<Jer 20:10-13

Jeremiah said:

"I hear the whisperings of many:
'Terror on every side!
Denounce!
Let us denounce him!'
All those who were my friends are on the watch for any misstep of mine.

Perhaps he'll be trapped; then we can prevail, and take our vengeance on him.

But the LORD is with me, like a mighty champion: my persecutors will stumble, they will not triumph.

In their failure, they will be put to utter shame, to lasting, unforgettable confusion.

O LORD of hosts, you who test the just, who probe mind and heart, let me witness the vengeance you take on them, for to you, I have entrusted my cause.

Sing to the LORD,
praise the LORD,
for he has rescued the life of the poor
from the power of the wicked!">

<1 Corinthians 13

13 If I speak in the tongues of men or of angels, but do not have love, I am only a resounding gong or a clanging cymbal. 2 If I have the gift of prophecy and can fathom all mysteries and all knowledge, and if I have a faith that can move mountains, but do not have love, I am nothing. 3 If I give all I possess to the poor and give over my body to hardship that I may boast, but do not have love, I gain nothing.

4 Love is patient, love is kind. It does not envy, it does not boast, it is not proud. 5 It does not dishonor others, it is not self-seeking, it is not easily angered, it keeps no record of wrongs. 6 Love does not delight in evil but rejoices with the truth. 7 It always protects, always trusts, always hopes, always perseveres.

8 Love never fails. But where there are prophecies, they will cease; where there are tongues, they will be stilled; where there is knowledge, it will pass away.

9 For we know only in part, and we prophesy only in part; 10 but when the complete comes, the partial will come to an end. 11 When I was a child, I spoke like a child, I thought like a child, I reasoned like a child; when I became an adult, I put an end to childish ways. 12 For now we see in a mirror, dimly, but then we will see face to face. Now I know only in part; then I will know fully, even as I have been fully known. 13 And now faith, hope, and love abide, these three; and the greatest of these is love.>

<The Promise of the Lord's Coming

The Second Letter of Peter

Chapter 3

1 This is now, beloved, the second letter I am writing to you; in them I am trying to arouse your sincere intention by reminding you

2 that you should remember the words spoken in the past by the holy prophets, and the commandment of the Lord and Savior spoken through your apostles.

3 First of all you must understand this, that in the last days scoffers will come, scoffing and indulging their own lusts

4 and saying, Where is the promise of his coming? For ever since our ancestors died, all things continue as they were from the beginning of creation!?

5 They deliberately ignore this fact, that by the word of God heavens existed long ago and an earth was formed out of water and by means of water,

6 through which the world of that time was deluged with water and perished.

7 But by the same word the present heavens and earth have been reserved for fire, being kept until the day of judgment and destruction of the godless.

8 But do not ignore this one fact, beloved, that with the Lord one day is like a thousand years, and a thousand years are like one day.

9 The Lord is not slow about his promise, as some think of slowness, but is patient with you, not wanting any to perish, but all to come to repentance.

10 But the day of the Lord will come like a thief, and then the heavens will pass away with a loud noise, and the elements will be dissolved with fire, and the earth and everything that is done on it will be disclosed.

11 Since all these things are to be dissolved in this way, what sort of persons ought you to be in leading lives of holiness and godliness,

12 waiting for and hastening the coming of the day of God, because of which the heavens will be set ablaze and dissolved, and the elements will melt with fire?

13 But, in accordance with his promise, we wait for new heavens and a new earth, where righteousness is at home.

Final Exhortation and Doxology

14 Therefore, beloved, while you are waiting for these things, strive to be found by him at peace, without spot or blemish;

15 and regard the patience of our Lord as salvation. So also our beloved brother Paul wrote to you according to the wisdom given him,

16 speaking of this as he does in all his letters. There are some things in them hard to understand, which the ignorant and unstable twist to their own destruction, as they do the other scriptures.

17 You therefore beloved, since you are forewarned, beware that you are not carried away with the error of the lawless and lose your own stability.

18 But grow in the grace and knowledge of our Lord and Savior Jesus Christ. To him be the glory both now and to the day of eternity.

Amen.>

<Psalm 23

The Lord is my shepherd; there is nothing I shall not want.

2 He maketh me to lie down in green pastures: he leadeth me beside the still waters.

3 He restoreth my soul: he leadeth me in the paths of righteousness for his name's sake.

4 Yea, though I walk through the valley of the shadow of death, I will fear no evil: for thou art with me; thy rod and thy staff they comfort me.

5 Thou preparest a table before me in the presence of mine enemies: thou anointest my head with oil; my cup runneth over.

6 Surely goodness and mercy shall follow me all the days of my life: and I will dwell in the house of the Lord for ever.>

  chancho: <you vs yourself> Fran Tarkenton played for the Minnesota Vikings who were coached by Bud Grant.
Jan-24-07  square dance: the vikings of the 70s were a lot like the bills of the early 90s. ok, the vikings didnt lose four in a row, but they did lose four and were only favored the first time around in superbowl IV against the chiefs. besides that they lost to miami, pittsburg and oakland. miami and pittsburg were two of the greatest dynasties in NFL history and oakland had been a really good team for a long time, but had pittsburg in their way. its a shame that fran tarkenton is not that well known. he was a great qb. he even held the record for most rushing yards by a qb until randall cunningham broke it. so, yeah, he pretty much had em all up until the 90s.

  chancho: Gotta feel for poor Andy Roddick.
+1 -13 in his matches against Federer. I can't see him seriously being a threat to Roger. Andy's as good as he'll ever be, and it's just not good enough.
Jan-25-07  hitman84: Federer just blasted him off the court..

