| Dec-22-06 | | Eyal: That's what happens to he who doesn't heed murphy's law ("Every analysis not saved daily in a new Fritz/Chessbase file will disappear, and at the worst possible moment"). Well, worst-case scenario – we'll win with 40.Qf7 instead… |
|
| Dec-22-06 | | Eyal: BTW, the main import of the previous message was supposed to be: cheer up. |
|
Dec-22-06
 | | Domdaniel: <Eyal> Maybe it was better lost after all. The reconstruction effort has turned up a gaping hole in the variation with 40.Rf7 Re2. Those ...Rxg2+ threats can be nasty. I'll still post my findings later on. |
|
| Dec-22-06 | | Eyal: You know - last night, before I went to sleep, I fooled around a little with this variation on my Fritz, and I noticed that after a certain number of plies it was recommending 40...Re2 and evaluations were dropping to the 0.00 zone. I made myself a mental note to ask you about this variation. |
|
| Dec-22-06 | | Eyal: However, sliding forward with Fritz on one key variation - 40...Re2 41.h4 Rxg2+ (no other choice now) - I don't think black has a perpetual. See the variation I posted in my forum. |
|
Dec-22-06
 | | Domdaniel: <Eyal> That's the variation that concerned me -- something like 40...Re2 41.h4 [this wins with the rook elsewhere, eg e1] Rxg2+ 42.Kxg2 Qxc2+ 43.Rf2 Qe4+ 44.Kh2 Qxh4+ 45.Kg1 Qg5+ 46.Kf1 Qc1+ 47.Kg2 Qg5+ 48.Kf3 Qf5+ 49.Ke3 Qe4+ 50.Kd2 and no more immediate checks. Despite the extra rook, I don't like this position. It's probably a win, but it raises new problems. I'm not sure if there's a way to avoid perpetual without losing the h-pawn, and Black gets a lot of play in these near-perpetuals. The engine evals in this are quite untrustworthy. At one point all lines read 0.00, but if you slide into them the perpetual vanishes (in one case) and the evals return to +2.9 approx. White's alternatives on move 41 aren't very impressive either. Despite the plethora of wins in other lines, this variation still looks dubious to me. I'll catch up on your forum et al in a while.
btw, because of the underscore effect, I was previously unsure whether your username was 'Eyal' or 'Eval' -- it can be hard to see the difference here. Now I know... |

| Dec-22-06 | | twinlark: Hey <Dom>
Do you want to take over? |
|
Dec-22-06
 | | Domdaniel: <twinlark> Like, now? Argh. I hope that request is a piece of all-round nice-guy inclusiveness, and not a cry for help. In a word, no.
But if needs must... |
|
| Dec-22-06 | | twinlark: <Dom>
Relax doc. It's not a cry for help...as a matter of fact the whole thing is pretty much self steering right now with all the line forums established. Truth be told, I'm more than happy to continue forum coordination, especially now that it's such a lark...suits my nature I guess. Reason I ask is that I wasn't sure whether your Friday "let's talk" was on, and whether you had your heart set on übermeistering the set up again. So yes, the request was a piece of all-round nice-guy inclusiveness. In any case, I suspected that you wanted to keep going with analysis, freelance nuisancing, general commentating and maybe even...your RL job and so on and so fifth. Did you get my test message?
Basta |
|
Dec-22-06
 | | Domdaniel: <twinlark> Phew. That's a relief. I'm happy to keep on as things are. As noted in a previous message to Eyal, I accidentally wiped a huge pile of analysis last night and am still trying to rebuild it. I remember all these exquisite mates but not how to reach 'em. Sigh. Story of my life, really.
Haven't checked any of my emails today. I tend to be more inattentive there than here. If that's possible. |

 | | Domdaniel: <Joe, twinlark, mack> Responses from the Resident Idiot are in the ether. You know how these things ask you for a 'security question' like 'grandfather's occupation'. I <idly> wondered what would happen if I entered 'terrorist'? I'd probably have been targeted by a missile by now, so I told the truth instead. |

