<Jer 20:10-13

Jeremiah said:

"I hear the whisperings of many:
'Terror on every side!
Denounce!
Let us denounce him!'
All those who were my friends are on the watch for any misstep of mine.

Perhaps he'll be trapped; then we can prevail, and take our vengeance on him.

But the LORD is with me, like a mighty champion: my persecutors will stumble, they will not triumph.

In their failure, they will be put to utter shame, to lasting, unforgettable confusion.

O LORD of hosts, you who test the just, who probe mind and heart, let me witness the vengeance you take on them, for to you, I have entrusted my cause.

Sing to the LORD,
praise the LORD,
for he has rescued the life of the poor
from the power of the wicked!">

<1 Corinthians 13

13 If I speak in the tongues of men or of angels, but do not have love, I am only a resounding gong or a clanging cymbal. 2 If I have the gift of prophecy and can fathom all mysteries and all knowledge, and if I have a faith that can move mountains, but do not have love, I am nothing. 3 If I give all I possess to the poor and give over my body to hardship that I may boast, but do not have love, I gain nothing.

4 Love is patient, love is kind. It does not envy, it does not boast, it is not proud. 5 It does not dishonor others, it is not self-seeking, it is not easily angered, it keeps no record of wrongs. 6 Love does not delight in evil but rejoices with the truth. 7 It always protects, always trusts, always hopes, always perseveres.

8 Love never fails. But where there are prophecies, they will cease; where there are tongues, they will be stilled; where there is knowledge, it will pass away.

9 For we know only in part, and we prophesy only in part; 10 but when the complete comes, the partial will come to an end. 11 When I was a child, I spoke like a child, I thought like a child, I reasoned like a child; when I became an adult, I put an end to childish ways. 12 For now we see in a mirror, dimly, but then we will see face to face. Now I know only in part; then I will know fully, even as I have been fully known. 13 And now faith, hope, and love abide, these three; and the greatest of these is love.>

<The Promise of the Lord's Coming

The Second Letter of Peter

Chapter 3

1 This is now, beloved, the second letter I am writing to you; in them I am trying to arouse your sincere intention by reminding you

2 that you should remember the words spoken in the past by the holy prophets, and the commandment of the Lord and Savior spoken through your apostles.

3 First of all you must understand this, that in the last days scoffers will come, scoffing and indulging their own lusts

4 and saying, Where is the promise of his coming? For ever since our ancestors died, all things continue as they were from the beginning of creation!?

5 They deliberately ignore this fact, that by the word of God heavens existed long ago and an earth was formed out of water and by means of water,

6 through which the world of that time was deluged with water and perished.

7 But by the same word the present heavens and earth have been reserved for fire, being kept until the day of judgment and destruction of the godless.

8 But do not ignore this one fact, beloved, that with the Lord one day is like a thousand years, and a thousand years are like one day.

9 The Lord is not slow about his promise, as some think of slowness, but is patient with you, not wanting any to perish, but all to come to repentance.

10 But the day of the Lord will come like a thief, and then the heavens will pass away with a loud noise, and the elements will be dissolved with fire, and the earth and everything that is done on it will be disclosed.

11 Since all these things are to be dissolved in this way, what sort of persons ought you to be in leading lives of holiness and godliness,

12 waiting for and hastening the coming of the day of God, because of which the heavens will be set ablaze and dissolved, and the elements will melt with fire?

13 But, in accordance with his promise, we wait for new heavens and a new earth, where righteousness is at home.

Final Exhortation and Doxology

14 Therefore, beloved, while you are waiting for these things, strive to be found by him at peace, without spot or blemish;

15 and regard the patience of our Lord as salvation. So also our beloved brother Paul wrote to you according to the wisdom given him,

16 speaking of this as he does in all his letters. There are some things in them hard to understand, which the ignorant and unstable twist to their own destruction, as they do the other scriptures.

17 You therefore beloved, since you are forewarned, beware that you are not carried away with the error of the lawless and lose your own stability.

18 But grow in the grace and knowledge of our Lord and Savior Jesus Christ. To him be the glory both now and to the day of eternity.

