Domdaniel: Maurice Kennefick died over the new year, 2018-2019. RIP. It was many years since I spoke to him. He gave up chess, I reckon, towards the end of the 80s, though even after that he was sometimes lured out for club games. I still regard this game, even after so many years, as the ...

   Jan-06-19 Maurice Kennefick (replies)

Domdaniel: Kennefick died over the 2018-19 New Year. Formerly one of the strongest players in Ireland, he was the first winner of the Mulcahy tournament, held in honour of E.N. Mulcahy, a former Irish champion who died in a plane crash. I played Kennefick just once, and had a freakish win, ...

Domdaniel: <NBZ> -- Thanks, NBZ. Enjoy your chortle. Apropos nothing in particular, did you know that the word 'chortle' was coined by Lewis Carroll, author of 'Alice in Wonderland'? I once edited a magazine called Alice, so I can claim a connection. 'Chortle' requires the jamming ...

Domdaniel: <HMM> - Heh, well, yes. I also remembered that Chuck Berry had a hit with 'My Ding-a-ling' in the 1970s. I'm not sure which is saddest -- that the author of Johnny B. Goode and Memphis Tennessee and Teenage Wedding - among other short masterpieces - should sink to such ...

Domdaniel: Hmm, I suppose I should really come back home here with my mad number obsessions.

After all, how would I like it if somebody started spamming my forum with, uh ... football, or something.

Shock horror.

  jessicafischerqueen: I wouldn't worry about it <master domo>.

I've yet to see <Eyal> complain about a spamming subject in his forum yet, with the HILARIOUS exception of the infamous <James Bond Extended Trivia Incident>.

The Hilarious part about that (about 25 pages back in his forum?) is that <Eyal> himself actually poured plenty of gasoline on the fire with HIS OWN comprehensive knowledge of Bond, including all the actors who played <Felix Leiter> and also the details from the <Fleming> books and ALL <the films>.

And then he asked that no more Bond trivia be put in his forum!!!

It's the only time I ever saw him say anything like that.

To this day, whenever I bring up the <Bond incident>- which I do, from time to time- his answer is always a CONSPICUOUS silence.

So I wouldn't worry too much about all the maths you guys put there.

But just try some <Bond> trivia and see what happens...

Jess of the will Start with Borges and Neuromancer. I'm going in to town either this afternoon or tomorrow.

May-03-07  WBP: <Dom> <After all, how would I like it if somebody started spamming my forum with, uh ... football, or something.>

Better be careful. I'm discovering there are many on this site who would take that as an invitation to do exactly that--out of pure sadistic pleasure. (Not I, though. Now baseball...)

May-03-07  hitman84: <Domdaniel>I see that you posted about Kramnik recently, does math have something to do with this ?

jessicafischerqueen: <Dom> By football, do you mean like the <Indianapolis Colts> or <Manchester @#$%ing United>?

They are different sports, no?

I'm no expert. I watch Basketball and Cricket only.

<Eyal: <Jess of the knows no math> Help!!! My forum was invaded by an army of mad numerologists, and all because of your careless <121 3444 122132 323213333 1312231313>. I hold you responsible...>

Yikes!! Perhaps a switch to <Bond Trivia> will mollify him?

Domdaniel: Actually, I meant either kind of football. Or Rugby Union, Rugby League, Gaelic Football (aka Peile), Aussie Rules, or Transylvanian Blood Pudding Fussball.

All equally mysterious to me.

Bond, Bondage - The Paste That Passeth Understanding. And football involves passes, doesn't it?

All is connected.

  Domdaniel: <WBP> -- <the maximal state of enlightenment that is age 23.> -- <And it's all downhill after that.>

Not necessarily. I've now completed a 23 in each direction and am back at babyhood. I should learn to read soon. I'm hoping it works like a sinewave: 23 - 46 - 69 ...

How would I know what a sinewave is? I'm only two.

This also means I won't 'get' jokes about 69 and the 'holy trinity'. Maybe when I'm older.

