<Jer 20:10-13

Jeremiah said:

"I hear the whisperings of many:
'Terror on every side!
Denounce!
Let us denounce him!'
All those who were my friends are on the watch for any misstep of mine.

Perhaps he'll be trapped; then we can prevail, and take our vengeance on him.

But the LORD is with me, like a mighty champion: my persecutors will stumble, they will not triumph.

In their failure, they will be put to utter shame, to lasting, unforgettable confusion.

O LORD of hosts, you who test the just, who probe mind and heart, let me witness the vengeance you take on them, for to you, I have entrusted my cause.

Sing to the LORD,
praise the LORD,
for he has rescued the life of the poor
from the power of the wicked!">

<1 Corinthians 13

13 If I speak in the tongues of men or of angels, but do not have love, I am only a resounding gong or a clanging cymbal. 2 If I have the gift of prophecy and can fathom all mysteries and all knowledge, and if I have a faith that can move mountains, but do not have love, I am nothing. 3 If I give all I possess to the poor and give over my body to hardship that I may boast, but do not have love, I gain nothing.

4 Love is patient, love is kind. It does not envy, it does not boast, it is not proud. 5 It does not dishonor others, it is not self-seeking, it is not easily angered, it keeps no record of wrongs. 6 Love does not delight in evil but rejoices with the truth. 7 It always protects, always trusts, always hopes, always perseveres.

8 Love never fails. But where there are prophecies, they will cease; where there are tongues, they will be stilled; where there is knowledge, it will pass away.

9 For we know only in part, and we prophesy only in part; 10 but when the complete comes, the partial will come to an end. 11 When I was a child, I spoke like a child, I thought like a child, I reasoned like a child; when I became an adult, I put an end to childish ways. 12 For now we see in a mirror, dimly, but then we will see face to face. Now I know only in part; then I will know fully, even as I have been fully known. 13 And now faith, hope, and love abide, these three; and the greatest of these is love.>

<The Promise of the Lord's Coming

The Second Letter of Peter

Chapter 3

1 This is now, beloved, the second letter I am writing to you; in them I am trying to arouse your sincere intention by reminding you

2 that you should remember the words spoken in the past by the holy prophets, and the commandment of the Lord and Savior spoken through your apostles.

3 First of all you must understand this, that in the last days scoffers will come, scoffing and indulging their own lusts

4 and saying, Where is the promise of his coming? For ever since our ancestors died, all things continue as they were from the beginning of creation!?

5 They deliberately ignore this fact, that by the word of God heavens existed long ago and an earth was formed out of water and by means of water,

6 through which the world of that time was deluged with water and perished.

7 But by the same word the present heavens and earth have been reserved for fire, being kept until the day of judgment and destruction of the godless.

8 But do not ignore this one fact, beloved, that with the Lord one day is like a thousand years, and a thousand years are like one day.

9 The Lord is not slow about his promise, as some think of slowness, but is patient with you, not wanting any to perish, but all to come to repentance.

10 But the day of the Lord will come like a thief, and then the heavens will pass away with a loud noise, and the elements will be dissolved with fire, and the earth and everything that is done on it will be disclosed.

11 Since all these things are to be dissolved in this way, what sort of persons ought you to be in leading lives of holiness and godliness,

12 waiting for and hastening the coming of the day of God, because of which the heavens will be set ablaze and dissolved, and the elements will melt with fire?

13 But, in accordance with his promise, we wait for new heavens and a new earth, where righteousness is at home.

Final Exhortation and Doxology

14 Therefore, beloved, while you are waiting for these things, strive to be found by him at peace, without spot or blemish;

15 and regard the patience of our Lord as salvation. So also our beloved brother Paul wrote to you according to the wisdom given him,

16 speaking of this as he does in all his letters. There are some things in them hard to understand, which the ignorant and unstable twist to their own destruction, as they do the other scriptures.

17 You therefore beloved, since you are forewarned, beware that you are not carried away with the error of the lawless and lose your own stability.

18 But grow in the grace and knowledge of our Lord and Savior Jesus Christ. To him be the glory both now and to the day of eternity.

