Jan-03-14  MostlyAverageJoe: <Annie K.: Whether you are "nominating" or "seconding", you only have 3 choices. <NOT> 3 for each>

Misleading mix of nominating/seconding.

<Jessicafischerqueen: Combination of nomination and seconding must be maximum of 3 per category>

???????????????????????????????

There is no combined maximum.

Reference: the rules in the forum header; the are perfectly clear:

<♘ NOMINATION RULES ♘

From January 2-8 we receive nominations for all categories. You may not nominate more than <<<<3 users (games, etc.) for any single category>>>>.

All nominations must be "seconded" by at least one other member to qualify for voting. You may second <<<<any number of nominations>>>>.>

Annie K.: Yeah, clarification is needed - I've raised the alarm over at t'other forum. :)
Jan-03-14  MostlyAverageJoe: <jessicafischerqueen: Here would be a clearer version:

"You may only nominate 3 different people per category. A member must receive at least 2 nominations in a given category in order to advance to the voting round in that category.">

That would be a <<<different>>> version.

According to the current rules:

I can nominate 3 best avatars.

I could second 15 of them, if I wanted (not that I do, there is only one avatar that is IMO of the same superior quality as the three nominated ones, and I am not allowed to nominate/second it :-)

offramp: I am nominating <User: MarkFinan> as best User Profile.

I was going to do this on 2nd January but when I went to the page to get the link I was surprised to find that EVERYTHING had gone and been replaced in Winston Smith fashion with a Hugh Laurie episode of Blackadder II. I was actually voting for the old slightly curmudgeonly and eccentric profile that was there for almost the entirety of 2013. But it is still a good profile; and I am sure the old eclecticism will return in stages throughout 2014.

Most helpful kibitzer: <FSR>. We go for the puns but stay for the analysis and pithy comments.

jessicafischerqueen: <MAJ> has read the posted rules on this topic to mean the same thing I thought they meant, and <Annie> has read them to mean something different.

I won't vouch for myself, but I know for a fact neither <MAJ> nor <Annie> is thick.

Therefore, I submit that the rules are not well-written on this point, and should be made clearer.

Are you eyeing at winning category 15?

  chancho: I nominate the following:

Best Avatar <AnnieK> Most Helpful <tpstar> Funniest Poster <technical draw> Best historian <Jessicafischerqueen>

Jan-03-14
Premium Chessgames Member
  jessicafischerqueen: <MAJ>

Here is a point of confusion- <chancho> has just nominated <technical draw> for Funniest Poster.

I had already nominated him in this category.

So is he in to the final voting round?

I say he is, according to the posted rules.

But a really strict reading of the posted rules might say <technical draw> was "nominated" twice rather than "nominated" and then "seconded."

This is an instance in which a second "nomination" would count as a "seconding" - which is what <Annie> thought.

Again, I submit the rules need clarifying.

And since I'm here I will "second" the "nomination" of <Perfidious> for best avatar.

offramp: Player of the year: <Boris Gelfand>. He has grown stronger and harder to beat since the Anand match - in fact even HE might have beaten Anand in Chennai. Very good results "late in his career"[?]

offramp: This took a lot of finding!! Predictably my favourite post is a very short one.

Best Post <Anand-Carlsen World Championship (2013)>

<Sep-07-13 Wyatt Gwyon: Anand won't win a single game. Book it.>

This was a couple of months before the match... and I said to myself that this was totally ridiculous. (But I am an old enough head that I said nothing in print).

(To my slight credit, this post appeared after the match: <offramp: <Sep-07-13 Wyatt Gwyon: Anand won't win a single game. Book it.> When I read that, 2 and a half months ago (on page 40), I mentally ridiculed it. I genuinely thought Anand would win one game, though probably not two.

Good prediction, Wyatt!>.)

  jessicafischerqueen: <MAJ>

<Actually, I retract.>

LOL! That sounds like me.

Well good job by both you and <Annie> to post a request for clarification on the MAIN NOT SO SECRET admin forum.

No doubt our <Grand Piano> will make a clear ruling on this ambiguity.

Jan-03-14  MostlyAverageJoe: <jessicafischerqueen: ... I'd like to rescind my seconding of <Karpova> for BEST HISTORIAN, because <Mark Finan> has just nominated/seconded her>

While duplicate seconding is not needed, it does not need to be rescinded, either, since you're allowed unlimited number of seconds.