Nice to hear from you again, Deffi!!! |
|
| Dec-23-06 | | chesstoplay: Hi Dom,
I had an idea... What do you think about posting Arno's Christmas message on the main Kibitzing page? There are many casual CG users/browsers that know about the game, but are not into the forums. GMAN's message is more universal than what is based in each of the forums was what I was thinking. Let me know what you think.
Thanks!
By the way, Merry Christmas and Happy New Year.

| Dec-23-06 | | twinlark: <Dom>
I really have to take the time out to offer my congratulations not only on you making the List of the Most Garrulous Bastards on this Site, but doing it in record time. In the words of an obscure literary/political figure of a past era, "young man, your prowess speaks of a wasted youth." Must be getting close to time to lay waste to Beer, Ale and J Daniel again. I think I'll attempt to survive Xmas first though... |

| Dec-24-06 | | Eyal: <Sometimes I open my main email a/c, see 150 messages, and just leave it for another week.> Just 150? I have currently 3112 unopened messages - can hardly bear to look at it any more. |
|
Dec-24-06
 | | Domdaniel: <chesstoplay> Good idea. Ohio posted it there already, but a repeat or two can't do any harm. I agree that a lot of people probably missed it. <Eyal> 3112 is impressive. Do you collect the things on purpose? In the past, I had to clear out my hotmail account(s) every few days, or they would overload. Mysteriously, 24 hrs after I switched to gmail, the storage went up by a factor of 20. So I kept using it, and got yet more free gigabytes a few weeks later. Strange, huh? <twinlark> From the festive kangaroos spreading across the net, I deduce that your timezone is into Dec 25th already. I just got back from a 1-hour Dec-24th xmas shopping expedition: pic book, kiddy book, chess book, girly book, dictionary, novel, biog, coffee table book, Dawkins again, the new Ballard, und so weiter -- and some wrapping paper, please. Zap, job done. Precise distribution of items may be on a first come, first served basis. Happy Christmas, mother, and, uh, I only have this academic study of Etruscan pornography left. Or perhaps something on poker? Actually she's an ace at poker.
Cheers, all. |
|
| Dec-24-06 | | twinlark: Cheers, Dom. |

| Dec-24-06 | | Nightranger: Merry Christmas, Dom. |

| Dec-25-06 | | certainlynot: Regarding these perpetual checks, 42 . . Qg4+, seems like a better attack for Black, because White has less of a chance of bringing his rook down to block checks. That seems to be the key to stopping the perpetual checks. But, just for the sake of having the line, I think I found the exit for the Qg4+ line, which involves marching the king over to the a4 square, where Black cannot try to attack without losing the a-pawn. 38. ... Qc8
39. Qa7+ Kh6
40. Rf7 Re2
41. h4 Rxg2+
42. Kxg2 Qg4+
43. Kf2 [Kf1 leads to unstoppable checks or worse] Qxh4+
44. Ke2 Qe4+
45. Kd2 Qg2+
46. Kc3 Qg3+
47. Kc2 Qh2+
48. Kb3 Qh3+
49. Ka4
This line may have already been figured out before, but I thought I'd add it to the list. |
|
Dec-25-06
 | | Domdaniel: <certainlynot> Thanks for that. I think between us all we've concluded that White can eventually escape. Eyal and jepflast thought so too. It does raise a question. Some people say "we escape, end of story, so Arno won't even try ...Re2" -- I'm not so confident. The thought of about six weeks playing only-moves to escape perpetual isn't exactly thrilling. What if everyone faded away or got bored? What if there's a line the engines don't see? What if the checks can start up again after a short pause? I'm probably just fretting needlessly. This line is safe enough. But there are other very different lines where we wind up in a rook ending very like the one after 39.b5 -- so it might be best to stick with that after all. I'd hoped to find a real killer punch in the 40.Rf7 line, but now I think it simply ain't there. Not forced, at any rate. No harm in looking for a while longer, though. |

| Dec-26-06 | | Eyal: <where Santa mail gets redirected and supports the local economy> So Santa is probably the one who receives the most mail among non-existent creatures (unless you count God as well). It might be interesting to compile such a list sometime - I suppose Sherlock Holmes is next, with a steady supply of 30-40 letters a month. |
|
| Dec-26-06 | | Eyal: <I can keep an eye on Eyal's forum> Your avatar certainly lends credibility to that statement... |
