your welcome. of course I think only AJ is the sane one in this particular context =] |

 | | Domdaniel: <Theodor> The Chessgames site was down for a few hours on both Sunday and Monday. Totally crashed. Maybe also Tuesday, I lost count. There was an explanation/apology in the Kibitzer Cafe, and I think also the CG Forum. The explanation is the usual geeky computer-ish kind. No need to be alarmed. For some reason, when you posted a link to <flickr> - the popular photography site - I saw it as <flicka>, which is a Swedish word for 'girl' and a common name for young horses. |

| Oct-26-11 | | Alien Math: One solution is to go biological: hence title such as 'The Language Animal', 'The Numbers Animal' and so on. This seems to work ... Also replace with Being The 29,000 games, would make nice Encyclopedia of~ |

 | | Domdaniel: <mworld> Thanks for pointing that out. I don't usually pretend to be sane. A momentary lapse. |

 | | Domdaniel: <Alien M> *Being*, yes, that's possible, though it sounds a bit unhuman, like a ghost or monster. If you said "There's a ... a ... a *being* in the street!" people would not think you meant anything human. Then again, there's the strange American habit of using the word 'American' to mean 'human being' -- "As the Earth plunges into the sun due to gravitational disturbances caused by Lollery, millions of American lives are in danger!" |

| Oct-27-11 | | mworld: a lot has been happening around here. I thought I saw some han(t+p) sockpuppets flying around, but i guess the limbs aren't attached. I'm not so sure I would agree with Aliens on M, I certainly don't feel alien. |

 | | Domdaniel: "Merdre" is not *really* a French word, though it looks and sounds like one. It is spoken by Pa Ubu in Jarry's play 'Ubu Roi'. It's not easily translated. 'Shytr' has been suggested, but I don't think it works. 'Merdre' has the advantage of looking like a verb and sounding like an ejaculation. I craunch the marmosets of googelators. |

| Oct-27-11 | | theodor: Dom, have you seen the devil's eyes and the eye of horus in Flickr? |

Oct-27-11
 | | Domdaniel: <theodor> No, sorry. I never look at Flickr, I run away from people with plastic bags full of old photos, and I generally avoid being photographed myself. I read books about photography instead, and sometimes I go to exhibitions showing the work of interesting photographers. This guy, Miroslav Tichy, impressed me: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Mirosl... Maybe he never existed. Maybe I never existed. Maybe photos have learned how to take themselves, without human intervention. |

| Oct-27-11 | | achieve: <Dom> Fascinating endgame miniature. Currently, the combined Kxh4 plus B covering g6 'antidote' an immediate 1.a6 - but if the WK first moves to the center, preferably <d4>, "zugzwangs" the B if you will, forcing it to abandon one of the diagonals, off the 'V' with base on <d3> or <e4>, then the pawn can be pushed to a7 and it's curtains. If the BK stays on h5 even a move of the WK to <f6> via e5 will seal the deal, as in this position: click for larger view... Black is amazingly, ok this is basic stuff, but nonetheless a very clear example of the classic... <Zugzwang>
I seriously wonder how many of the Young GMs today, would know this pattern, or recognize it when in zeitnot, hehe... No doubt though that they were shown this type configuration during their training somewhere down the line. If not then they play 1 a6 or Kb6 and it's a Draw.
From your starting position withWhite King on d8 instead of c7 even wins... On <c8> however, it loses! Bit of advanced Chess Geometry, quite stunning, actually. |
|
| Oct-27-11 | | achieve: P.S. To really get to the bottom of this position, though, one would have to put the Black B on <d3> in the starting position, and come to understand why *that* position is a draw, while with the Bishop on e4 White to move wins. |

Browsing your forum a bit ... I was glad to see that I was not the only one that noticed the nearly continual "disappearances" (Sat-Tues) of the CG server / webpage ... |

 | | Domdaniel: <Niels> Yes, the ♗ on d3 might be more thematic. It could be reached after 1.Kd6 Bd3 2.Kc5! ... heading for d4, as you say. The key to the win is occupying the centre squares with the White King, which stops the Bishop from easily switching between the two key diagonals. Any attempt to win by heading for b6 or f6 to support a pawn only draws, as the Bishop always gets back. But central occupation plus Zugzwang does the trick. Far from easy, though. |

 | | Domdaniel: <Alien Math> Hope you feel better soon. I had to visit a *Krankenhaus* myself today, but it was just routine. I love that word 'krank' and its derivatives:
Krank = ill, sick, unwell, 'poorly'
Krankenhaus = hospital
Krankenwagen = ambulance. |
|
| Oct-28-11 | | hms123: <Dom> <Niels> Really good discussion and reminder on the K+B vs K+3P. The key principle of cutting off both diagonals is well worth knowing. |
|
| Oct-28-11 | | JoergWalter: <Domdaniel: I love that word 'krank' and its derivatives> how about
"krankfeiern", "Krankengeld", "Krankenschwester"?
But there is no "Krankenbruder". |

 | | Domdaniel: <hms, Niels> The B-ppp ending came from a Fischer-Petrosian game not in the CG database: Johann Fischer (2420) vs Arshak Petrosian (2345), Leipzig 1977. They reached this position after 47 moves:
 click for larger view
It continued 48.g5 Bf1 49.Ke3 Ba6 50.Kd4 Kh5 51.Ke5 Kg6 52.Kd5 Kh5 and was agreed drawn a few moves later. White had the right idea - the centralized King - but couldn't seem to make progress. I tried 48.Kf4 instead, but usually had to play g5 a few moves later anyway, leading to similar positions. Either way, a position like this one can always be reached, I think, and won by White:

 | | Domdaniel: Too many of the people who invented our world have been dying recently. Steve Jobs, obviously, and then Dennis Ritchie, inventor of Unix. And now the last of the first-wave computer scientists, my very distant cousin John McCarthy. Somebody should investigate the pattern. Preferably some silicon somebody, to avoid the mortality trap that meat is heir to. |

 | | Domdaniel: <'Fischer' and 'Petrosian' again ...> After 52 moves in the game, this position was reached:
click for larger viewWhite now played 53.Ke6? It doesn't actually blunder away the win - that comes later - but it misses two better moves. One way to win is 53.Kc6! -- Black has to keep moving the Bishop, as ...Kg6 would deny himself the threat of playing ...Kxh4 at a point where the Bishop can still stop both pawns. And White must be careful to keep his King in touch with the key central squares. 53.Kc6 Bd3 54.Kc5! (Kb6 only draws) Be2 55.Kb6 (now!) Bd3 56.a6 Be4 57.a7 Bf3 58.Kc7 Be4 59.Kb8 etc is the pedestrian route. More amusing is:
53.Kc5 Bd3 (same position as the previous line, but here it is White's move) 54.Kd4 Ba6 55.Kd5 Bd3 56.Kc5 Kxh4 57.Kd4!
 click for larger view
Which way you gonna run?
Back in the game, after 53.Ke6, they played 53 ...Kg6 54.Ke5 Bf1 55.Kd5 Kh5 56.Kc6 Bg2+ 57.Kb6? - this was the last chance for White to win - 57...Be4 58.a6 Kxh4 1/2-1/2 57.Kc5! would have won.
57...Bb7
 click for larger view
A lot of players would automatically play 58.Kb6 here, gaining tempo by chasing the Bishop away ... and pushing the a-pawn ... and ... oops. It's a draw.
The win is 58.Kd6!!
Beautiful stuff. I'm sure the 'real' Fischer would have found the win. But the 'real' Petrosian would have found a safer way to hold the draw. |
