 | | Sneaky: Thanks Benzol, but it was really nothing. Just a job, and I got paid for it. I never talked about it in fear that people might treat me (undeservingly) like royalty around here. |

 | | Richard Taylor: <Sneaky> Well I never, er...Your Highness...I take everything and everything nasty or dubious or contentious or disrespectful I may or may not have said or been rumoured or perceived to have said against you! I deeply and humbly wish to apologize for everything. Now about that little matter of the do re mi being sent my way... 13 Years? Good one! I've been here a bit. Benzol was before me. I was looking for a chess opening data base at the time... |

 | | Penguincw: < Jun-04-14 Sneaky: It's a bit premature to pop open the bubbly, but next March will be the "Pi Day" of the millennium. If you wait until a little bit after 9:26:53 in the morning, the time will be: 3-14-15 9:26:53
Make your party plans now, this will be the blow-out blast for math nerds everywhere. > Happy Pi Day Sneaky! Unfortunately, I'm about 10 minutes late after the desired time, but oh well. :) Sneaky chessforum (kibitz #1418) |

 | | Diocletian: Hi, Sneaky
Underpromotions fascinate. Here at 9:10
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Kum...
is reference to an underpromotion composition in which both players underpromote to the same piece. The composer's name is blurred and not quite legible, something like Leonid Varxxx. I have searched like crazy everywhere with no luck. I know you like underpromotions too; maybe you have more info.
thanks for your collection. |

 | | Sneaky: See "Babson Task" (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Babson...) — the proposal of a composition such that Black has four main defenses: a pawn promoting to a queen, rook, knight, or bishop. And for each of those defenses, the only winning move is for white to promote a pawn of his own, queen for queen, rook for rook, knight for knight, bishop for bishop. As the wikipedia article says, <it is difficult to justify White promoting to a knight because of Black promoting to one way over the other side of the board.> Now THAT is an understatement. And yet, like Fermat's Last Theorem, the purists will struggle until they either chance upon the holy grail or die trying. The first solution that didn't have an abhorrent flaw was Leonid Yarosh, "Shakhmaty SSSR, August 1983". (His previous attempt worked, but it had the unfortunate flaw that the key move was a capture, which is greatly frowned upon.) Here it is, in all its glory, surely the most remarkable composition of the 20th century, in fact it's been dubbed the "problem of the millennium". White to play and mate in four: click for larger viewKey move 1.a7!!
if 1...axb1=Q then the only winning move is 2.axb8=Q
if 1...axb1=B then the only winning move is 2.axb8=B
if 1...axb1=N then the only winning move is 2.axb8=N
if 1...axb1=R then the only winning move is 2.axb8=R
The details left as an exercise to the reader ;-) |

 | | Sneaky: Thanks—I'm always in contention but I can't remember the last time I actually won something. |
|
Apr-17-15 | | MarkFinan: Not sure about your wagers today Sneaky, but if I hadn't put stupid amounts on the once great British hope, Nige Short, I'd be ahead of you as the table stands. I made up for Short not winning, but not much. |
|
Apr-18-15 | | MarkFinan: I'm on your heals, Sneaky. I'm aiming for top 1 this leg, and only then will I decide if I have the professional gambling gene, lol. Nearly all my bets have paid off today. 🙋 |
