WannaBe: From 2020 to 2024, team that have a player named Will Smith have won the World Series. Time for me to dig up that coffee can from the backyard and put it all on LAD.

WannaBe: I really hope this does not pass, http://news.yahoo.com/s/ap/20090703... if it does, I'd be seriously thinking about moving. (Out of U.S., where our out of touch elected officials are seriously not with the people)

One doth wonder, how did the people during the age of Washington, Lincoln, etc.. era ever lived...

WannaBe: What a load of crap, third paragraph from the bottom:

<Other conditions that Apple deems as possible overheating causes are: leaving the phone in direct sunlight for extended amounts of time or using certain applications in hot conditions or direct sunlight for a long time. An Apple overheating scenario is using GPS tracking in a car on a sunny day or listening to music while in direct sunlight.>

Jul-03-09  Jim Bartle: That means I can never listen to the Beach Boys again?
Jul-03-09  zanshin: As a Lakers fan, I hate seeing Ariza go but am intrigued about Artest coming to LA. I know he can be a problem - I also root for the Pacers because I lived in Indiana for 5 years. And who can forget the Pacers - Pistons brawl? Still, Artest is a proven basketball talent on both sides of the court. Ariza was key for the Lakers, but really only came into prominence in the last post-season. At least that's when I started to notice him. Am I wrong?
Jul-03-09  Jim Bartle: Right now Artest is a much better player than Ariza, a great defender and a good offensive player. The thing is, Ariza is on the way up, Artest probably starting on the way down. Depends on what you want for your team.

I sure wish there were a reality show of Laker practices. There will be some battles between Kobe and Artest in scrimmages.

Jul-03-09  NakoSonorense: I'm not sure Ariza will get much better. He averaged less than 9 points last season, but he played well in the playoffs. As much as I like him, I think he was asking too much to stay with the lakers.

It will be interesting to see Artest playing with Kobe. If they manage to get along well, the Lakers will be unstoppable next season.

chancho: The Celtics had a chance at Kobe when he first entered the draft snd they passed. They had Chauncey Billups, and they let him go. You guys get the picture.
Jul-03-09  Jim Bartle: Well, twelve teams passed on the Kobe, including Boston, which took Antoine Walker, a middling star who never really broke thourgh. In 1996 nobody knew whether high school guys were a good bet. Garnett had done well the year before, but most people wanted college guys or Europeans.

Having said that, Iverson and Camby were the only guys clearly better choices at the time than Kobe. Marbury, Ray Allen, Walker, maybe. Samaki Walker, Erick Dampier, Todd Fuller, Vitaly Potapenko, Lorenzen Wright, Kerry Kittles, give me a break.

chancho: <Jim>, Jerry West grabbed Kobe quicker than you can say piggy, and LA has maintained their winning ways after the Magic Kareem era. He had a Red Auerbach like sense for spotting talent. Mitch Kupchak learned a great deal from the NBA logo guy.
Jul-03-09  Jim Bartle: Oh, I agree on West, absolutely. Giving up Divac for Kobe. They picked up Derek Fisher later in the first round as well.

I hope younger kibitzers (those interested in bball, at least) understand what a great, great player Jerry West was. This guy was Mr. Clutch when Michael Jordan was in grade school, and was strong in every facet of play, except maybe he didn't have blazing speed.

If the Lakers of the 60s had had even an average center they would have taken a couple of titles from the Celts, but they had only nobodies.

Jul-03-09  Jim Bartle: I believe that in the mid-80s the owner wanted to trade James Worthy. West said he would quit if that happened, and Worthy stayed, with the results we know.

BTW, didn't mean to demean Jordan above. He was the best shooting guard ever, West the second best. Kobe may be gaining, but he's got a way to go.

chancho: <Jim> Red Auerbach wasted a pick on a guy still in college for another year: Larry Bird, and when asked why he went and done a fool thing like that, he said: Do you know how fast a year goes? And Bird could have ignored the overture, but he didn't. He signed with the Celts, and they won three championships. Those kind of people who can spot the talent and make those kind of moves are a rare breed.
Jul-03-09  zanshin: <chancho> The thought of Kobe in Celtic green makes me cringe :-0!

chancho: <zanshin> Rick Fox and Brian Shaw used to be Celtics before they joined the Lakers.

