 | | Domdaniel: <Jess> Not sure how to express that in Pidgin. However, 'hair' is 'gras bilong hed' and 'root of tree' is 'ars bilong tri'. And Al-Qaida comes out as 'ars bilong Allah' which may explain why it hasn't really taken off in PNG. The Pidgin Loft

 | | jessicafischerqueen: <Dom, Dom, Dom, Dom, Dom...> Well OK you have a lot of friends here. This is not always a "good thing," however, due to the annoying possiblity that these "friends" may attempt some kind of <intervention>. You know, like "deprogramming" in the back of a badly painted 80s Van etc. Now, your <sums> may be forgiven as a kind of <hyper math mania>... harmless. Your predeliction to pretend you are are a character in a <science fiction story> could be forgiven on the grounds of your being <Irish> alone... But insisting you are a native from <Papua New Guinea> who speaks <pigdin> may be pushing it too far, if only for the distinct possibility that you may already actually have intereviewed <Michael Rockefeller> and are just waiting for the best "bid" before publishing it. OK I forgot where I'm going with this now.
Well I hope to see you in the "gallery" tonight.
Regards,

 | | Domdaniel: The Minstrel will be in the Gallery, strumming his lute and singing songs of praise to Richard Dawkins, in Pidgin. |

Jan-25-08
 | | Domdaniel: <Niels> -- <focus pocus> -- wasn't there a Dutch 'rock' group of that name? I had one of their records once, but I brought it back and exchanged it for a David Bowie disc after 24 hours. |
|
Jan-25-08
 | | Domdaniel: <Jess> Funny, I was just thinking of Huey Long. If he'd married Maud Gonne, their children would be Long Gonne. |
|
| Jan-25-08 | | achieve: <Dom> Taking that record back was a very un-wise thing to do... Musically, the band Focus was quite talented, with one of the best guitar players in the world, Jan Akkerman, in it, and indeed the yodeling lunatic Thijs van Leer (fine master of the FLUTE btw- mot the lute..) in this song from 1971 "Hocus Pocus" -- That was a vehicle to show off J. Akkerman's licks, and a sure statement they were shrimp-stoned for having Thijs do the yodeling... http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=bpV5... (as you'll notice the URL claerly shows <watch> foll. by a <questionmark>) PS. Your memory is impressive, as well as your ability to make "connections" (I think 'Connection' was the name of one of their albums-not sure..) |
|
| Jan-25-08 | | achieve: <Dom> I was mistaken. Thijs van Leer did make an album called 'Introspection' (I got the ection-part right) - and in fact was brought up, musically, very disciplined, classical training... He worked together with Rogier van Otterloo, who composed all the music for films like Turks Fruit (J. Wolkers - you may have read one of his novels) en 'Soldaat van Oranje' (which also marked the rise to prominence of Paul Verhoeven as director and Jeroen Krabbé as a [in my view mediocre], actor...) Jeroen en Tim Krabbe are brothers, from a very artistic family, although Jeroen's son Martijn going into Television/showbizz can only be viewed upon as "very unfortunate"... So there, dom, you've been updated and I had a chance to upgrade my knowledge! The Dutch are from a small country but we sure were/are brimful of talent. |
|
Jan-25-08
 | | Domdaniel: <Niels> I know of two Dutch people called Krabbe and they turn out to be *brothers*? Amazing. Jeroen isn't *that* bad an actor, surely? Apart from his films with Verhoeven -- was he in De Vjierde Man, and I should've said The Fourth Man, shouldn't I? -- I liked Legend of the Holy Drinker. Brimful of talent, no question. |
|
| Jan-25-08 | | achieve: <Dom> Jeroen is not my type for reasons I cannot explain clearly, yet, will give that a shot at another time... However he was the Director/actor of the movie 'Left Luggage' and I remember being impressed by that work... (1998) Regarding your pronounciation of Dutch words/names I expect the worst, (cuz I never heard you speak), as long as Krabbé - doesn't sound remotely like "Crabby"... Try Kra as in Bah -- and bbé as in bay the "double bb" make the a sound short... (Amazing stuff innit? ;-) But since you have a Dutch friend(s) I assume he has educated you somewhat in that respect. Gonna watch Mr. Brooks now -- Jess gave it a niner out of ten -- so I am brimful of excited expectation tonight! |
|
Jan-25-08
 | | Domdaniel: <Niels> Ohhh, it's so easy to tie oneself in knots here. I wrote that I 'should have said The Fourth Man', not because of Dutch pronunciation, but because of spelling: I assumed that I'd spelled De Vjierde Man wrongly (and maybe I did...). And I doubt whether I could ever like Focus -- too *musical* for my punkish, atonal, tone-deaf taste. That entire branch of 70s music based on virtuosity leaves me cold, I'm afraid. But I do remember buying Dutch rock music magazines when no Irish equivalent existed, so the Netherlands has done its bit for my musical education anyway... |

 | | Domdaniel: ... I'm still trying to work out what befell Arik Braun ... |
|
| Jan-25-08 | | achieve: <Domdaniel: <Niels> Ohhh, it's so easy to tie oneself in knots here.> No that was all my doing, and I did it even ON PURPOSE -- yes I was bad, very bad... I knew you spelled it wrong and decided to ramble on you, a potential foreigner, and the writing and speaking of Dutch words... WHY? Exactly? I couldn't tell...
It's fun to try and throw things off balance, and by all means keep doing that to me, too. heh
Fact is that Wijk aan Zee is even misspelled every other time... Speaking of Arik... He drew with van der Wiel today? And he has had like 4 or 5 zero's in a row? Disappointing for the lad... I haven't played through one of his games this week though, so cant give a valuable contribution as to what happened... Caruana though is at full speed. |
|
| Jan-25-08 | | achieve: PS. <Dom>-<I assumed that I'd spelled De Vjierde Man wrongly (and maybe I did...).> Yes, it simply is Vierde, without the "j" -- but Dutch movies are always immediately translated? (Like recently Zwartboek to Black Book and "De Ontdekking van de Hemel" to discovery of Heaven (Mulisch' brilliant novel) -- I mean that it's only natural for you to write the English titles... In Holland all films keep their original title, but to my horror they sometimes translate/alter titles. (But that's very rare) |
|
| Jan-25-08 | | achieve: What caught my eye looking back on round 11 is the loss of Sargissian, very strong, against little 13 year old Yifan Hou. Very fine endgame after a cunning ploy/tactic earlier... Really impressive... Sargissian on 3.5/11 is quite astonishing, to me.
Yifan has < 7 > decided games now. Erwin l'Ami managed to gently lower her off the balcony in the previous round though... It's all happening in Wik (most often mis-spell) aan Zee! (I'll be going over for Sunday's final round !! ) |
|
Jan-25-08
 | | Domdaniel: <Niels> Aha. Dank u wel. As for films, titles & translations ... the earliest Verhoeven film I saw was 'Spetters' (which seems to be untranslatable) -- or at least nobody has tried, that I know of. *How* could anyone misspell Wijk aan Zee? It's an institution, like Hatsings. Sic. |
|
| Jan-26-08 | | achieve: <Dom> Re: <Spetters> A) When you smack the water with your hand you'll get spetters (splashes?) B) When you lower (a bit frosty) chips into the frying pan you'll see and hear spetters C) A Spetter is slang for what we call a drop-dead knockout/hunk (male & female) So translating was very hard in this particular case. <Hatsings>!! Very neatly done! (I didn't spot it last night - I rest my case) |
