Viewer Deluxe: So far so (not) good, <Woody>

You seem ready to do some real troubleshooting.
I’m not sure how far you’d like to go so feel free to take any part (or all) of my suggestions.

There were many tips posted already on this (current) forum before, eg this post; Viewer Deluxe chessforum The Java console is a tool that let us see what’s going on inside the JVM and/or CVD. Hopefully, you can get out some messages or further info. Some of these logs can be pretty large so I’d rather have them e-mailed to me.

For the record, loading of the PGN file is done in a separate thread and some browsers (or JVMs) may delay its execution. Have you tried giving it a minute or two (just waiting) before you give up? (I’m not saying it should normally behave like that but it’s possible)

BTW, give me an idea of what OS, browser, JVM you’re currently using. Is there a chance it might be a 64-bit Linux?

Feb-19-09  Woody Wood Pusher: <VD> I'm happy to try my hand at some troubleshooting, but I'm afraid I am not very computer literate. I can follow instructions though, and I could probably use that Java Console application.

My first question is, how do I get hold of a Java Console application that would work with my set up though?

I am running Knoppix 5.1.0

This comes with two browsers, Iceweasel which I think is basically Firefox and Konqueror (CVD does not work on either of them.)

If you can send me instructions on how to go about starting the troubleshooting then I will give it my best shot.

Thanks.

Feb-19-09  Woody Wood Pusher: <VD> I've been exploring some of the other features on my Knoppix OS and it has a Java Console application on it.

I will have a play with it and see what I can do.

Assuming I can get hold of a log file, where should I email it?

Thanks.

Feb-19-09  Woody Wood Pusher: <VD> I had a go at collecting the log and trace files and I have emailed them to chess@chessgames.com

Are they the files you are interested in?

I think I could get the hang of this with a bit of practice.

Thanks.

Viewer Deluxe: You’re just fine, <Woody>

In fact you’re better than fine, see how you already figured the JC on Knoppix. I couldn’t have helped you there since JC is slightly different on different *nix OS.

What I know for sure is that the Java-plugin is very important and there’re some issues with it. Also, try using Sun’s Java (ie JRE) if you can (I have no idea which one is bundled with Knoppix). For Linux Sun insists that JRE should use GNOME. Again, you have to try it before you draw conclusions. I noticed that Knoppix has some startup options that can let you run GNOME instead of KDE but don’t take my word for granted.

Finally, e-mail me at pilafov [at] hotmail [dot] com. CG are too busy with all the current events and probably won’t notice our small project.

Feb-20-09  Woody Wood Pusher: Hi <VD>

I emailed you the log and trace files with trace levels 1 and 5.

Let me know if you would like the other trace levels done as well, but I'm not sure I am doing it right so I will wait and see what you say.

<For Linux Sun insists that JRE should use GNOME. Again, you have to try it before you draw conclusions. I noticed that Knoppix has some startup options that can let you run GNOME instead of KDE but dont take my word for granted.>

I'm afraid I don't know what JRE and GNOME or KDE are, could you explain it to me? I will try and see if I can do it then.

Thanks.

Viewer Deluxe: If you’ve been with Linux for a while you shouldn’t be surprised, <Woody>

Supporting Java on Linux isn’t straightforward and you’ve already noticed it. I’m not an expert on the subject and there’re many forums and papers that can give you better idea why and how things should be done.

Let’s take a look at this document from Sun:
http://java.sun.com/javase/6/webnot... There are Platform, Version and Desktop Manager columns which explain further the product availability. 1) You won’t be able to find Knoppix under “Version” column of supported Linux configurations; 2) Under “Desktop Manager” column only Gnome is listed as supported on Linux;

By default many Linux systems run KDE as a “Desktop Manager” and you have to change that to Gnome to make sure your JRE is supported. Otherwise it may or may not work, or even just appear to be working at times and fail the next day.

And yes, all the log files you send me indicate that you’re using Sun’s JRE 1.5.0.

Keep us posted

Viewer Deluxe: <Open Defence>, you seem to be getting some results. If "Polgar.Html" fails but "Polgar-Embed.Html" and "Polgar-Obj.Html" work fine, it would mean something. But if they all work and so does "chesstuff.blogspot.com" then we can notify CG that it might be a local problem. (Oh, just ignore the scrolling form. These pages need a cleanning up.)