Amen.>

~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
<Psalm 23
The Lord is my shepherd; there is nothing I shall not want.
2 He maketh me to lie down in green pastures: he leadeth me beside the still waters.
3 He restoreth my soul: he leadeth me in the paths of righteousness for his name's sake.
4 Yea, though I walk through the valley of the shadow of death, I will fear no evil: for thou art with me; thy rod and thy staff they comfort me.
5 Thou preparest a table before me in the presence of mine enemies: thou anointest my head with oil; my cup runneth over.
6 Surely goodness and mercy shall follow me all the days of my life: and I will dwell in the house of the Lord for ever.>
Have you bet on the Super Bowl? Which team do you pick to win? Today the Vegas odds were -7 on the Colts.
  WannaBe: Some of my 'friends' who are into betting are taking the free 7 points, (taking Chicago).
Some of the professional sports handicappers in Vegas says the real line/true odd, should be only 4 pts, not seven. So, they too, are taking Chicago.
There were some numbers printed in the paper yesterday, that in the last 10 games or so, favourite have only covered twice, with one push (Rams-Titans).
Personally, if I'm a betting man, I'd take Chicago. And remember, no indoor team have won the Super Bowl outdoors, the only indoor team to win the Super Bowl (St. Rams) beat Tennessee Titans in New Orleans SuperDome.
Feb-04-07  brankat: <Eric Schiller> <Bill Wall> Hi!
In the next 3 months we'll be teammates, so, let me introduce myself: the name is Branko Katic. I live on Canadian West Coast, in the city of Vancouver. As far as Chess goes, I've not been really active for years, untill very recently, since I joined CG.com community. You can find more details in my Profile and Forum.
I feel very privilleged, indeed flattered, to be on the same team with Masters of Chess like You two gentlemen!
Frankly, I'm not sure at all how much I can contribute to our common cause here, but I will try my best.
The first two games start in 6/7 days, so it may be helpful/useful to, perhaps, have some preliminary consultation, at least as far as Openings and our general approach goes. There just may not be enough time for this (only 3 hours) once the games are on.
I don't know much about Computer Chess, played only 2 games so far (last year), and lost them both :-)
The games will be played on Yahoo, discussions are to take place in this forum, the analyses on c. screen board or an actual Chess board, possibly both. Maybe some Opening Explorer consulting, etc. There will be a lot of shuffling around, switching from program to program, typing/posting ideas, replying, reaching consensus!
All in all, very time consuming. And we'll have only 3 hours!
So, again, I believe it would be a good idea, to touch bases up-front. To have at least a basic understanding/agreement on some variations we may want to consider, types of middle-game setups we may prefer when playing against powerful programs. Also, to come up with a practical/feasible "method" to overcome difficulties imposed by Time Controls and a variety of sites. It would be hard to do all this "as we go", during games.
If You have any ideas and suggestions regarding the above, please post them here, so we can be reasonably well prepared by next weekend.
Thank You.
  wwall: Toga will have White the first game. It seems to have a large opening repertoire, but most likely will play 1.e4 or 1.d4. Perhaps best for Black is to play the Sicilian if 1.e4 (although it has lost to a few Ruy Lopezes) and an Indian defense if 1.d4. (1.d4 Nf6 2.c4 e6 and ...b6 looks promising, but it has also played 1.d4 Nf6 2.Bg5). Other openings that it may play include 1.c4, 1.Nf3, 1.b3, and 1.g3. These openings are rarer for Toga.
  WannaBe: Re: My previous post, that's why I am not a gambling man.
Indianapolis is the first indoor team to win a Super Bowl outdoors, cover the spread, and make me look stupid.
Well, actually, all my chess opponents makes me look stupid.
  Eric Schiller: I'm inclined toward a more Classical approach to 1.d4 and flank openings, and a solid Caro-Kann or riskier Pterodactyl against 1.e4.
Feb-05-07  chessmoron: <Eric Schiller> <Bill Wall> <brankat> Just a notice, <themadhair>, the programmer of Toga II 1.2.1a will be using his self-made book rather than the engines.
Feb-05-07  YouRang: <Superbowl impressions> Kind of a let-down of a game. Lots of fumbles, and turnovers. Lousy weather. Lousy half-time show. Fortunately, the score was fairly close most of the time.
Manning played a solid, competent, but boring game. Lots of short passes (again, partly due to the weather). But he didn't have to shine too brightly in order to outshine Grossman. The Colts were able to win without having to be at their best.
  tpstar: Lousy half-time show?! Gett Off.
I'm glad the game was somewhat competitive, even though the Colts were clearly better. Sometimes the Super Bowl is the worst game of the year, an early blow-out where the second half is garbage time, which becomes deliciously ironic given all the hype.
  Eric Schiller: <chessmoron> Please remind me on schedule and rules for this weekend's event.
As for the game, the number of tu4rnovers was ridiculous but outcome was expected. Those aren't the 1985 Bears, who might have been able to stop Peyton.
Feb-05-07  chessmoron: <Eric> Saturday: Toga II 1.2.1a vs Schiller/Wall/brankat at 13:00 EST (10:00 a.m. your time and Branko's as well)
Sunday: Schiller/Wall/brankat- Deep Fritz 10 at 13:00 EST (10:00 a.m.)
3 Hours for each game but programmers should set their machines at 2 hours and 30 minutes to ensure them to not lose time.
All the rules is placed on my profile.
  Eric Schiller: We are going to be socked with a major storm Saturday, and power outages are likely. What should we do in that case? Normally, Pg&E either fixes immediately or after about 4 hours. I'm only a block from the ocean and a storm from the west hits hard.
Feb-08-07  chessmoron: <Eric> Maybe use your laptop. Can your batteries last 6 hours?
Feb-08-07
Premium Chessgames Member
  WannaBe: Common sense dictates, that if a storm hits and electricity goes out, the whole house/block/neighborhood would be without power.
Therefore, Mr. Schiller wouldn't not have internet connection, because his DLS/Cable would have no power. And therefore can't access the outside world.
I don't know how his laptop is going to help, even with a six hours worth of battery life. Perhaps you can enlighten us how to access the internet when you have no power coming into your house/block/neighborhood.
Perhaps Mr. Schiller can go out to a Starbucks or Barnes and Noble (in the storm...) and use their hot spot?
  Eric Schiller: Alas, my laptop power supply stopped working when I got back from Gibraltar, probably an auto-switching thing. I've ordered a replacement but it won't be here for a while.
When the power goes it takes the Internet connection down, and power outages are likely this weekend. So we'll just have to hope they don't come at game time.
