Jun-09-14  Mating Net: I'm worried, I don't like having a 2 goal lead, so used to coming from behind.

WannaBe: Maybe you'd worry less if we have a 3 goals lead.
Jun-09-14  Mating Net: Power play, let's make it three so I can stop worrying!
Jun-09-14  Mating Net: Officially not worrying about this game, and by extension, the series.

WannaBe: Funny story, well, not funny as haha, but still...

Musta been '90 maybe '91, Back at the ol' Forum, Calgary and LA, fighting for the final spot.

(This is going back to the days of Wales and Campbell, Patrick and Norris, all that good stuff)

And if I remember correctly, 4th place finisher in your division plays 1st, 2nd plays 3rd. Hockey have re-aligned many, many times since.

Anyway, this is like 2nd to last game of season, and Flames comes to town, big game, Kings win, they are in, Flames have to win and get help.

Back at the ol' Forum, ("Miracle on Manchester"), there was on a (plexi)glass that separated the visitors and the home team. There was no TV announcer in their own little spot that kept the 2 teams separate.

(Plus you had to skate off the ice to the side openings, you didn't return to the bench and walk down the hall way)

So anyway, things got chippy right off the drop of the puck (I bought a ticket for $50 bucks, nose bleed, face value was $19.99, funny how I remember that...) And both sides were poking and taking whacks at each others shin with their stick.

(Back then, it was only 1 referee and 2 linesmen, before NHL changed and went to 2 and 2 officials)

So, while the ref and linesmen were looking at the action, some activity would always happen out of their eye-sight.

Sure enough (after a line change?) the Flames' bench and Kings' bench were all of a sudden pointin' and yellin' and probably talking about how good Yo MaMa look'd.

That glass partition, I'll never forget this, on one side the Kings players took off their gloves and were palming the glass, the other side the Flames guys did the same.

And the glass got pushed/hoisted <UP> and 2 benches were fighting. Referee called for a stop, sent both team to the locker room with about 3 minutes remaining in the 1st.

After the premature period break, they all came back on ice, played the remainder of the 1st, took another short 30 seconds break, and 2nd period started.

Probably one of the wildest hockey game I've ever seen. Live or on TV.

Jun-09-14  NakoSonorense: Quick had a great game, making stops that seemed almost impossible. The Kings have got this in the bag.

WannaBe: I think everyone should watch that clip of Flames and Kings, just unbelievable, or as kids today would probably say 'Super Crazy'.

Now, this is Miracle on Manchester:
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=bUrW...

Now, this is the good ol' days, St. Patricks Day Massacre:

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=ZY4q...

And of course, you have to include Patrick Roy vs Red Wings, by 2 different goalies.

First time, Roy and Vernon:

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=G7LZ...

Next Year, Roy and Osgood. Great reaction by referee at 0:58 to about 1:10

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=vJlC...

Ah, good ol' days... Don't make hockey players like they used to.

WannaBe: At 3:35 of the Vernon video, you can see how close the two teams' bench are to each other, you can literally lean over and tell your opponent how pretty his Mama is.

Ah, the good ol' days.

Jun-10-14  Mating Net: I love old school hockey! That was a great brawl, using the glass, lol. The crowd must have been going nuts, you're lucky you got to see a classic brawl live. That was 50 bucks well spent. Thank goodness for YouTube because fighting will be gone from the game in a few more years.

WannaBe: It is a necessary part of the game. I have no problem with that. Except when one coach puts in his 4 line goons (at home, last change) against the other teams' first line. And you know what is going to happen.

(some columnists have even speculated why hockey players don't get into trouble off season is because they can 'fight' on ice...

I somewhat believe it)

Jun-10-14  Mating Net: I hear ya, it is necessary. However, all the concussion talk/ litigation and the Steve Moore, Todd Bertuzi trial means that fighting will become cost prohibitive and ripe for elimination. I hope not, but that's what I see.
Jun-10-14  NakoSonorense: Speaking of goons, have you watched "Goon" with that Stifler guy from the American Pie movies?

All of a sudden I want to watch "Slap Shots" again, for the 9 gazillion-billion-trillionth time.
