WannaBe: In case I forgot, congrats to them Lady Bruins. =)) U. Mich (69-63) won, but the last spread I saw was -6.5, so if you took UConn w/ spread, you got very lucky, if you bet on them U. Mich, I feel bad; the O/U was 148.5

WannaBe: <CIO> LOL. I remember those mems... <chancho> North by Norwest, totally agree, the audiences know that the plane scene was filmed earlier and played on a screen behind. It was still drama. Same thing with the Mt. Rushmore chase scene.

Nov-29-07  nescio: <I offered a draw after 25... Be5>

I do hope you didn't realize that you were completely lost after 25...Be5. Otherwise the draw offer would be quite inappropriate. :)

WannaBe: <nescio> No, I thought the game was equal... But when I ran it through the computer, I was down 2.22 eval points.
Nov-29-07  nescio: <No, I thought the game was equal...>

That's allright then. I think you played an excellent game up to the 17th. After you decided you needed the h-pawn (what for?) your position detoriated quickly, but 26.Qd2? gave you back some of your advantage. All's well that ends well.

WannaBe: <nescio: ... After you decided you needed the h-pawn...>

Patzer sees free pawn, patzer takes free pawn. =) At that time, I looked at the position, and didn't see any immediate 'problems' if I take the h-pawn. So I did it...

Position after 17. Bf2 (black to play)

click for larger view

Shredder gives 17...Nb4 as the best option, which, I missed. Not seeing the fork and the exchanges that come after =(

1. (-4.69): 17...Nb4 18.Qxc7 Nxd3+ 19.Kb1 Rxc7 20.Bg3 Rd7 21.Rxe7 Rxe7 22.Nc4 b5 23.Rxd3 bxc4

2. (-1.29): 17...Qxh2 18.Bg1 Qf4 19.Kb1 Rc7 20.Ne4 Nb4 21.Qh2 Nxd3 22.Rxd3 Qxh2 23.Nxf6+

Nov-29-07  nescio: <WannaBe> I looked at the game quickly and when I saw 25.g5 Be5 took out my chess set to confirm my suspicions about 26.f4.

17...Nb4 is indeed immediately decisive. I didn't see it either, but was thinking that 17...Nd5 (18.Bg3 Bd6) would give you a nice, compact and promising position.

In analysis it is often possible to win a pawn and get away with it, even if it displaces an important piece, but just as often it requires careful defending.

Dec-01-07  RonB52734: <WannaBe> I have a computer hardware question for you. The Pittsburgh Chess Club's desktop has been shutting down after about 15 minutes of operation. When I say shutting down, I mean it just flicks off instantly, as if someone had unplugged it from the wall. The only way to get it to turn on again is to unplug it (or turn off the surge protector) for about 10 minutes. What do you think is the matter? My uneducated guess is that there's a short circuit somewhere and something is building up either heat or a charge that somehow breaks the circuit after a certain amount of time. Any suggestions?
Dec-01-07  chessmoron: Down goes UCLA! Dorell will be fired.
Dec-01-07  NakoSonorense: <Dorell will be fired.> Throw him down the well.

Bad game from our side. Too many turnovers at critical times. At least our touchdown was the nicest one!

Dec-01-07  chessmoron: Football season is over for UCLA. I think Bruin basketball might finally win a national championship. Freaking awesome players.

WannaBe: 4-6?! That is 0.6666666 in my quick math...

I'd say he didn't shoot enough! Draw more fouls! Put the other team in foul trouble, go to the free throw line. Get into the bonus!

That's what my ol' basketball coach would have said.

WannaBe: UCLA is going to play BYU (again!!) in the Las Vegas Bowl, these two teams already played earlier in the year on Sept. 8th at the Rose Bowl!!!

If Karl Dorrell is gone by Monday, as rumored by the local newspaper, and various TV/on-line articles, will one of the assistant coach(es) take over as (co-) head coach??

And why did we accept a bowl bid? I know there is some money and pay-outs involved by going to a bowl, but to play someone you already played?!?!