What an excellent news, <zarg> You did an amazing job figuring this out and so nicely documenting it. I always suspected that it's possible and never understood why Sun should insist on GNOME only. Let me know if you come across anything related to that.

Mar-13-09  zarg: <Viewer Deluxe>
Thx for those nice words! :) I guess the simplest option for running a Live CD, is to try the latest from Ubuntu (GNOME), instead of e.g. Knoppix.

Anyway, if someone struggle with KDE 3 on Kubuntu, just send them to the <"Black Hole">, and I will try to assist them out of it. ;)

Mar-19-09  antichessophobia: Many thanks for such a great pgn game viewer - its truly a work of art. I really like all the features, especially the keyboard navigation (I lean more towards the keyboard more than the mouse). I am using CVD 3.4 in Opera 9.64 using JRE 1.6.0_12, in XP, and have just one minor problem where only the left side numbered trim section is visible and the other 3 trim pieces are not. The board, pieces, moves list, comments, tabs, games list, all display correctly. Maybe this is a newer java version problem. Anyone else experience this?

Viewer Deluxe: You are welcome, <antichessophobia>. This JRE issue is quite recent. Other users (including myself) reported about it Viewer Deluxe chessforum and http://chesstuff.blogspot.com/2009/.... I already tried even the upcoming JRE Update 14 EA (early access) which is not yet released and the problem is still there. I expect that, one way or another, this annoyance will be resolved.

I have downloaded Java '12 yesterday, and I am experiencing the same problem. XP, Firefox 3 -- and an old internet explorer browser.

Viewer Deluxe: You’re not alone, <amadeus>. We are all disappointed in the (lack of) compatibility of Sun’s JRE Update 12. Unfortunately, sometimes the latest and greatest is mere the latest. Stay with the JRE Update 11 http://java.sun.com/products/archiv... for a while until we know for sure what to expect next.

Viewer Deluxe: I’m proud to announce a new product of mine. The <PGN verification tool> that we’ve all been missing for a very long time was just born. Please, visit my blog at http://chesstuff.blogspot.com/2009/.... If you’re not interested in the publishing part feel free to ignore it. Just paste some PGN games and click “Next”. Let me know if you could ever find a valid PGN that wouldn’t go through. I’ve already made sure that invalid ones will be treated appropriately.

Enjoy!

Apr-12-09  vsadek: OS: Win XP SP3, Browser MSIE7, Java build: 1.6.0_13-b03. The problem that users of CVD are experiencing still exists with this latest official version of Java. Interestingly, when I set to MyChess viewer the problem disappears i.e. MyChess works without any problems and shows chessboard properly.

Viewer Deluxe: Thanks for your feedback, <vsadek>. Yes, I’m aware of that. I already tried JRE 1.6.0_14-ea and even JRE7 with the same results. In my opinion that doesn’t prove much. When I have the time I’ll prepare a test case that I can submit as a bug. Unfortunately, such effort is far from fun and I’m not too excited about it.

You’re right that MyChess (which is a pretty decent viewer) seems to work fine. Using it is a good alternative if you want to keep the latest JRE (from Sun) and you don’t need the extra features of CVD.

Viewer Deluxe: By chance I came across a couple of interesting posts about a <PGN Validator> tool. Little over three years ago (2006), <WannaBe> chessgames.com chessforum, and <YouRang> chessgames.com chessforum did a good job describing it.

To them and anybody else who cares, my <PGN Validator> tool (see above) covers all of the important aspects that <YouRang> mentioned and more. Only moves that are true checks/mates will have a “+/#” indicator attached. Captures will always include a ‘x’ symbol. A carefully tested algorithm is used for resolving various ambiguity issues. Shortly, the PGN specification is followed very strictly.

Please, notice that by design the application works with and preserves the original PGN data exactly as submitted by the user. That’s very important until it gets completely validated. After that, in case you like the CVD’s output better, you should use “Copy Game (PGN)” function to get a nicely formatted PGN out of the viewer.

I hope that helps

Apr-20-09  Open Defence: Hi Nikolay, see initially I thought this was an issue with CVD, I switched to a different viewer and it worked for a while. then it started affecting the other viewers.

I am more than ever convinced this is confined to chessgames.com since I do not experience Java issues at any other sites and as I said all the test links I clicked on (which you kindly gave me) worked fine
