 | | jessicafischerqueen: Heh Which goes to show how poorly <Spassky> prepared. <Efim Geller> was well aware of the <Panno Game> and actually warned <Spassky>. <Spassky,> however, was so resistant to listening to his training team that he airily dismissed <Geller's> concerns by saying <"He always plays e4">. Hence <Spassky's> match preparation for the Black pieces focused almost entirely on <1...c5>, and of course <Spassky> got MURDERED when he played <1...e5>, allowing <Fischer> to play his beloved <Spanish Game>.
Arguably, <Fischer> was at that point in his career the greatest practioner of the <Ruy Lopez> in the history of chess. <Geller> was so frustrated that he wanted to leave <Spassky> to the dogs, but such an act would have been political suicide. Back in <Russia> for the post-Match "dismantling session," <Geller> was merciless in his criticism of <Spassky>. One senses, perhaps, <Geller's> own frustration in not being able to beat <Fischer> himself. Though he was certainly correct about warning <Spassky> about non-e4 openings from <Fischer>. |
|
| Jul-19-07 | | Eyal: Btw, Geller had a very good score against Fischer... (http://www.chessgames.com/perl/ches...) It seems that the guys who gave Fischer (relatively) the most trouble - Geller, Korchnoi, and Tal - were the ones who knew especially well how to make things murky and lead the game into the kind of "illogical" positions in which Fischer didn't feel so comfortable. |
|
Jul-19-07
 | | Open Defence: it was often written that Fischer disliked irrational positions, i think that prompted Tal to choose a line in the Winawer that led to such complications though he didnt often play the Black side of the French Defence..... |
|
| Jul-19-07 | | Eyal: <Deffi> Yeah, you're probably right - and that's the kind of game where if you overlook one tactical shot, it's over. See also the games where he lost to Geller in 23 and 25(!) moves: Fischer vs Geller, 1967, Fischer vs Geller, 1967 |
|
Jul-19-07
 | | Open Defence: also players like Geller and Tal did not care if the position was objectively better or worse... they were more given to unusual ideas, creativity, inspiration rather than probably playing the "best" move.. Tal, Geller, Bronstein, Korchnoi, such players did not mind playing inferrior continuations if it led to an interesting or complicated position, they were not dogmatic this must have irked Fischer who always strived to prove the truth in the position and could be dogmatic, but strangely Fischer himself chose openings like the Grunfeld and Sicilian Najdorf, which often lent themselves to irrational positions, I think there was a marked difference between the Fischer of the 60s and Fischer of the 70s... I think the Fischer of the 70s was ready for most anything though... |

 | | jessicafischerqueen: excellent points!
However, what <the Fischer of the 70s> was REALLY most ready for was KICKING ASS all over the place in a way that terrified, absolutely terrified, the <Russian Chess Machine>. He was a freaking steamroller.
Nobody can take an iota away from his accomplishment. In fact, <Spassky's> iconoclasm with resepect to his own team of analysts is seen by some as evidence that he admired <Fischer> for "going his own way," meaning doing virtually ALL his preparation alone, on his own. And, above all else, perhaps, NOBODY EVER worked harder than <Fischer>. Ever. Not even a little bit close.
What he did had never been done before, and it very likely will never be done again. NO computer help, NO team of top GMs at his beck and call. The man was/is a sociopathic bully/cretin.
However, he did things nobody would ever have deemed imaginable. NOTHING can be taken away from his chess achievement. It is LUDICROUS to even entertain such a notion for ten seconds. Jessica_Fischer_Queen |

