Domdaniel: Maurice Kennefick died over the new year, 2018-2019. RIP. It was many years since I spoke to him. He gave up chess, I reckon, towards the end of the 80s, though even after that he was sometimes lured out for club games. I still regard this game, even after so many years, as the ...

   Jan-06-19 Maurice Kennefick (replies)

Domdaniel: Kennefick died over the 2018-19 New Year. Formerly one of the strongest players in Ireland, he was the first winner of the Mulcahy tournament, held in honour of E.N. Mulcahy, a former Irish champion who died in a plane crash. I played Kennefick just once, and had a freakish win, ...

Domdaniel: <NBZ> -- Thanks, NBZ. Enjoy your chortle. Apropos nothing in particular, did you know that the word 'chortle' was coined by Lewis Carroll, author of 'Alice in Wonderland'? I once edited a magazine called Alice, so I can claim a connection. 'Chortle' requires the jamming ...

Domdaniel: Moral: if you haven't encountered it before, take it seriously. Remember Miles beating Karpov with 1...a6 at Skara. Many so-called 'irregular' openings are quite playable.

   Dec-30-18 Robert Enders vs S H Langer, 1968

Domdaniel: <HMM> - Heh, well, yes. I also remembered that Chuck Berry had a hit with 'My Ding-a-ling' in the 1970s. I'm not sure which is saddest -- that the author of Johnny B. Goode and Memphis Tennessee and Teenage Wedding - among other short masterpieces - should sink to such ...

  Domdaniel: <Jess> Svart Gev Opp.

I am now disconnecting the Frog and feeding him to the Dog. Final reading list:

Under the Frog, by Tibor Fischer
Froggy Went a-courting, by anon.

And a quote. It's the caption to a photo taken in 1900, showing some young men from the wealthier classes acting strangely. One of them looks like Bertie Wooster captured in mid-orgasm (if camera shutters could handle such rapid exposures in 1900), while another looks like Gussie Fink-Nottle entranced by a particularly neuter newt. A third wears a dress, over his face.

The book is called Hypnotism As It Is, by X. Lamotte Sage, MA, PhD, LL.D.

The photo also appears on the cover of The Disinheriting Party, by John Clute (1977). Perhaps some enterprising person will track the image down.

The caption reads: "Hypnotized young men believe themselves to be darkies participating in a great cake walk".

- Make mine a madeira.

jessicafischerqueen: And here's one for <Doggimus>:

<Opossums> are actually a nuisance here where I live, but in <Edmonton, Alberta>, a very different problem with <Aussie Wildlife> is occurring.

I quote from our <Vancouver Province> Newspaper:

"Prehistoric Austrailan Tree Ordered Detained until 2009"

Good grief. I wonder what laws the <Ozzy Tree> broke in particular?

Probably <Drunk and Disorderly>

No letters please. Some of my best friends are from <Australia>.

Or <Austria>, can't remember which at the moment.

Domdaniel: <Jess> Ah, yes, the dog's nuts of the periodic table indeed ... I had some of that rubidium caught between my toes once ... stepped into the shower and ... lucky it was a sonic shower, eh?

And as for cease-and-desistium, or whatever they called it.... boom.

We get Brainiac on cable here. That's what they do, blow things up, including members of the public. Great fun, science abuse.

Jun-06-07  Ragh: <Dom> Thanks for the explanation about the word.

The queen's caught spamming here.. 12 in a row..

Domdaniel: Yeah, I was briefly tempted to delete some of 'em ... slow her up a bit.

But I couldn't. Too much of a softy.

And it wouldn't stop the Queen reaching escape velocity anyway...

Jun-06-07  achieve: ONEHUNDREDANDEIGHTY!!!

Still, a few yards away from a nine-dart-finish but nevertheless.. It's in the bag.

That's my inspired post of the day..

(I am pathetic in a way - very childlike.. And thinking in score stats)

Coulda been worse. They might have chopped it up and used it as a <bench warrant>.

Can't say more. Australian Woody Woodpecker jokes are officially <twinlark territory>.

  Domdaniel: <Nimzo Gambit>
Look again, Jess -- it's 4.Qg4, which the great Aron *did* sometimes play against the French. A <Queen> move. Not particularly the best move, though.

Your suggestion, <4.g4>, is, ah, quite a different nother kettle of fish. Almost horrible enough to be worth trying. The JFQ Gambit, perhaps?

Not that you are actually horrible, or anything, unless they deserve it, and... [*stops digging*].

Jun-06-07  Ragh: <Domdaniel: Yeah, I was briefly tempted to delete some of 'em ...> Too late. That dozen's just a drop in the mighty ocean. Escape velocity already reached; cruise set; just need to cover the celestial distances now.. one-by-one.
Jun-06-07  WBP: <Dom> Greetings, mate. I see you're in good sprits today (or perhaps under the influence of them). Congrats on the big 180! But of course now they're saying that 180 is the new 140 (that in keeping with the saying that 50 is the new 40--I know, the ratios are not the same, but what the hey).

Keep cruising!
