I live in South Florida USA. Rated USCF ~1800

A long time ago I was a new player in a Miami chess park, and one of the stronger players thought I had real talent, so he suggested that I play the park champ, a Cuban master. After the master destroyed me in a few blitz games, the question was posed, "Is he any good?" The answer I took as a great compliment: "Ehh... he tries to be sneaky."

The greatest chess player of all time is Robert James Fischer. The greatest chess problemist of all time is Sam Loyd. The greatest chess site of all time is chessgames.com!

Other players who I admire:

<Morphy> Possibly the greatest natural chess talent ever. Like Steinitz who followed, he taught the world how the game should really be played. <Najdorf> He was smart enough to make his money outside of chess, so he played for the pure joy of it. <Tal> Proved that even in the modern era, chess is an art more than a science. <Blackburne> Sacrificed his queen more times than I've had hot meals. <Diemer> One of the most original thinkers the game ever has known. His ideas were not always right, but they were HIS ideas. <Topalov> He hates draws so much he'll gladly risk losing to avoid one. I can forgive him for the Elista debacle; his chess is payment enough. <Lembit Oll> When on the attack, Lembit Oll said "Dambit All!" <Kasparov> Strive for perfection, one move at a time. <Alekhine> Swashbuckling play culminating in booming sacrifices.

And countless others: Nezhmetdinov, Shirov, Nunn, Shabalov, Nakamura, basically, anybody with cojones.

Addendum 2015: <Magnus Carlsen> has to be on the list. He's a modern day Casablanca. The way he squeezes wins out of the tiniest advantages and grinds his opponents down through sheer stamina is right up there with Robert James.

You can find me on FICS (freechess.org) ... and lately, on ICC as well. I'll gladly play anybody within 1000 points of my rating. I also really like the site http://www.lichess.org but so far have only played anonymously.

Dec-23-06  YouRang: Hi <Sneaky>

<However, I still don't see the 2700-rule as a provision which sells the title to the highest bidder>

Actually, instead of using the term "sell", I said it puts it "up for grabs". The idea is that the highest bidding 2700+ player can buy a shot at the title. Of course, in a match the better player usually wins, but it's not guaranteed. If the lesser player wins, the chess world will have a very unsatifying 'champion', who got there largely by virtue of funding rather than by consistent demonstration of skill. This is bad for chess.

<all it does is force the champion to defend his title.>

But the 2700+ rule is unnecessary for this. If the WC elimination cycle is set up properly, it forces the champion to defend his title. It also forces the title to be worth something for a fixed and reasonable time period. More importantly, it ensures that the new champion will emerge fairly and convincingly based on OTB play.

Anyhow, I went on the net and listened to several versions of Silent Night so that I could bring my chessgames friends the crème de la crème! This one was my favorite.

Dec-31-06  ahmadov: <Sneaky> I was checking your solutions to the puzzle I posted on page 2534 of Kibitzers' Cafe and I found that even Rc3 is not the right move. Because Rc3 is met with very strong ...Rc1, which takes the position to mate in 4 not 3.

Hope you will find this move interesting and sneaky ;)

Sneaky: Hey, I answered you at the k-cafe. I thought for sure you cooked the solution but my chess computer showed me the light! After ...Rc1(!) white has Rc2!! to keep the mate alive.

By the way, do you know what (!) means when you put it in parentheses like that? It means "a good move in a hopeless position." In other words, it's a SNEAKY move that might salvage an otherwise lost game. I've always liked that.

Jan-01-07  ahmadov: Yeap, quite right. I should have seen that before posting the previous message. Also, thank you very much for the information about (!). I did not know that before. It must be a useful sign when annotating games.
Jan-08-07  Silverstrike: Hey Sneaky, would you be willing to play a correspondence game with me on your chess forum? You'll probably tear me to bits, as I havn't played seriously in about 7-8 months, but if you're willing then let me know. And if you don't want to, then that's fine. :)

Sneaky: <Silverstrike> OK, you're on! Let's discuss the terms. Here are some suggestions:

<Time Control> - Very casual. Maybe 10 moves in one day, maybe 1 move in 10 days, whatever we have time for. No pressure, no time forfeits.

<Computers> - Prohibited for position analysis (but it's OK to use opening databases etc.) I am also willing to play with computer assistance but in that case you'll probably have an advantage assuming you have a decent chess engine. (Mine is somewhere in between a Little Chess Partner and a turnip.)

<White/Black> - We can flip a coin for color as follows: if tomorrows Puzzle of the Day on the homepage is an even numbered move (e.g., 18...?) then I get White, if it's odd then I get Black. (If you don't respond to this before midnight then the deal's off--we'll have to do it again the next day. Also if you want evens that's fine as well, just say so and I will be rooting for the odd numbers.)

<Making Moves> Just post your move here, from time to time I will repost the current game position. I will also do some cleanup eventually to consolidate our many tiny posts with larger posts.

<If moves> Are allowed, and encouraged, e.g. I might say "1.d4 and if ...d5 or ...Nf6 then I play 2.c4" That is supposed to help speed the game along. But you never have to use them.

Jan-08-07  Silverstrike: <Sneaky> Fantastic! All your terms seem great, and you can have the even numbers if you like. I'd prefer no computer assistance, if that's okay with you, but opening databases, books and the like im cool with. Thanks alot for accepting! :) And Good Luck! :)

Sneaky: OK we're all set. First move will happen tomorrow. I'll be around here after midnight if you're around.
Jan-08-07  Silverstrike: Erm, I live in the UK so times will be different for us both. But I hope and expect that will not be a dominant factor.

Sneaky: No problem. When I say "midnight" I mean New York time, so that must be about 5:00am for you.

Sneaky: Yay! I win the coin flip! (Krogius vs Jansa, 1961 34.?) Of course I take the white pieces.

Here's my first move:

1.d4

and if ...c6, ...d6, ...e6, ...Nf6, or ...d5 then I play 2.c4

Good luck to you.

Jan-09-07  Silverstrike: I'll play 1...d5, and best of luck.
Jan-09-07  Silverstrike: An as you said, you'll play 2.c4, so I'll take a risk and go for 2...e5.

Sneaky: Oh boy, an Albin! I spent a lot of time playing with this opening a few years ago. I have a number of comments on this page Queen's Gambit Declined, Albin Counter Gambit (D08).

Anyhow, here we go: I play 3. dxe5

if you respond ...d4 then 4. Nf3
and furthermore if 4...Nc6 then 5.g3

Jan-09-07  Silverstrike: <Sneaky> Yep, should be fun! Okay then, 3...d4 4.Nf3 Nc6 5.g3 Bf5

Sneaky: 5...Bf5 is a good choice.

I'll stick with the mainline, 6.Bg2