 | | jessicafischerqueen: Yes, thanks to two of our esteemed friends and colleagues here at <CG.com>, YOU TOO can learn how to win with the infamous <Orangutan Opening>. In this chapter, our own redoubtable <mack> goes down swinging against <bill wall's> Simian Swagger: B Wall vs M Daniels, 2004 |
|
Jul-19-07
 | | jessicafischerqueen: More <Orangutan> chapters to come, I'm just researching it because I've half a mind. |
|
Jul-19-07
 | | jessicafischerqueen: Oh hang on "half a mind to try it out on Yahoo" I mean, but I'm not going in with my pants down. Have to research it first a bit.
Who could resist an <Orangutan>? I once knew an <Orangutan> named Frank. Rangy, loping kind of fellow, fun at parties. Especially on the <Rue Morgue>. |
|
Jul-19-07
 | | Domdaniel: Hey, let's have an International Simian Day... do I get to be Primate of All Ireland? I had a weird tussle with an Orangutan recently, as some of you saw. I murdered the brute in the opening, and then I helped him to murder me. |
|
Jul-19-07
 | | jessicafischerqueen: <Dom> you've really got to stop replaying <Poe Stories> OTB. I thought your efforst in the <Open> were <Ajaxesque, if not Herculean>. As <Primate>, if someone said <screw you!> You could say <Screw me! I'm the Primate! Screw you!> Then you could rip his arms out of his sockets.
Just saying |
|
| Jul-19-07 | | Red October: Fischer was a patzer ;-p |
|
Jul-19-07
 | | Domdaniel: Thank you, O Fischer of Noughties.
But apart from your effervescent contributions, this dump just isn't attracting the type of contribution that it used to. Therefore... <Inventors' Corner>
Q. What do you get if you cross a lavatory with a microwave? A. Hot flushes and boil-in-the-bog rice.
Just a thought. |
|
Jul-19-07
 | | jessicafischerqueen: Heh. Not bad, not bad.
What do you mean man! The contribution level is HIGH thanks to <mack, Deffi, Eyal> in particular. Not to mention <Bill> when he's not too busy directing his <sock puppet theatre>. FROGSPAWN remains the highest quality chess page on the Net, and, as <Mack> pointed out, the posters here are not <unidimensinal geeks who only talk about chess>. Good grief!!

 | | jessicafischerqueen: PS I have a "on the phone" job interview in 8 minutes so I'm in a bit of a tizzy. I passed the "in person interview" already, but they want to ask me "some more questions." SOUNDS OMINOUS Ack! I was going to "study" all morning for it, but instead I stayed up to God knows when last night researching the <Orangutan> and then slept in and then started gabbing at CG.com even though I'm supposed to be online with my Chesscoach etc. etc. ACK

| Jul-19-07 | | Ziggurat: < PS I have a "on the phone" job interview in 8 minutes so I'm in a bit of a tizzy.> For the Korea teaching gig?
You'll do fine. Good luck. |

 | | Domdaniel: Viva Jess. Also viva the two bald guys in Butt Springs, Idaho. And viva Canadians. Don't impress them *too* much, ma reine. They might kidnap you or monopolize you or - heaven forfend - *pay* you. |
|
Jul-19-07
 | | jessicafischerqueen: LOL <bald guys> that brings back fond memories of our devoted <Mr. Kurtz>, I have to say. Poor sod. He got steamrolled in <Ottawa> and <Fischer> wasn't even playing. |
|
Jul-19-07
 | | Domdaniel: I thought Kurtzy came 2nd in Ottawa? Was that a failure by Kurtzian standards? I wonder how he scored otherwise. As it were. The phone thing went well? You're Queen of the Galaxy now? |
|
Jul-19-07
 | | jessicafischerqueen: OH well more power to him. I've been too busy studying the <Orangutan> to keep up with the latest cricket scores. My apologies to the <esteemed cannon fodder>, may he rest in peace. Oh he's not dead yet, that's right.
Never mind then!
er.. no, but I believe the answer is 42?
Is that divisible by 23?
I don't "do" maths. |
|
Jul-19-07
 | | Domdaniel: Of course you do maths, you just call it something else* because you don't want people to think you're a geek. Me, I don't mind what people think. I'm not even sure people *can* think. (*something else -- eg, blindfold chess, flower arranging, intuitive psychology, gonzo accountancy -- all math in drag.) |

 | | Domdaniel: <Powderfingerology> Yep, the numbers still add up to nothing, and Big John's still drinking, and the river took Emmy Lou (he should never have taught her texas hold 'em, and she shouldn't have gone all in on the last card...) ... but these are all established facts. "I just turned twenty-two" is our current theme. 23 would've been better, though there might be rhyme problems. Prof Shakey Quant

| Jul-19-07 | | mack: <as <Mack> pointed out, the posters here are not <unidimensinal geeks who only talk about chess>.> I never said that, did I?
P.S. What type of spaniel bit your head right off, Jess??? |
|
Jul-19-07
 | | Domdaniel: I'm thinking of adding Aronian to my list of favorite players. Bet his results nosedive. |
|
| Jul-19-07 | | mack: <I don't "do" maths.> If there are three words I'd used to describe you, it's 'innumerate'. |