Domdaniel: <Jess> No, I suspect Eyal is simply enjoying the opportunity to hide out in your place for a while. If the number freaks really bugged him, he'd zap us into infinity. Or somewhere like that. Tophet, maybe.

Domdaniel: The trouble with Bond trivia is that it's much easier to find than Bond nontrivia.

Although one of the original books has a good game of bridge in it, complete with (rigged) hands.

I shook hands with a Bond villain once, but he was so evil he made me forget his name.

jessicafischerqueen: <Dom> not just Bridge!! Detailed <roulette, baccart> scenes, and the very excellent <rock, paper, scissors> scene against <Tiger Tanaka>.

Read all the Bond books in one summer as a kid
Trivial? no. Sexist and racist? sure.

But who's to say what's really right and wrong in our modern age, with so many new ideas-- and products!!

jessicafischerqueen: Jeez since we're all actually around at the same time (rare occurence) maybe we should go over to the <Beer> forum and hold some kind of <drunken colloquium>.

I'd have to start drinking again, but a small price to pay for attending a colloquium!!

May-03-07  Eyal: <a good game of bridge in it, complete with (rigged) hands.> In <Moonraker> - definitely the best constructed episode in the Fleming corpus, IMO.

jessicafischerqueen: <Eyal> it is very fine, agreed.

But I disagree on <best>.

I vote <rock paper scissor> game against <Tiger Tanaka>.

Also, <Fleming> really knew how to engage the reader.

When I read the series, I was not a fan of the <Bond films>, and I'm still not. But the memories of the <fleming> books remain vivid.

Jess of the contradicting <Eyal> on a literary judgment

May-03-07  WBP: <Eyal> <<a good game of bridge in it, complete with (rigged) hands.> In <Moonraker> - definitely the best constructed episode in the Fleming corpus, IMO.> Doesn't Fleming have Bond use an old Ely Culbertson trick hand in the book? (Culbertson was quite a character!)

jessicafischerqueen: the <Yarborough> is a mythical bridge hand in which all four players receive all of one suit.

the <Guiness Book of Records> reports that several people have claimed that a <Yarborough> was actually dealt, but the <Guiness> folk will not believe them, due to the fact that the odds against a <yarborough> being dealt are greater than the number of atoms in the known universe.

Domdaniel: <Observation Platform> Hmm. I just noticed that the 'recent activity' zone at the top of the forum, which usually displays the last ten pages visited, now only shows the 3 forums I've been to *today* -- here, Jess & Eyal.

Is this a tweak? A glitch? An optical illusion? Have CG listened to the people complaining about having their ill-judged outbursts on display for everyone to see? Or what?

Or is it just me?

Any ideas....?

May-03-07  WBP: <Dom> <this belongs in <Eyal's>, because his is, after all, the mathematics forum, but> do they have to be pages from ten different forums?

Domdaniel: This -- <hitman84: <Domdaniel>I see that you posted about Kramnik recently, does math have something to do with this ?> is the only reason I noticed the change. I went to see if I'd said anything about Kramnik -- cos I don't actually *remember* saying anything about Vlad recently, apart from noting that his name began with K.

And no, that wasn't especially mathematical...

Domdaniel: I knew it. It's just me. Jess's forum still has a selection of her posts going back to Apr 30, while Eyal's go back to Apr 29.

But I've been put on a 24-hour datestamp shackle. A kibitz temporal chain-gang. A cell by date.

Domdaniel: <Jess> Gotcha, I'm afraid. A Yarborough is -- I think -- a bridge hand with zero 'points', ie no cards higher than a ten. They get dealt approximately every 1760 hands, I think. That's a guesstimate, but they happen all the time.

The 13-of-a-kind hand is more of an urban bridge myth. They get described regularly but should in fact be incredibly rare. One per geological aeon with every bacterium on earth playing nonstop, kinda thing.

Domdaniel: <Yarborough> A slight technical correction here: no card above a *nine*. Named for the Earl of Yarborough, who bet against them.

Now that we've been poking around the back of the dictionary, we could have a proper witenagemot. With wyverns from the yakuza.
