Now 8 ... Bxd1? 9. Bxf7+ Ke7 10. Nd5# (Legal's Mate) so Black should play 8 ... dxe5 9. Qxg4 Nf6 and material is even. Compare J N Berger vs Frohlich, 1888 & Werner vs Stuttard, 1976 but I don't find this line in the db. They eventually reached this position:

tpstar: Ruy Lopez Steinitz - strongly encourage 4. d4 for both to gain the center and avoid Noah's Ark situations.

P) French Tarrasch, 5. Bd3 over 5. Ngf3, avoid 7. Bb5!? trading off Good Bishop, 12. Rd1? lost a Pawn to 12 ... Be2 13. Re1 Bxf3 14. gxf3 Qxd4 and Black was better, Black won second Pawn and was clearly winning with 18 ... Nc4 but lost Queen for Bishop, White gave back Queen to remain a Rook up, easy RR vs R win yet several chances to improve technique.

M) Ruy Lopez Steinitz, 4. d4 over 4. Nc3, 6 ... Na5 7. Bd5?! lost time (7. 0-0), should have been Noah's Arked after 9. d4?! but Black played 9 ... Qc7, even middlegame until Black could have won Pe4, instead White won Pe5 and then advanced e4-e5 to fork Rd6 & Nf6 to win a piece, traded Queens and passed Pc7 was decisive.

tpstar: P) 1. e4 e5 2. d3, discussed 2 ... Bc5 over 2 ... Nf6, decent game out of opening except White had Bad Be2, allowed take-back to avoid White losing the exchange, soon Black dropped a Bc3 to Ne4 fork, won 2 Pawns, won B, traded Rooks into lost K&P endgame.

M) 1. e3 d5 2. d4 Nc6!? 3. b3, he seems to like QN on c6 instead of ... Nbd7 or ... c5/... Nc6, good pressure on weak Kingside light squares, nice Knight outpost on c4, won material and mated on g2.

P) Ruy Lopez Bird's, 4. Nxd4 exd4 was best, 5. 0-0 over 5. b3!?, unusual fork with Qc4 against Nd5 & Bc5, won Ra8, Black had good attack with QRN against Q on Kingside and should have won but misplayed it for 1-0.

M) 1. e4 e5 2. Nc3 Bc5!?, won a Pawn, then won exchange (Nxh8), weak back rank and 1-0.

P) Polish, good opening by Black, even play until White lost a Pawn, 26 ... Nc5 over 26 ... Na5, 31 ... Ne5 over 31 ... Nb8, traded down into won endgame:

Here 60 ... e2+ 61. Bxe2 Nxe2 62. Kxe2 Kc3 wins, instead 60 ... Kc3!? and drew.

M) 1. d3 d5 2. f4 Nf6, great opening by Black with early ... e5, won Pf4 but gave it right back, good Kingside play and won Ph4, White trapped Queen against h7 so Q for R, White converted advantage nicely for 1-0.

tpstar: P) Petrov with 5. b3!?, E Cravens vs M Patrick, 1996 , look closer at ... Qf6 possibilities, equal out of opening with opposite castling, traded major pieces, won Bb2 due to Discovery (23 ... d3+!), BN vs BNN and converted lengthy endgame.

M) Ruy Lopez with 3 ... a6 4. Ba4 Bc5, discussed 4 ... Nf6, Cordel Edward Lasker vs Alekhine, 1924 , lost Pb5, lost Pe5, should have lost Pf7 = busted, White didn't take right away and Black won exchange on a1, then Black won Bf7 after Removing Defender (18 ... d6 19. Nxc6+ Kxf7) so R for 3P, traded down to win.

tpstar: P) Vienna into KGA, 5. Nge2? Nxe4 and Black already up a Pawn, even middlegame, nice Discovery to trade Queens, White got Bh7 trapped, Black converted RB vs R endgame for 0-1.

M) QGD Slav, 4. Bg5 dc 5. Bxf6!? exf6, consolidated Pc4 with 10 ... b5, erred with 11 ... c5? losing a Pawn, should have developed before chasing Pb2 with Queen, lost piece to Rook fork (Qa2 & Na6), down 2 pieces and 1-0.

P) Borg, discussed 3. f4, 4. b3/5. Bb2 very slow plan, Black got decent game out of the opening, White should have lost exchange from extended Knight fork (18 ... Ne3 19. Rf2 Nc2), Black sacrificed exchange for attack, White missed best defense a few times and Black won.

M) Irregular QP = 1. d4 d5 2. Bf4 Bf5, gave up a Pawn to advance Kingside Pawns with tempo, good tactics to use Bishops & Queen and infiltrate, won Q for RB for 0-1.

P) QGD Slav as White, even opening and middlegame, drawn Q6P vs Q6P endgame but White traded Queens and Black should have won, then Black dropped a key Pawn and White should have won, then White got King outside the Square so Black won. K&P endgame technique discussed at length.

M) Ruy Lopez with 4 ... Bc5 5. Nc3, Fork Trick 7. Nxe5 but Black didn't racapture so White won a Pawn, should have castled but played 9. e5!? & 11. e6?!, Black had quick win with 13. 0-0? Rxf2!, instead 13 ... Nxf2 but attack too much and 0-1, 22. Sound opening play discussed at length.

tpstar: P) QGD Slav 5. Qb3 Qb6 6. Qxb6 axb6, S Takacs vs Spielmann, 1922 , White traded 7. Bxf6 exf6 so Black had 2 sets of doubled Pawns, even middlegame, traded down evenly into N vs B endgame, White obtained passed Pd5, Black erred by trading B for N into lost K&P endgame for 1-0.

M) Scandinavian 2. ed Nf6 3. Nc3 Nxd5 4. Bc4 Nxc3 5. Qf3!? e6 6. dxc3, consider 6. Qxc3 to keep Pawns intact Kholmov vs H Bohm, 1975 , 7. Bb5+ wasted time, White intended 0-0-0 anyway (12. b3 & 13. Bb2), even QRN vs QRB middlegame, 24. Nh4? should have lost a Pawn (24 ... ef), instead 24 ... Bf7? lost a Pawn, White missed Mate in One (32. Bxc3 Ne4, 5 ... 0-0 Sajtar vs Szabo, 1953 instead, Black played early 9 ... b5!? hitting the Qc4 but leaving big holes, consider 9 ... 0-0 and hold off on Queenside Pawn storm until castling, White dropped a Pawn, then Black dropped a Pawn, missed opportunity to win exchange (22 ... d3! 23. Bxd3 Nxd3 24. Qxd3 Bf5 25. Qc4 Bd3), White won exchange but Black had 2 connected passed Pawns, had quicker win with 34 ... Bd3! which forces Queening but soon 0-1.
