Domdaniel: Maurice Kennefick died over the new year, 2018-2019. RIP. It was many years since I spoke to him. He gave up chess, I reckon, towards the end of the 80s, though even after that he was sometimes lured out for club games. I still regard this game, even after so many years, as the ...

Domdaniel: Kennefick died over the 2018-19 New Year. Formerly one of the strongest players in Ireland, he was the first winner of the Mulcahy tournament, held in honour of E.N. Mulcahy, a former Irish champion who died in a plane crash. I played Kennefick just once, and had a freakish win, ...

Domdaniel: <NNiels> It's the old double-N problem again ... but Deffi deffinnetly did her homework. Very thorough, accounnt aunts.

The tact is in the text (and the text is intact)

<Domdaniel: <Niels> I think the 1997 Baburin-Nunn might have influenced this game from last year's Irish championships. Simpler, of course, but the same idea of Nxd5 combined with threats on the c-file. [Event "IRL-ch"]
[Site "Dublin"]
[Date "2007.06.30"]
[Round "3"]
[White "McCarthy,G"]
[Black "Khonji,A Hameed"]
[Result "1-0"]

Trying to pick up some loose ends, Dom, that is I kept thinking:"Still gotta look at that game... must be buried by now..." -- No excuse... FOUND IT!!

Schoolbook play! 6...Be7 might deserve a (?), although it *seems* OK, but it is not... This is a remaining weakness of mine, to exploit a slight inaccuracy by an opponent/to avoid playing inaccurate, albeit slightly, in this phase of the closing stages of an opening.

Tension and Tempo in the center are the main course here- and Be7 is simply too passive in this situation, from a Master level point of view... You're using the Tempo immediately, by actively exchanging the center pawns- resulting in a position where Black has to plat 100% accurate not to have his pieces overworked... (Nc5 Qd7 Be6 are all under pressure and after Rc1 h6, the mistake is made)

Then moves 11 to 16 are the perfect and swift execution, forcing the Black player to make more mistakes as he is having a headache as to what the hell happened in 15 moves...

I played on in the closing position against my Rybka on 1-2 min/move and reached an endgame with pawns up but with OCBs -- which is always very educational to play, analyse and investigate, as in this case White has 3 pawn islands...

In short still has to be executed-- Technique required against the Big Bad Machine (2500+)

Already very pleased I got into this position, I thought about a few possibilities, and wanted to play the most efficient move for a sure Touch Down

Pos after 31 f5+ Kg5

What is the best play for White?

(I saw it quite quickly, but it *felt* risky* -- as us mortals are always wary to offer a pawn to a silicon Monster...)

Domdaniel: <Niels> Think I'd be confident of winning that, opposite bishops or not. Even slow moves like 32.e6 should do it, though black has ...Be7 to stop the advancing pawns.

Is 32.b4 playable, to cut off the bishop? If 32...Bxb4 then 33.h4+ followed by Rf4+ wins the bishop. But if he doesn't take on b4, is the advancing f-pawn fast enough?

Hmm. Maybe 32.h4+ immediately is better. There are some mate threats in there as well as the idea of cutting off the bishop with b4 and playing f5-f6-f7-f8. If 32...Kg4 then perhaps 33.f6.

No, I seem to be throwing away too many pawns here. No ... I just don't see anything immediately decisive. Can't make either b4 or h4 work, mainly due to ...Kg4. I'd have to try to win it the slow way - keep the e/f pawn front intact, tie black down preventing their advance, and then advance the queenside majority. It should win even in a pure bishops ending, if the rooks come off.

So what am I not seeing, if the list isn't too long, please?

Feb-21-08  achieve: <Dom> Heh I was just on my way out as you popped up.... So you do have timing...

OK yes h4+ is the way to go I believe...

I wouldn't DARE say you're missing much, eh?

Well maybe I would

More conclusive stuff later... as I too am interested in the "slow" way... I'm interested in everything!

Domdaniel: <Niels> My mistake was looking for a puzzle-type tactic. 32.h4+ is actually the best way of winning (relatively) slowly. I'd seen that my other idea, 32.e6, would run into a little trouble after 32...Re5.

So h4+ distracts the king, ensuring that the e+f pawns survive as a pair. They're the key to a win. I'd worried about black moves like ...Rg3+ too, but it's harmless.

