| Dec-04-07 | | achieve: <van Wely interview> In fairness- except for the middle finger-part, it's all true- it was a very spontaneous interview, and Kramnik has already asked Van Wely to support him again in 2008, vW said. When asked "how much stronger is he than you?", vW answered that, of course, Kramnik is the stronger of the two in general- and that he did feel a sense of pride to be valued fully as a partner to discuss chess with the great Kramnik at a more or less equal level. PS. <Dom> <Jess> ? A few, perhaps nitpicky, questions... Is it a established rule in the Commonwealth/America to write van Wely as <Van Wely>, capital V ? In Dutch we write the "tussenvoegsels" in a person's name sans capitals... I find this a problem too when using the cg player directory for the very reason it seems inconsistent in that respect... I understand that there may be a difference as far as starting a sentence with the name- as opposed to it being in the middle of a sentence... In a Dutch phonebook you'd always find it like this:
Wiel, J. van der
Wely, L. van
Oosterom, J. van
For example: Player Directory - In the left column (top) you see the Van- and Van Der names listed down to: VAN DER STERREN, Paul 1974-2001 464
2468 VAN DER STRICHT, Geert - as the "last" two names listed... But Van WELY doesn't appear there. In the right column, though, all the names appear right at the bottom, with VAN DER WIEL, VAN WELY, VAN WIJGERDEN etc. ... I will copy the Post Scriptum to the Chessgames forumpage as well, because there is an irregularity there, I think. |
|
| Dec-04-07 | | achieve: <Jess/Dom> No need for any effort to answer my above questions - I found most of the answer on http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Tussen... Listing Dutch names in english obviously goes by the prefixes that are written in capitals, alla time... The irregularity in the CG database on the "Van double You's" remains, though. heh - I am so irregular
sigh

 | | Domdaniel: <Niels> I'd actually wondered about the 'van W' ordering too, having seen some of 'em at the end of the 'V' list and others at the start. Odd. Another alpha convention is treating 'Mc-' names as though they really begin with 'Mac'. Simpler, I guess. |

 | | jessicafischerqueen: Hi <Hitman> how the heck are you? And there's more--
A <novelty> used by <Kasparov> against <Anand> in their match was actually discovered by <GM Dafdalkdfjafalkdjfajf>, and imagine the shock/irony when it was disclosed that HE had stolen it orginally from <GM Brasdkasalllavivichasdkhk>. I read it in a book on the <Kasparov-Anand> match last summer. Clearly I've forgotten the names, but I'm pretty sure I got a rough estimate correct. Frogspawn <seconds chess history department> |

| Dec-04-07 | | achieve: Why do I need 5000 words when <Dom> says the same in two sentences? All those crazy triple names from France and Holland are condensed to one word for the name... <Jess> knows this better than anybody from those names in the NHL, right Jess? Like Mario Lemieux and Dirk Vanderbilt etc, etc..
We're lucky they still put some spaces in between, is what I realise by now... Thanks <Hitman> for the recommendation - and indeed - how the heck are you? Very busy, I read the other day... Cheers mate. |

-- Márai was "born with the century" (1900)- and In 1919, Márai left the country [Hungary] and continued his career in journalism in Germany. In 1923, he married Lola Matzner and
moved to Paris. By then he was a correspondent to several German and Hungarian newspapers and a novelist and poet of
growing reputation. He traveled all over Europe and in the Middle East, dispatching travelogues and essays. In 1934, he and
his wife moved back to Hungary and settled in Budapest, in Mikó street, just under the Buda Castle, at the edge of the city
park, Vérmezõ.
That year, he published 'The Confessions of a Bourgeois' (Egy polgár vallomásai), the recollections of his
youth which has remained one of his best loved masterpieces. This work stands with Elias Canetti’s Tongue Set Free and
Gregor von Rezzori’s Memoirs of an Anti-Semite, as the most evocative, both deeply personal and philosophical, reflection
on the 20th century demise of humanism through the disintegration of the Austro-Hungarian Empire.-- Most of his work was translated post-humously. (1989) I will buy the book as soon as possible... |

 | | jessicafischerqueen: Hi <Dom>!!
I wanted to thank you for that lovely <John Cale parody> poem you left in my forum. Also, since you asked, here is my Correspondence win over <Kingscrusher>. The first 14 moves are theory so REALLY I only played 10 moves. 1. e4 c5
2. Nf3 Nc6
3. d4 cxd4
4. Nxd4 Nf6
5. Nc3 e5
6. Nb5 d6
7. Bg5 a6
8. Na3 b5
9. Nd5 Be7
10. Bxf6 Bxf6
11. c3 O-O
12. Nc2 Rb8
13. Be2 g6
14. Bg4 Bb7
15. Qd3 Bg7
16. O-O Ne7
17. Ne3 Nxd5
18. Nxd5 f5
19. Bf3 Kh8
20. Rd1 Qg5
21. Kh1 Rf7
22. a4 Rf8
23. axb5 axb5
24. Ra5 Bxd5
25. Qxd5 fxe4
26. Qxe4 Rf4
27. Qd5 Rxf3
28. gxf3 Qh4
29. Ra8 Qxf2
However, I am 3 for 3 now in <letsplaychess.com> Correspondence and my "provisional rating" is somehow <2099>. I expect that will drop precipitously after the double round robin is finished- I'm playing against <Kingscrusher, Canstein, and Jrobichess>. Realistically, I expect to score 2.0.
But I will try for 6.0.
My goodness anyone who doesn't like chess is... well I don't know, I just
