| May-30-07 | | chesstoplay: Hi WannaBe,
Hope your trip home was good!
I'm sorry to be intrusive here,
... but as I came to your forum and scrolled down, I noticed that you started a post with... "In my defence...". If anybody wants to point a finger, please have them point it at me. I invited everybody to breakfast as my guests at the Chicago Open. I talked Yury into playing the game here at CG against the World Team. We were all sharing a good will and good luck meal.
At breakfast, I mentioned the game / engines in general conversation. No specifics of position or engines were discussed.
<You in absolutely no way did or said anything wrong.> Yury was pleased to meet you and you vrs yourself.
And everyone at our table is part of an extended chess group of friends. Everyone at the table either does work for me or with me or has worked for me or I have worked with them in one chess related effort or another. Yury is like my brother in chess. Tim Just is one of my best friends. WannaBe, you and you vrs yourself were very welcome guests! GM Varuzhan Akobian is Yury's friend. This was the first time I shared a meal with him. Feel free to repost this anywhere you deem correct or needed. <You were an excellent ambassador of chess for the World Team.> I am pleased to have met you and consider you a friend. I am pleased to be on Team White with you.
Your friend in chess,
Peter / chesstoplay

 | | WannaBe: <whiteshark> That shirt, I think you mean the Ralph T-shirt, is one I wear to every tournament, and take picture in them, (kinda a running inside joke with me) and no, it's not for sale. :-) <chesstoplay> Don't worry about it, it's forgotten. It was a great time, fun for all involved! |
|
| May-31-07 | | whiskeyrebel: WannaBe, congrats! You showed real charachter by having a strong finish in Chi-town. I say, when there's no prize to play for..at least you can ruin your opponents day, eh? |
|
| May-31-07 | | NakoSonorense: <I say, when there's no prize to play for..at least you can ruin your opponents day, eh?> How cruel. Obviously you didn't see the picture of wannabe's last opponent. How can you possibly ruin that little creature's day? :) |
|
| May-31-07 | | whiskeyrebel: I saw it..it's not hard to be cold hearted when you've lost as many games to innocent lambs with deadly chess skills as I have. Soft hearted sorts should stick to basket weaving or that happyface sudoku fluff. |
|
| May-31-07 | | ahmadov: <WannaBe: <ahmadov: Hey, are you Japanese or Chinese???>
I am Chinese, originally born in Taiwan, I've been in the states now 26 years. Came over when I was about 9 yrs old.> Nice to meet you ;) |

| May-31-07 | | WBP: <Wannabe> Hey, thanks for all the pictures! They really add to the feel of the tournament, and Chicago as well (the Wrigley Field and Art Institute shots took me back to my youth!). I played GM Akobian in a simul (40 players) a couple of years ago. In a very even position he blundered the exchange (and that's what it was--an outright blunder--I'm going to post the game in my forum soon, when I can find the score). I became very, very cautious, in an effort to nurse my advantage, and soon found myself in a passive, but defensible position. Unfortunately for me, he'd wiped everyone else out (one draw!), and the last 25 moves or so were played more or less blitz (as is custom in a simul--you move after the player giving the silul moves), GM vs. patzer, with a crowd of 40 or so hovering over. Man was I nervous! He finally got a breakthrough--recovered the exchange and was a pawn up. I resigned there. All told, it was nearly five hours long! The most memorable chess experience of my life! |

| May-31-07 | | HFlew: Hey neat pictures of the Chicago Open! The EF was a bit too much for me, but I know there were a lot of Michigan players there :) Yeah, there's no shame to losing to Ben ;) He's a really strong player!!! |
|
May-31-07
 | | WannaBe: <HFlew> Thanks for dropping by this 'Uber-Patzer' forum! :-) I think Ben will be at National Open next weekend, (he was there last year), will try to get some more pics of the chess players! |

 | | WannaBe: Funniest story from Chicago...
In one game, NN vs. <DrDum>, the game started with 1. e4, and <DrDum> wanted to go into the Pirc, so he picks up a pawn, and moves it one step. Puts 1...d6 into his MonRoi, then looks at the board, and realized he actually picked up the c-pawn. <DrDum> then promptly had to erase and redo the MonRoi, and fly by the seats of his pants into a Caro-Kann!! I think I didn't stop laughing for a good minute when he told me that story after the game. |

| Jun-01-07 | | Benzol: <WannaBe> Is that our own <tpstar> in that picture? |
|
Jun-01-07
 | | WannaBe: <Benzol> Sir, Yes, Sir! Tony Palmer You can see the 'similiarities' between the pictures. =) |

 | | WannaBe: I see that Cubs finally found someone they can beat up on... Their own teammate. |
|
| Jun-02-07 | | chesstoplay: But because they are the Cubs, I'm guessing both players lost. |

I am sadden to see Northwestern's Softball team loss to Tennessee, it mean I won't get to see more Erin Dyer until next year. :-( |

 | | WannaBe: Very fitting, just yesterday, the Sunday Wall Street Journal had an article warning its reader about investing in an inflated Chinese Stock Exchange (Shanghai Index). And today, it fell, big, major correction... |
|

 | | cu8sfan: Hey cool, I see you guys made it to a Cubs game. Hope you had a good time at the Friendly Confines. What do you think, will this be the year? (-: |

 | | cu8sfan: <WannaBe: Very fitting, just yesterday, the Sunday Wall Street Journal had an article warning its reader about investing in an inflated Chinese Stock Exchange (Shanghai Index). And today, it fell, big, major correction...> You know, a sure sign to pull out of the stock market is when everybody, everybody including the average man on the street is starting to jump the bandwaggon. |

 | | cu8sfan: <WannaBe> Seems you guys had a good time in Chicago. Wrigley Field is such a great place to watch a ballgame. I've been to Yankee Stadium and Fenway Park as well. I didn't know Yankee Stadium was going to be demolished. Of the three old ballparks it may be the one that's in worst shape and also the one most likely to not lose any spectators once the team moves to a new venue. As the Cubs don't often field successful teams they would probably suffer most as people go and watch their games just to have been to the ballpark. Even though I'm a Cubs fan I think that the best fans (i.e. most knowledgeable) can be found at Fenway Park. I was there when they clinched their wild-card in 2003. |
|
Jun-05-07
 | | WannaBe: <cu8sfan> Man, you really been to ball (parks) games!! I'm envious... |
|
Jun-06-07
 | | Stonehenge: Is it true that Americans only go to ballparks to eat, drink and chew gum? |
|
Jun-06-07
 | | WannaBe: <Stonehenge> We no longer chew gum at ballparks, we eat peanuts, cracker jacks, or sunflower seeds. (Besides hotdogs, brats & saurkraut, and beer =) |

| Jun-06-07 | | NakoSonorense: Are you watching the game? The Ducks are up 2-1 in the... is it period or quarter? GO USA!! Beat those Canadians! |
