I live in South Florida USA. Rated USCF ~1800

A long time ago I was a new player in a Miami chess park, and one of the stronger players thought I had real talent, so he suggested that I play the park champ, a Cuban master. After the master destroyed me in a few blitz games, the question was posed, "Is he any good?" The answer I took as a great compliment: "Ehh... he tries to be sneaky."

The greatest chess player of all time is Robert James Fischer. The greatest chess problemist of all time is Sam Loyd. The greatest chess site of all time is chessgames.com!

Other players who I admire:

<Morphy> Possibly the greatest natural chess talent ever. Like Steinitz who followed, he taught the world how the game should really be played. <Najdorf> He was smart enough to make his money outside of chess, so he played for the pure joy of it. <Tal> Proved that even in the modern era, chess is an art more than a science. <Blackburne> Sacrificed his queen more times than I've had hot meals. <Diemer> One of the most original thinkers the game ever has known. His ideas were not always right, but they were HIS ideas. <Topalov> He hates draws so much he'll gladly risk losing to avoid one. I can forgive him for the Elista debacle; his chess is payment enough. <Lembit Oll> When on the attack, Lembit Oll said "Dambit All!" <Kasparov> Strive for perfection, one move at a time. <Alekhine> Swashbuckling play culminating in booming sacrifices.

And countless others: Nezhmetdinov, Shirov, Nunn, Shabalov, Nakamura, basically, anybody with cojones.

Addendum 2015: <Magnus Carlsen> has to be on the list. He's a modern day Casablanca. The way he squeezes wins out of the tiniest advantages and grinds his opponents down through sheer stamina is right up there with Robert James.

You can find me on FICS (freechess.org) ... and lately, on ICC as well. I'll gladly play anybody within 1000 points of my rating. I also really like the site http://www.lichess.org but so far have only played anonymously.

I just posted some chessmetrics statistics in my forum that you may find interesting.

Feb-05-07  positionalgenius: <sneaky>A few CG.com members are meeting at WEASEL WAY tonight at 9 PM Us central time. If you want to come that would be great. We will be playing 5/0 blitz games.

Sneaky: positionalgenius -- I can't make promises but I will definitely try to be there!
Feb-07-07  micartouse: Sneaky, that's a cool problem. It reminds me of that "Pick a number" problem where you do all sorts of basic arithmetic and in the end it unwinds itself. Only here, I felt like I was being hypnotized going around the Q.

The way I've been calculating in chess lately, I'm surprised I didn't end up on one of the other pieces!

Think of a number between 1 and 25.

Now double it.

Add eight.

Divide that answer by two.

Now take away the number you first thought of.

Now figure out what letter of the alphabet corresponds to that number (e.g. A=1, B=2, C=3, D=4, E=5, etc.)

Now think of a country that starts with that letter.

Now take the second the letter of that country's name.

Now think of an animal that starts with that letter.

Now think of the color that this animal might be.

OK, you got it? You're thinking of a country and an animal and this animal is a certain color. Now concentrate on it very hard. Keep concentrating as you scroll down very slowly.

.

.

.

.

.

Wait ... wait... it's coming to me ... I'm having a vision.

.

.

.

I'm starting to see it ... it's a very beautiful animal isn't it...

.

.

.

.

A very large, beautiful, majestic animal...

.

.

.

.

.

.

But look here, there are NO grey elephants in Denmark!!!

Sneaky: Archives -- sounds like fun, but I'm short on time. Maybe later in the month but I can't do it this week.
Feb-10-07  hitman84: <Archives>Would you like to join the consultation game as a replacement for <Richard Taylor> on <Team White> ?

Sneaky: Sorry I can't do anything this week at all, other than a blitz game or two. Try me again near the end of the month.
Feb-14-07  shr0pshire: <sneaky> I read through a bit of your team's posts tonight about the consultation game and it was depressing to hear how your team kept saying our play was basically suicide. Ouch.

Oh well, I had fun with the game, and I hope you did too.

And now I don't feel guilty about talking to you. It isn't like we are sworn enemies anymore. ;)

Oops sorry only just saw this now. Fiddlesticks!

Sneaky: shr0pshire, I still think that 1...a6 is basically suicide in correpondence chess. If it wasn't, you'd see it played at the higher eschelons of correspondence chess, but we don't.

The only problem for Team White was, we weren't up to the task! We just let Rybka send us into the land of hazy-grey equality. I actually pointed to a correspondence game at one stage that one might call "The Batik Attack" that I think might contain the kernel of the "bust" to the entire opening system--but I didn't make a big fuss about it. Maybe I should have.

You guys played well and WE were the ones lucky to get a draw.

Sneaky: shr0pshire -- or you mean your play throughout the entire game? Well that was just good healthy contempt for our opponents. At one point you guys were well ahead of us, because you must have had this plan to castle long when we where thinking "Naw, that would never work" and kept wondering why you guys weren't making the necessary preparations for kingside castle. Then it hit us like a ton of bricks -- of COURSE they can castle long, why not? It's safe on that side!

Mar-02-07  Knight13: <Sneaky: <knight13> Let me guess, you got a "Word-a-Day" calendar last Christmas just like I did, right?> Uh, actually, I made over 500 flashcards and I'm learning words from those. :) And I got hundreds more coming. Got box full of them and I need to memorize all of those words for the up-coming you-know-what. :)

Mar-11-07  Billy Ray Valentine: Sneaky, I ran across another game for your underpromotion collection:

Aranov vs Karpov, 1962

Mar-11-07
Premium Chessgames Member
Sneaky: Thanks Billie Ray, that one is great. Sometimes people point out underpromotion games which don't really add much to the collection, but this one illustrates a special case: when you can't promote a queen, a rook, or a bishop because you'd lose it to a knight fork. But the one piece that a knight can never fork is another knight!
Mar-11-07  Billy Ray Valentine: Agree, Sneaky. It is very similar to one of the other games in your collection: Ziatdinov vs V Mikhalevski, 2005

Except in this case, the underpromotion allows the player to win instead of draw...

Sneaky: I remember seeing a composition a long time ago where White has a pawn and two knights, and Black had a knight. White has to keep pushing the pawn, and the Black knight keeps attacking it, all the way down the board until it finally promotes. But the trick to the problem was that if you take a queen you'd lose your new piece to a fork. So the surprise solution is that you underpromote to a knight, and believe it or not, ♘♘♘v♘ endings are generally won for the three knights. The defending side just can't survive the stampede of hooves!
Mar-17-07  Billy Ray Valentine: Very interesting-- 3 knights v 1 knight. I'm sure it's quite rare. Unfortunately Endgame Explorer doesn't allow a user to look up that particular setup.