The best idea is probably 32.h4+ Kxh4 (or ...Kg4) 33.e6! -- when the pawns can't be stopped. (33...Re5 34.Bc4 -- though 34.f6!? should also win)

Feb-21-08  achieve: ... Of course you are not missing much -- By h4+ I thought I could keep the king one move further away from the pawns, and promote easily with e6 f6 e7, that is, the Ba3 needs to be sacced and the win is a formality... (My comp's ...Kg5 is questionable, prior to the FEN position, I think)

But without making it too elaborate on this experiment... Did you want to play h4 Kg4?

I can just play e6, as it is attacked anyway, and the Black King is cut off ?

So I thought Kxh4 was forced, since Kh5 is a forced mate after Rf4 .

But I'll be looking some more into this...

It's just that I'm wondering why you feel h4+ wouldn't work. I don't see it...

Feb-21-08  achieve: that was a jinx thing...

Domdaniel: Another tournament starts tomorrow, btw. I'm breaking my self-imposed rule and stepping down to the 'B' 'Challengers' section. With the intention of winning it, of course. Also, the masters section has some megastars like Svidler, so they're excluding riffraff rated under 2000. Sigh.

Still. I used to win events like this in the 80s. Why not now?

Feb-21-08  achieve: Indeed <Dom> Why not ?

For the life of me I couldn't think of a reason, as long as you keep the tension right... Probably you will win a few easy ones which is in turn a challenge cause you can feel complacent...

I'm just rambling

I'd say enjoy the experience, be confident (you are a good player, period), and try and get that competitive juice going that will provide you with the energy to play strong... No masterpieces are required.

That's just my initial reaction. As a former top competitor (albeit in another sport)

Feb-21-08  achieve: <as a former top competitor>

That "top" bit has little to do with it of course...

Confidence though, whereever from, makes all the difference usually...

<Dom> you have all of my respect and admiration that you are playing so much these days.

I'd give my right breast (Amazon style!) to play in a rated tournament..

Domdaniel: <Jess> Thanks. It should be interesting. Also it's taking place in Limerick, which seems to be my lucky venue -- it's where I had 4/5 in a tournament before losing to a 2370 guy, and it's also where I beat the two strongest players I've beaten since my, uh, comeback in 2006.

Playing against opponents in the 1600-2000 range only should be good for me. I feel I should be able to beat any of 'em, but know it will be tough.

In some other open tournaments, playing a beginner in one round and a master in the next is unsettling. That's my excuse...

Do preserve your pre-Amazonian status, won't you. I'm sure the opportunity to play in a real chess event will come along anyway without actual self-mutilation.

On the other hand ... didn't the original Amazons do it to make use of bows'n'arrows easier? Might be useful in blitz too ...

jessicafischerqueen: Heh don;t forget the "fear factor" <Dom>---

Search and Destroy with Respect-- there are no easy wins, PARTICULARLY the easy wins, if that makes any sense.

during an "easy win" <Josh Waitzkin> started thinking about going to a party later that night with his girlfriend and promptly got his ass handed to him on a plate.

<Amazons>... I have a feeling that story may be apocryphal.

However, I think the <moon landing> was faked, so don't go by mean.

Ah ... one of *those* parties, was it?

I will remember the Jeffican Fear Factor, my Queen, don't worry. Also the good Dr Niels' Confidence thingy. In the right amounts they should do the trick.

Plus the brain steroids, of course.

Look forward to the reports.

BTW I just figured out why you say <Jeffican> (by GOOBLING)

heh I broke down and did it cuz it was driving me crazy.

So there used to be a CURIOUS relationship between the letters "f" and "s" eh?

These same consonants were pronounced as unvoiced [f], [s], and [¥è] (as in thin) when they came at the beginning or end of a word or adjacent to at least one unvoiced sound. So f is unvoiced in ful 'full', cr©¡ft 'craft' and wulf 'wolf'. Similarly s is unvoiced in settan 'set', frost 'frost', and wulfas 'wolves', and ©/©£ is unvoiced in ©©¡t 'that' and streng©£ 'strength'.

Who knew?

Well you, I guess.

English kicks ass (no letters please)

Get it? NO LETTERS PLEASE??

For both of you: I saw the <Lars and the Real Girl> film on free streaming video and I LIKED IT A LOT.

It is a bit sedately paced, but exceedingly weird.

Well I liked it.

Shoot me.

Feb-22-08  achieve: <Jess> Don't tell but <kingkongcrush> has trouble with the "th" sound.... It's just a full blown fff