Furthermore, it seems to me that you seconded Karpova for best post, not for best historian: The Caissars chessforum

Searching for "karpova user:jessicafischerqueen" shows no other nominations/seconding karpova for best historian in your posts.

Searching for "historian user:jessicafischerqueen" shows exactly 3 nominations, so I am not sure why <Annie K.> counted four.

Now I have a headache...

Jan-03-14

jessicafischerqueen: <MAJ> yes you are correct, I "seconded" <Karpova> for Best Post, not Best Historian. I didn't remember this at the time I read <Annie's> post.

<Annie> has taken on what looks to be a formidable task of updating this year, due to at least two factors:

1. There are new rules and it seems not many have actually bothered to read them.

2. There is a significant ambiguity in the "nomination" "seconding" distinction.

If I were <Annie> I think I would have a headache...

Annie K.: <Jess> Heh. Ackshly, I was counting your later seconding of <suenteus po 147> as #4. I'm not tallying the latest posts yet, so when you said you nominated Karpova as well, I just accepted it for the time being, and said that would make 5. :)

PS - in re: headache - I have taken to drink. I am now on my third coffee. ;p

offramp: Although he is too ululatory for my liking, there is no doubt for me that <notyetagm> is elucidatory and provides useful diagrams for crucial moments; he doesn't miss much, either.

So <notyetagm> is my nomination for <Most Constructive>.

Jan-03-14  MarkFinan: <<john barleycorn: <MarkFinan: ... Well firstly I'd like to thank <john barleycorn> for this award. He's one of the finest human minds our race has ever known. Secondly,g me in everything I do..>

I'm guessing category 15's a <black eye> because I seemed to have caused my friend some unintentional offence, haha. Calm down mate, I don't think you got the "parodyesqueness" (Best word invention? 😆) of my post, lol. I did say earlier in SEVERAL!!! forum that I've been slacking lately in that department, so my deepest ap-oll-ojizz ;)

<offramp> Thanks, because I know that nom was sincere as I really have just changed my profile! You noticed? And more importantly, you recognize it was blackadder II,(he's my fictional hero, I love his wit, lol)And I just wanna say that means more than 25 Awards from a load of cronies who vote for each other *just because* the other person nominated them. And that's been my point if anyone reads back a page or two!

Some of the nominations for funniest are?!?###?!??? It's CRONYISM!!!!!! I think id better shut up and leave right now, lol!

But how is <OCF> "funny???". Show me one post? One? Just one? #ridiculous!

Okay im gone 😉

Jan-03-14  john barleycorn: <MarkFinan: But how is <OCF> "funny???". Show me one post? One? Just one? #ridiculous!>

It is the one I nominated under "Best Post".

Jan-03-14  hms123: Second

6. Most Constructive

  The Caissars: Folks:

Sorry if the new rules are expressed vaguely. Perhaps a few clarifications are in order:

• If two people nominate the same member, the extra nomination will be interpreted as the 'seconding' of the first nomination.

• We placed the restriction of "three nominations per category" to force people to make decisions and pick the very best for nomination. That means that each of you can nominate as many as 42 members (games, puns, etc.) across all categories because 14x3 = 42.

• However, "seconding" is unlimited: we felt that we would get caught up in red tape if we had to keep track of how many times something is seconded. Of course, if a member is seconded more than once it is superfluous.

For these reasons, JFQ's decision to 'rescind a nomination' makes sense, since she nominated a member who had already been nominated, which means in a way she really only nominated two and seconded the third. I'm not sure how many people are eager to make the full three nominations in each category; perhaps this circumstance won't be terribly important.

If there is still something unclear please ask.

Jan-03-14  hms123: Also, second

10. Most Informed
<kwid>

11. Best Historian
<cro777>

Jan-03-14  MarkFinan: Oh yeah, the whale one, lol. Well okay I'll give you that, but shouldn't that come under best post and not funniest kibitzer like someone here nominated him for? Yeah, it was a good post but he's hardly funny and that's one of the mildest examples of (I'm getting sick of this word now.. )... Cronyism? He's a long standing member, the "old guard", the elite as Thefocus once described them. And that's my gripe. But no one listens to me anyway haha.

Jan-03-14  john barleycorn: <Mark> OCF is under best post. I nominated AJ as funniest. Am I on your Iggy list?????
