with other people's sign-offs is dangerous and should be left to professionals.

Best, Jess

BYW: have you seen who's now kibitzing the caged match (p. 17)? (Very intersting games there)

Apr-11-07  Knightlord: Right, stop it, it's becoming silly!

Capt. Mason
HMS Dreadfully Naughty

Apr-11-07  WBP: I'm not awake. This is all actually a dream, like that TV show in the '80s where it all turned out to be the ruminations of one character in his dreams (let's see, was that Nightline?). There is no chessgames.com, no people posting, no chess, no Kramnik.

There is, however, a life maestro AJ.

jessicafischerqueen: Hi <Knightlord>! I urge you to buy my new study on Melville!

Best, Bill

Apr-11-07  Eyal: <WannaBe: You know the secret hand-shake?> He's right, that can help you a lot.

MR. LEAVEY: Good morning, gentlemen.

CITY GENTS: Morning.

MR. LEAVEY: Uhh, this is a scale model of the block. There are twenty-eight storeys with two hundred and eighty modern apartments. There are three main lifts and two service lifts. Access would be from Dibbingley Road.

<The model falls over. Mr. Leavey quickly places it upright again.>

Uhh, the structure is built on a central pillar system, uh,...

<The model falls over again. Mr. Leavey tries to make it stand up, but it won't, so he has to hold it upright.>

...with cantilevered floors in pre-stressed steel and concrete. Uh, the dividing walls on each floor section are fixed with recessed magnolia flanged grooves.

<The bottom ten floors of the model give way and it partly collapses.>

Uh, by avoiding wood and timber derivatives and all other inflammables, uh,... <fsss> ...we have almost totally removed the risk... of--

<The model is smoking. Flames can be seen. Mr. Leavey looks at the city gents.>

Quite frankly, I think the central pillar system may need strengthening a bit.

CITY GENT #2: Isn't that going to put the cost up?

MR. LEAVEY: Uh, it might.

CITY GENT #2: Well, I don't know whether I'd worry about strengthening that much. After all, they're not meant to be luxury flats.

CITY GENT #1: No, I quite agree. I mean, providing the tenants are of light build and relatively sedentary and, uhh, given a spot of good weather, I think we're on to a winner here.

CITY GENT #2: Yes.

MR. LEAVEY: Uh, thank you.

<The model explodes.>

CITY GENT #1: I quite agree. I quite agree.

MR. LEAVEY: Thank you very much. Thank you.

<They all shake hands, giving the secret Mason's handshake.>

It opens doors, I'm telling you.

Apr-11-07  Knightlord: <jess> er, <bill> (you must quite a queen if your real name is bill and you're calling yourself jessica), you mean that Melville chap from Moby Biggus Dickus? Er, never heard of!

<Eyal>, LOL!

Apr-11-07  WBP: <Eyal> <It opens doors, I'm telling you.> Yeah, but where do we learn it? And shouldn't some of these doors be left better closed? ("Oh, Flora, I've meddled in things that man must leave alone.")

Armed and barricaded,
Best, Jess

Hope that clears things up for you.

Apr-11-07  Eyal: Don't you think this whole thing of people pretending to be someone else is getting out of control here?

Q) What is the difference between a slice of bread and a Frenchman?

A) You can make soldiers out of a slice of bread.

This is hilarious in England but doesn't go down so well in Montreal for some strange reason.

jessicafischerqueen: The craft of "bread sculpture" is unknown to the Frenchman. Since Montreal is full of Frenchmen,
