WannaBe: <Chess Classics> You're welcome, if you need another patzer, just give me a holler. LOL. :-) Swear I'll pay more attention next time! Because if I keep playing like this, I'll get my a$$ kicked in Las Vegas in June...

<sitzkrieg> Just tried this at home, plugged in my wireless, instead of my usual DSL, and immediately it found 8! available connections!!!

of the 8, 3 were secure (you need a key to connect, meaning password before you can tap into their system/bandwidth) the other 5 were wide open, of the 5, 3 were very weak, may be my neighbors across the street or further down the block?? Or out of my receiver's recommended range?! (My manual of the wireless USB receiver said 400 yards, I think that is about 380 meters(??)... or somewhere around there...) And the other 2 were relatively strong.

Next door neighbor maybe, or someone just a few houses away?? But I do not think they set up their wireless network correctly. If I wished, think I can tap/piggy-back into their network, and I believe I can browse any computer(s) that is on the network, not 100% sure, nor do I wish to try... :-)

Since I would be 'stealing' their connection. (I'm on my own DSL land-line right now, and the speed is faster than the wireless.)

Now, if they (my neighbor) have left any folder(s) as shared, or didn't set password to log into their PC, I could potentially steal/do some damage. I think I can also try remote desktop (in XP, after I learn their IP address/or their computer name) and see if they have that enabled by mistake (very doubtful...) and really freak them out. :-)

Usually, bottom line. Protect your a$$...

Further info, a friend of mine, works in sales. And he travels around southern california a lot.

Sometimes he'd turn on his computer to write a little memo to himself, and only to realize that he is on someone's wireless network. (his laptop have wireless receiver built in. While mine doesn't and requires an USB reciever.)

He can sit there all day and use their connection/bandwidth and surf the net.

Now, my work place, the connection is secure, it requires a key, (and it's 20 digits number/alphabet mixed.)

As far as these 'hot spots' or city-wide wireless networking, I don't know to much more detail(s) about it or its security setup, Suppose I could dig around on the net/books... I don't know...

Again, always protect your a$$....

Apr-15-06  suenteus po 147: <WannaBe> Speaking of Las Vegas, how is your preparation and training going for your six games? Do you need a sparring partner to test your openings and defenses against? I have plenty of free time to play practice games or to play whatever defenses or opening you think you are likely to face. Just let me know!
Apr-15-06  Chess Classics: <WannaBe> Can I be your second? :-)

Regards,
CC

Apr-15-06  Chess Classics: Okay, here's my first bit of opening advice-my friend calls it the "Bronx Defence".

Before the game starts, you bribe a police officer into driving you to the tournament while he has the sirens on. (Make sure you are wearing something expensive.) After the pairings are released, take your opponent aside and say, in your best hoity-toity accent, "It moight be very hu'tful to win this game. Perhaps a little unhealthy. Bad things could happen." As a minor, this rarely works for me, but you might have some success...

Regards,
CC

<suenteus po 147> I plan to use the FICS games I have played with <you vs yourself>, <MidknightBlue>, and a few others <jwgoes> etc... as study guide. And then depending on your match schedule, do that also. :-)

WannaBe: Life is complicated, I wish at times, that I do not have someone else to complicate it more for/with me.
Apr-17-06  brankat: Very good observation. I suppose a thought like that one occurs to all of us from time to time. That's why it is important to try, as much as possible, to create circunstances which You feel comfortable with. To be able to depend as little as possible on external factors. Of course, it is much easier said than done. Like anything else it does require some planning, determination and practice.

One could actually compare the thing to positional play in Chess! When You make mistakes due to lack of planning, hasty decisions etc, Your position is undermined, and, of course, You don't like it.

But, I'm certain, a guy of Your intelligence and enthusiasm will find a way, and prevail. All the best to You, my friend!

Apr-17-06  Cogano: Hello <WannaBe> my friend & I hope all is well & that you had a FANTASTIC Easter weekend (assuming you celebrate that but I hope you had a FANTASTIC weekend period!). :) Well, as I'm sure you've gathered from other sites, I'll be taking a break from this site.

Until I discovered this site I didn't spend that much time on the computer. & all the extra usage has taken a great toll on my health & relegated many things to being postponed & neglected. So a break is more than due. Yes I will return. & yes I'll still check & respond to my e-mails. But for the most part I won't be using the computer. So anyway, take very good care my friend, good luck to you on your games & have a great day. :) Cheers mate! :)

Apr-18-06  mandar: I want to download opening book of Evans Gambit,Two Knights and Kings Indian. I want Evans Gambit from white side,And rest two i want from black side.I also need some traps in these openings. Pls help me out -thank u.
Sorry for posting the same message but i m in dire need of help.
Apr-18-06  themadhair: <mandar>
http://home.eplus-online.de/schach/... for an MCO style approach to the evans.

http://www.rci.rutgers.edu/~goeller... Has a list of links for the evans - just search the page for "evans" to find the links. Also has links for the king's gambit and the king's indian.

As for traps - don't play an inferior move hoping for a 'cheapo'. Hope chess never pays. Hope you find what you are looking for.

Apr-19-06  midknightblue: <mandar> consider splurging and buying the great evans gambit debate by rohdes or italian opening and evans gambit by pinski. the first book is less than 100 pages of repertoire style telling white how to select the best moves and referencing some famous old games (and new) along the way. You will almost certainly enjoy it.

Regarding traps - I think you need to know them. I am learning the french opening and online I play opponents that fall for traps over and over. I am not compromising my moves looking for cheapos, but when white falters - I know how to capitalize. Good luck.

Apr-19-06  midknightblue: forgot why I came to this page. Wanted to vent - I am at work and noone has responded to my posts yet - I feel as if I need to start trolling just to get a few responses.

By the way - hello <themadhair> I am Irish too. Born in Dublin. Although I grew up in the United States and now live in Honolulu. I see that we play some of the same openings. The scandinavian and the gruenfeld. Do you play online anywhere? Which site?

Apr-19-06  midknightblue: <wannabe> do you you have a list of the chessgamers planning on going to vegas? I look forward to meeting you guys! best of luck in your preparations! I will be in the u1600.
Apr-19-06  themadhair: <midknightblue>
I play on gameknot under the same handle. As for the scandinavian - rather that recapture the pawn with the queen I play Nf6 instead, the "elephant gambit". As for the gruenfeld - I like the bishop+knight Vs bishop+knight endgame that usually results and not the opening itself!. Feel free to drom me a game.

WannaBe: <midknightblue> So far, I'm in for sure, and looks like you're in too. <DrDum> hasn't paid yet, but he said he is 85% sure he will be going.

It will definitely fun meeting people. =)

  WannaBe: Note to self....

1. e4 c5 2. Nf3 d6 3. d4 cxd4 4. Nxd4 Nf6 5. Nc3 a6 6. Be3 e6 7. g4

I see that black's best response is 7...h6

1. e4 c5 2. Nf3 d6 3. d4 cxd4 4. Nxd4 Nf6 5. Nc3 a6 6. Bc4 e6 7. Bb3 Be7 8. g4

And according to Opening Explorer, white has great winning percentages! The move for black is 7...b5, not Be7 as one would try, like a Najdorf or Scheveningen.
