   Jan-06-19 G McCarthy vs M Kennefick, 1977 (replies)

Domdaniel: Maurice Kennefick died over the new year, 2018-2019. RIP. It was many years since I spoke to him. He gave up chess, I reckon, towards the end of the 80s, though even after that he was sometimes lured out for club games. I still regard this game, even after so many years, as the ...

   Jan-06-19 Maurice Kennefick (replies)

Domdaniel: Kennefick died over the 2018-19 New Year. Formerly one of the strongest players in Ireland, he was the first winner of the Mulcahy tournament, held in honour of E.N. Mulcahy, a former Irish champion who died in a plane crash. I played Kennefick just once, and had a freakish win, ...

Domdaniel: <NBZ> -- Thanks, NBZ. Enjoy your chortle. Apropos nothing in particular, did you know that the word 'chortle' was coined by Lewis Carroll, author of 'Alice in Wonderland'? I once edited a magazine called Alice, so I can claim a connection. 'Chortle' requires the jamming ...

Domdaniel: Moral: if you haven't encountered it before, take it seriously. Remember Miles beating Karpov with 1...a6 at Skara. Many so-called 'irregular' openings are quite playable.

   Dec-30-18 Robert Enders vs S H Langer, 1968

Domdaniel: <HMM> - Heh, well, yes. I also remembered that Chuck Berry had a hit with 'My Ding-a-ling' in the 1970s. I'm not sure which is saddest -- that the author of Johnny B. Goode and Memphis Tennessee and Teenage Wedding - among other short masterpieces - should sink to such ...

Feb-23-07  mack: <Joey, Joey

They hadda scrape you
Outta the spaghetti.>

It's said that Desire was the first (and last?) time Dylan used a rhyming dictionary. You would never have been able to tell, would you?

<One day they blew him down in a clam bar in New York

He could see it comin' through the door as he lifted up his fork.

He pushed the table over to protect his family

Then he staggered out into the streets of Little Italy.>

Domdaniel: btw, does anyone know what the start of Black Diamond Bay actually SAYS?

Sounds something like...

"Tapon de Viperanda
She wears a necktie
And a panama hat..."

But I know I've probably got that first bit wrong. A John Cale line - from Guts - fooled me for years by being part-French, part-English. Bit like Canada, rilly.

<An embarrassing denouement, n'est-ce pas, a familiar hyperbole?>

jessicafischerqueen: Thanks <Dom>. I'm gonna pull the trigger on my move now and let chips fall all over the place, if they will.

So this current "chessic Journey" is what is important, not the "end result"? Because the journey keeps my brain from rotting and helps keep the rest of my material body in penury?

Good enough for me.

Onwards and slightly sideways- a lateral attack on his Queenside, now. I'm tired of analyzing I'm going blind.

Oh that this <not actually solid> flesh would <flesh can't melt, it burns>...

jessicafischerqueen: No, <Dom> the first line is:

Domdaniel: Barracudas? Wow. Jinx. Cale, again: <barracuda, barracuda, won't you lay down your life for me?>

What a question to ask a fish.

Domdaniel: I think my Guts link got vanished, snarked, nuked, sucked away by the machine.

If I'd had the wit I'd just have provided a link to the Cale website as a whole, rather than the page with the relevant lyrics. So it goes.

jessicafischerqueen: If <Dom> had been the editor:

<Dialectic of the Enfrightenment> by T.A. and M.H.

reification? what reification?

(walks about like "drugged ant")

Feb-24-07  Eyal: <Reality is a crutch for those who can't handle drugs> attributed to Lily Tomlin (http://en.wikiquote.org/wiki/Drugs)

I thought the use of "escape" and "hallucinogens" makes the paradox a bit more pointed - and I have to admit the first time I came across this observation was in one of <Steppenwolf>'s posts during the Nickel game... (in contrast to <sharpnova>, the said troll did demonstrate a sense of humor occasionally)

Domdaniel: <Eyal> There was a difference, certainly. Mebbe we should characterize <trollery> as a behavior -- hey, we all have an Inner Troll -- rather than <trollness> or even <trolldom> as a state of being...

