Mar-04-06  you vs yourself: <TheAlchemist> After 14..Rxc4, have you considered 15.Qe2 attacking the rook and preparing for g4?

  TheAlchemist: <you vs yourself> I did see it, but I didn't like 15...Rxc3.
Mar-04-06  Cogano: No problemo <El Alquemista>. Don't mention it. Take very good care yourself & have a great day. Cheers mate! :)

<<

13.Rdg1 ?! >

After h5 you cannot continue with the usual g4 plan.

Maybe you could have gone for g4 instead of h4.

The best way to continue is 13.Bg5
The idea is if Nc4 then Bc4 Rc4 and then you may play Rg1 now g4 is unstoppable idea Bf6 g4.
>

<<<

15.Kb1 >

well it seems you have already got your mind fixed on the move g4 this plan is surely gonna fail if you play it against a better player.

anyways,

here is an interesting variation....

15.g4 hg4 16.h5 gh5 17.Qd3 Qc8!<I fell the only move ie if black wants retain its advantage>18.fg4 Bg4 19.Nf5 Bf5 20.ef5 Rg4 21.Bd4 Re8 >

Its a very complicated variation. >

<<

18...Qc8 ? >

18...Bf3

too bad you overlooked this move after all the whole purpose of g4 was to play h5 :( >

25.h5 Re5 26.h6+ Kh7 27.Nd4 Qf6 >

<<<

27.Rh4 ? >

You thought anyway the R gets exchanged but I guess you missed this variation..>

27.Rc1! Rh1 28.Qc7 Rc1+ 29.Nc1 Qe8 30.Qb7 >

<<<

33.Nd6 ? >

This position is almost impossible for black to win

33.Qc8+ Kf7 34.Nd8+ Kg6 35.Qa6 Qe1+ Ka2 upto this all moves were more or less forced

This position is worth a study! >

Tough luck mate but dont let that deter you after all we are all humans as MR. <Cog<amigo>no> says :) >

TheAlchemist: Thanks, <hitman84>! After a more objective look, I realize I was too reckless in sacrificing Pawns. I was aware that it probably wasn't all sound, but at least I enjoyed it while it lasted :-). In the past I was often afraid and played very passively against higher rated opponents and lost without any real fight. At least I have now convinced myself into taking risks, even such crazy ones. The result is the same, but as I said, at least this way I get to enjoy the game for a while.
Mar-05-06  hitman84: <TheAlchemist>No probs mate just enjoy the game the way you do. :)

TheAlchemist: <hitman> Hello! No, today I'm playing in round 3, so far I've managed to lose both games. It seems I'm really rusty as far as OTB chess is concerned. In internet correspondence, there's at least the trial and error option :-)

TheAlchemist: This is my game from yesterday, finally I managed to break the ice, albeit with just a draw. I was Black.

1.e4 c5 2.Nf3 Nc6 3.d4 cxd4 4.Nxd4 Nf6 5.Nc3 e5 6.Nb3 Bb4 7.Bd3 d5 8.exd5 Nxd5 9.Bd2 Bxc3 10.bxc3 O-O 11.O-O f5 12.Bc4 Kh8 13.Bxd5

(<13.Bg5!?>)

13...Qxd5 14.Qe2 f4

(<maybe 14...Be6>)

15.f3 Bf5 16.c4 Qf7 17.Bc3 Rae8 18.Nc5 Nd4 19.Bxd4 exd4 20.Ne4 Qg6 21.Rae1 h5

(<I felt that I was slightly better here, at least I felt my play was better than in the first two rounds. But I still couldn't find a clear plan. So, I decided to march with my h-pawn, solving my back rank problems and threatening h5-h4-h3>)

22.Kh1 Re6 23.Qd3 Rfe8

(<I decided to go into a Q+R ending, where I'd try to attack the White King somehow. We were both in time trouble, we had about 20 minutes for 17 moves>)

24.Qxd4 Bxe4 25.fxe4 Rxe4 26.Rxe4 Rxe4 27.Qxa7

(<Here I took a risk and used about 10 minutes of my remaining time, trying to evaluate the consequences of my next move. I also looked at 27...Qc6, but didn't see aything concrete. I saw 28.c5 Re2 29.Rg1 f3 30.Qb8+ Kh7 31.Qg3, also 28.Qa5 seemed annoying, especially after 28...g6 29.Rd1 my King is chased around.>)

27...f3!? 28.Qf2

(<A wise choice by my opponent, I think, 28.gxf3 was perhaps too risky for time pressure. I was left with little choice but...>)

28...fxg2 29.Qxg2 Qxg2 30.Kxg2 Rxc4 1/2-1/2

(<And here I offered a draw, which my opponent accepted. In a way, I didn't think I could win it, plus I was afraid of losing my third game in a row, which would be terrible. My fourth round opponent is beatable, so I'm optimistic for next Saturday. Because of all the chaos in the beginning, with players joining a little late, I will again be Black, as I was White in my first two games. Keep your fingers crossed for me next Saturday at 5PM CET :-)>)

Mar-20-06  hitman84: <TheAlchemist>hi mate nice to know you did'nt go for the dreaded 0-0-0 :)

  TheAlchemist: !HELP!

Hello, if anyone gets this message, I need some help with appropriate puns for the following games:

G West vs Desperado, 1994

A Khruschiov vs A Voinov, 2001

Take your best shots. Thanks in advance!

Mar-23-06  Cogano: Hi again <TheAlchemist> & I sincerely hope this finds you well. As for the G West vs Desperado, 1994 game, how does "How The West Has Won" sound to you? It's supposed to be a play on the title of a famous movie "How The West Was Won"!

As for the A Khruschiov vs A Voinov, 2001 game, the best I could come up with is this: "A Queen Torn: The Heir To The Throne or The Lion in Winter?"

I hope these will at least help you get started. I'll see you around my friend. Take very good care & have a great day.
Cheers mate! :)

Mar-24-06  notsodeepthought: <TheAlchemist> For G West vs Desperado, 1994 you are bound to get quite a few - I'll just throw in "Guy West, young man, Guy West" and let others contribute their (probably better) lines.

A Khruschiov vs A Voinov, 2001 is tough... Assuming most kibitzers are old enough to spot the "Kruschiov" connection, I would suggest "Shoe-in" - if you are willing to ignore that the game actually went over 100 moves (hardly an easy win for white). Or perhaps "We will bury you" along the same historical theme. Or, best yet, I may just pass on this one...

TheAlchemist: <Cogano, notsodeepthought> Thanks for your suggestions!

For G West vs Desperado, 1994 I was actually looking more for something with "Desperado".

My best attempt for A Khruschiov vs A Voinov, 2001 was "Cold war", since "vojna" (pronounced the same as "voina" probably) is Russian for "war", if I'm not mistaken. I like <nsdt>'s suggestion of "We will bury you", although I might change the "we" into "I".

But I'll wait if someone else will give their suggestions.