Amen.>

~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
<Psalm 23
The Lord is my shepherd; there is nothing I shall not want.
2 He maketh me to lie down in green pastures: he leadeth me beside the still waters.
3 He restoreth my soul: he leadeth me in the paths of righteousness for his name's sake.
4 Yea, though I walk through the valley of the shadow of death, I will fear no evil: for thou art with me; thy rod and thy staff they comfort me.
5 Thou preparest a table before me in the presence of mine enemies: thou anointest my head with oil; my cup runneth over.
6 Surely goodness and mercy shall follow me all the days of my life: and I will dwell in the house of the Lord for ever.>
  jessicafischerqueen: I think you are an internet search genius.
Not just finding the cache of my profile- but for coming up with rare chess websites and photos, seemingly every single time I'm working on something.
Thanks <chancho> I'm really glad you are an active member at this website.
I also find it hilarious that Edward Winter lets you post material on his site under the name "chancho," when he is so assiduous about demanding a real mailing address and such.
I think your contributions are "an offer he can't refuse."
Possibly your real name is Vito Corleone.
Jan-16-11  izimbra: <chancho> I'm "from" the Philadelphia area, but I was around Boston while going to grad school at MIT in '87-'91. Somerville was the first place I moved to in the area (my share of rent was only around $175/month); later I lived with a girl in Cambridge off of Central Sq.
I'm interested in how places I've known well at some point in time have changed, before and after. Whenever I run into old photos, sketches, or maps of these places, I give them a good looking over. In the case of Somerville, it was changing super fast (esp. Davis Sq.) even during that short period.
Chess related: Pillsbury grew up in Somerville and the Boylston chess club is base there nowadays: http://somervillenews.typepad.com/t...
There's a lot of trend stuff there now. Back then, my #1 reason to go through Davis Sq. was to grab a diner type eggs/bacon/toast breakfast at a little place which closed by 2 p.m. It's what I think of first when I hear Tom's Diner: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=GQyj...
Jan-16-11  izimbra: Re: <Bachmann?> She's kind of a nut house, but I guess your are asking for insight about how she gets elected where she does?
My knowledge of MN regional politics is mediocre, but better than it used to be. Basically, the Twin Cities (Minneapolis and St. Paul) is heavily Democratic, there is another heavily Democratic area near Duluth and what they call "the Iron Range" where Dylan is from), the near suburbs are swing votes, and the rest of the state is your basic rural Republican config. Farther suburbs that were still seeing a lot of construction development prior to the housing crash, like Chanhassen (where Prince built his "Purple Palace") are also heavily R.
In the 1960s and 1970s, the R party in MN was moderate - similar to the moderate R's in the N.E. U.S. But that approach has gotten squeezed out of present day politics and is largely extinct. For instance, one of the most hard hitting editorials against G.W. Bush when he was running in 2004 that I came across nationally was written by former MN (R) governor, Elmer Andersen. Outgoing MN (R) governor Pawlenty was originally quite conservative, but without the extremism of the current national Rep. party. However, when he started getting serious about making a 2012 bid to be the Rep. presidential nominee, he shifted dramatically, and obviously towards the Southern, extremist style that dominates national Rep. politics today. The Dem party in MN, called the "DFL" (Democratic-Farmer-Labor) is more liberal than the national Dem party, similar to what the national party was like in the 1970s. Emmer, the R. nominee for the 2010 gov. election was more conservative than the original Pawlenty, and lost a squeeker to DFL candidate Dayton, who was running to the left of national politics. About 11% of the vote went to Independence Party candidate Tom Horner, whose platform was socially liberal, but less "tax and spend" than Dayton. I think he would have been close to or above the 18% vote of his predecessor (T. Penny) in the 2006 election if not for the extreme closeness of the election and the recent memory of the Franken vs. Coleman recount in an election where IP candidate D. Barkley got about 15% of the vote.
Getting back to "How Bachmann wins where she does?" I'm just guessing, but I think:
1) Semi-rural district - includes small cities of St. Cloud and Stillwater, and Twin City suburb of Woodbury, but largely farms.
2) MN DFL party tends to be doctrinal liberal, which doesn't play well in modern day rural areas.
3) She is outspoken, unapologetic advocate for more socially conservative policy based on Evangelical Christian values - we have some friends from India who live in Woodbury (male half is a ChemE at 3M); they are super good people, and ultra-Evangelical; I wouldn't dream of bringing up politics with them, but I guess they vote for Bachmann just based on their religious orientation.
4) She has kind of an independent streak that plays well in MN. As an analogy, think of Tom Coburn, Sen (R) OK, who is also known for some nuttiness (claimed Lesbian gangs were a threat to the nation's high schools) and is very conservative, but is also obviously not bent in the way most national politicians are and votes his own principles consistently. Coburn and Obama are supposedly pretty good friends. Bachmann's is nuttier and more overtly politicized than Coburn, but I guess that some voters in her district perceive and value some of that type of independence.
5) The people running against her in the last two campaigns don't seem to have found any galvanizing campaign issues beyond being anti-Bachmann.
Jan-16-11  izimbra: Back in the day, the best record store in Philly was called "Third Street Jazz" (had everything) and located on Third Street just north of Market.
I made a funny typo above when I wrote "Bachmann's" because <Bachman's> (one n) is actually name of well known Twin Cities chain of florist/garden centers. Throw on 6): I'm sure some inattentive people probably think of MB as that "that nice flower lady".
I don't know Woburn too well, but I think I visited an H.H. Richardson building there - maybe a library? H.H. is all over Boston area, while Philadelphia has a bunch of buildings from his similar 19thC contemporary, Frank Furness.
Told me he saw her play at a coffee house talent show, went up to her afterwards and says "You're really good. Can I be your manager?" I don't remember whether she looked at him funny or just said "No thank you."
I saw her once at a Taqueria in the Mission (SF, CA, USA) after she was famous...Didn't try to bother her.