... and my Inner Troll feels like singing ...

Just Like Dom Dumb's Blues

If you see Saint Nimzo
Please tell him, thanks a lot
I cannot move, my pieces are all in a knot
I don't have the strength to get up and take another shot And even Dr Tarrasch don't know what is that I've got.

I started out on Benoni
But soon I hit the harder stuff
Everybody said they'd stand behind me when the game got rough

But the d-pawn fell and it wasn't even a bluff
I'm going back to the Orthodox
I do believe I've had enough.

Feb-24-07  mack: Here's a 'fun' puzzle that came out of one of my games recently (I was white). It was one of those bloody infuriating games where I was completely demolishing my opponent and he just wouldn't resign. In the following position, he played ...Rxe4. I rather angrily recaptured, thinking that he was just taking the piss. Then, to my horror, I realised the point: ...Re1+ with stalemate nastiness looming. ...Re1+ was promptly played. What happened next, kids?

Feb-24-07  laskereshevsky: sorry friend <mack:>, i think U intend Rb1+, and not Re1+....

in any case after Kh2, Rh1+, KxH1 (forced) is stale.....

but after...Rb1+, Qe1!, Rxe1+, Kh2 no stale mate at all, and the White can win the final....

Domdaniel: <mack> He *was* taking the piss, but you couldn't see the e-pawn hiding behind the Rook?

So, 1 ... Rxe4
2. Qxe4 is played? And he goes, shazam, 2...Rb1+. And you play 3.Qxb1 and he rather sheepishly moves the e-pawn and then you mate him.

In the absence of a black e-pawn, I guess you'd have to play something like 2. Qxe4 Rb1+
3. Qe1 Rxe1+
4.Kh2 and White grumpily wins, unsure if it's a brilliancy or a near miss...

I'm now drafting a suitable (and possibly verbose) email for you...

Right on all accounts. Dunno where Re1 came from. It was a right pain in the arse though, having to play out the RPPP vs RP endgame.

<Dom> Where you getting Qxb1 from?

Feb-24-07  laskereshevsky: <dom> is right...after Q(e4)xb1 the black can move the E pawn.....Maybe U <mack> intend this position but without the E pawn?!....
Feb-24-07  mack: Oh dear, what a mess. No, the e-pawn was there, but the Rb8 should be on a8.
Feb-24-07

Domdaniel: Aha, that changes things. I still can't see how you reach a stalemate with that e-pawn on, though.

Never mind. Brilliantly sacrificing your Queen in order to demonstrate your mastery at rook endings puts iron in the soul.

jessicafischerqueen: Ah, ok ok, no good morning for me until I finish writing your email!!

And another chess game with a mistake on the board! Makes for very interesting reading/analysis, I see...

Well done, well done, can't be bad...

Domdaniel: <Jess> No worries, no hurries. As the famous <Chinese Encyclopedia of Priorities> says: Concentrate on (a) playing elixir, (b) other games in progress, (c) other stuff, (d) those painted with a fine camel's hairbrush, (e) schoolwork, (f) those that resemble flies at a distance ...

Uh, I'm probably in that last category. No rush.

jessicafischerqueen: <Chinese>? They're three deep, man! (source: <MPFC>)

Priorities:

1. Finishing email to <Dom> (in progress)

2. Spamming <Dom's> forum

3. Playing Elixir <HA!> my calculations on 13.Nb5 proved correct-- he has blundered and I have won a pawn-- I think...

4. Alchemist game (I caused a scandal by complaining that <rocafella> was not contributing so he resigned--bows head in shame)

5. School work: From <At Swim Two Birds>: Estimated weekly time spent doing schoolwork-- 1.5 hours (my favorite paragraph in the novel).

BTW, <WannaBe> found my new avatar, and I have no idea who it is, but he will know. I think it might be <Britney Spears>? Or <Albert Speer>?

Back to the email...

Domdaniel: <Jeffica> Is that *really* your <really face> or did the palace make-up squad fail to arrive for work this morning and you had to throw a little something together on your own?

Off with their heads.

Hmph. These young folk, always 'experimenting' with a new 'image'. It'll be those *deadlock* things next, mark my words...