Betcha those guys did not make you cringe. ;p

Jul-03-09  zanshin: Good point <chancho> ;-)
Jul-03-09  Jim Bartle: You guys should see the list of college players I was sure were surefire NBA stars, and never went anywhere. Everybody has picked lemons, but Auerbach and West have two of the best records.

Let's look at Auerbach. He was convinced the gangly center Bill Russell was a franchise guy, and traded a couple of All-Stars to get him before he'd played a single game. Then, choosing last in the first round (8th or 9th back then), he picked Sam Jones, Tom Sanders, and John Havlicek. Eight teams passed on Havlicek! And traded for little-known Bill Sharman.

Also Bennie Swain, John Richter, and Gary Phillips, and picked Mel Counts over Willis Reed and Paul Silas. (Though they picked up Silas cheap years later.)

chancho: ...Or dealing the first pick to Golden State to get Robert Parish and the number three pick Kevin Mchale. And trading Rick Robey for Dennis Johnson from Phoenix.
Jul-03-09  Jim Bartle: Oh, shut up, and don't talk about the McHale-Parish trade.

There's more. He took undersized center Dave Cowens near the top of the first round: two championships, two MVPs. He picked up JoJo White and Charlie Scott fairly cheap, got Bailey Howell when Heinsohn faded, Tiny Archibald, Cedric Maxwell, plus always lots of good bench players.

He got lucky with his first star, Bob Cousy, though. Auerbach didn't want the local college star from Holy Cross, but ended up with him anyway. And he became the first great ballhandler in the NBA. (Apologies to Slater Martin.)

chancho: Yeah, those were the good ol days. That and whupping the Lakers year after year after year...wait they kicked their asses by 39 points last year! Although this year yes, the Lakers rule.
Jul-03-09  Jim Bartle: The Celts had a period of real bad luck. Two players died: emerging star Reggie Lewis and surefire star Len Bias. Also, apparently out of loyalty, they held onto their stars of the 80s too long and didn't rebuild.

Then they took Antoine Walker, not a winner in my book no matter how many points he scored, and Raef LaFrentz, using disappointments like Kenny Anderson at point guard. Not good enough to support Paul Pierce. Then you get a strong coach like Doc Rivers and a big-time defender and rebounder like Kevin Garnett (plus shooter Ray Allen) and you're on your way.

chancho: I remember some guy who bought the Celtics who almost made Auerbach quit the Celts and consider going to the Knicks. Auerbach had amassed a ton of picks, and this yahoo owner traded some of them for Bob McAdoo. Without consulting Auerbach first. I think you know the details better than I, <Jim>.

  jessicafischerqueen: My dear <MannBee>

Ok thanks for answering my computer question.

I just changed my "TCP" listening port this morning without knowing what I was doing, so I've been frantically bombing around checking to see of my Computer has lost any function.

After I changed the port number, acting on incomprehensible (to me) instructions from <wiki>, my Puter lost all Internet Connection for a brief time.

But then it came back-

No loss of function that I can tell so far. Just that one curious change with the chessgames bookmark icon on my <IE>.

By the way <IE> really, really sucks IMO. I'm using <Gorilla Firefox> and <Safari> mainly for almost everything except chess websites and online newspapers.

I've just started using <vuze> shareware, and when I changed my TCP listening port this morning the bitrate of my current download increased to five times the old bitrate.

So obviously the suggestion on Wiki to change my TCP "listening port" was correct.

Sadly, I don't understand what that is even.

On the up side, if anything really funky happens I can always do "system restore" and delete every single file on my Hard drive by hand.

If only our real lives had "system restore."

Remember when Superman went back in time to save Lois Lane?

As a noted superhero yourself, I thought you might appreciate this example.

jessicafischerqueen: Cripes I just found out something else- I'm watching a TV show on megavideo right now and it buffered the whole way in about five minutes-

Which is around 10 times faster than the buffering time used to be.

Did my TCP port change increase the download/upload speed of EVERYTHING that comes into my computer?

Not just for torrent downloads, but for everything?

Webpages are loading instantly now at hyper speed.

Why wasn't I informed of this earlier?