Shirov was Kasparov's bunny and Roddick is Federer's bunny.

Jan-25-07  kellmano: Major difference between Roddick and Shirov. I suspect Andy will come up with a witty quip about the fact, while Shirov will only scowl.
Jan-25-07  you vs yourself: Roddick-Federer: Gotta feel sorry for Roddick. After the 3 match points in shanghai and the win in the exhibition tournament, I thought maybe the gap is closing. But last night, it was just brutal.

  TheAlchemist: Roddick at least maintained a sense of humour (or was it cynicm?), when <he> challenged an out call for <Federer>'s ball (and it turned out to be in) in one of the last games in the third set.
Jan-25-07  you vs yourself: I read the transcript of his press conference. Roddick is pissed. I think it was cynicism. People weren't cheering for Roddick because he was winning sets or games but they were going nuts after he won points! That's how bad it got at one point.
Jan-25-07  YouRang: <Still, by the time he retired, only Unitas could say I held every record and I was the superbowl champion. Kind of like Pele, right?>

This was sort of my idea about suggesting Namath. He achieved sort of a legendary status in his time.

Sure, he only won one superbowl, but that was pretty big when only a few of them had been played. Also, his win was the first for the AFC, and it was a big upset. Adding to his status was his brash guarantee that his NY Jets would win.

He won several MVP awards, and for a number of years, he held the record for most yard passing in a season. His off-field and commercial "sex symbol" reputation added to his popularity. In short, his became a household name, even for people who otherwise knew nothing about football. Because of Namath's marketing value, the NFL chose a Jets game to be the first Monday Night Football game.

His stats and achievements pale compared to other QBs that have since come and gone, but I'm not sure that any player has ever attained the same level of wide-spread fame that Broadway Joe Namath once had.

Jan-25-07  you vs yourself: <YouRang> Joe Namath is a legend, no doubt. Everyone appreciates the significance of the Jets win against the colts. Still, it's one game and one which basically the Jets defense won. He should still get the credit for popularizing the NFL with that guarantee.

But when you're talking about Jordan, Pele, there's no grey area. Either you're the best or you're not. Namath was popular but he was never known as the best. The general consensus has always been, it's Montana or it's Unitas. Jordan and Pele are never mentioned 3rd; they're always mentioned first. If you have to look for people who say that Namath is Pele of football, then he's probably not.

Jan-25-07  YouRang: <you vs yourself> No argument from me. I'm just coming at it from the perspective of wide-spread name recognition, rather than performance.

You see, I'm not much of a soccer fan, but I've heard of Pele. At one time, if you asked me to name a soccer player, "Pele" would be the only name I could come up with (now I could name maybe 4; one of them Zidane because of the head-butt incident).

I'm guessing it's similar for Namath. Lots of people who know little about pro football would have heard of Namath, if no other football player.

Jan-25-07  you vs yourself: <YouRang> If it's name-recognition, then I agree. Joe Namath is kind of like John McEnroe. Eventhough Borg was the best player, McEnroe is much more popular for many of the same reasons that Joe was. He was the rebel fighting the establishment. When these players were doing things like guaranteeing wins, being brash and producing results it fascinated people and they started paying more attention to the player and the sport.
Jan-25-07  YouRang: When it comes down to performance, which QB is best all time?

Joe Montana is a pretty obvious choice, but if I had to pick, I'd go with Steve Young. His career passing stats were arguably comparable to or better than Montana's, even though he didn't always have as good a team. And Young was one of the best running QBs ever.

Of course, Montana has four rings to Young's one, but again, that's more of a team accomplishment than a player accomplishment.

Jan-25-07  you vs yourself: If it comes down to performance, I'd go with Peyton Manning after he wins a ring. His numbers are just mind boggling. 49 TDs, 121.4 QB rating, more career TDs than Montana already...

The only time Peyton looks like a human being is in the playoffs. If he wins it on feb 4, his resume is perfect and if he keeps piling up stats at a pace anywhere near what it is right now, he will go down as the best ever.

Jan-25-07  YouRang: Yeah, Manning's pretty good too. ;-)

Here are some comparison stats:

=== Manning
Passing: 3131/4890 64.0% 37586 yds
avg=7.7 td=275 int=139 (td/int=1.97, int%=2.84%)
Rushing: 269 for 701 yds & 13 tds avg=2.6

=== Young:
Passing: 2667/4149 64.3% 33124 yds
avg=8.0 td=232 int=107 (td/int=2.16, int%=2.58%)
Rushing: 722 for 4239 yds & 43 tds avg=5.9

I think Young's career stats are a bit better. However, I must say that this could change. Manning's numbers for the past 3 years in particular have been eye-popping.

Jan-25-07  you vs yourself: What website do you use for these stats?
Jan-25-07  YouRang: I like this one:
http://www.pro-football-reference.c...
Jan-25-07  square dance: <Joe Montana is a pretty obvious choice, but if I had to pick, I'd go with Steve Young.> young had a lot of poor performances in the playoffs. if we're talking about just regular season i think young is a great choice, but i would take manning.
Jan-25-07  you vs yourself: <YouRang> Thanks!
Jan-25-07  YouRang: <square dance> Young had a few less-than-stellar playoff games, but I didn't see any that were gosh-awful. e.g. In his last season (1998) he had 1 td and 3 ints in a 18-20 loss to Atlanta.

I would say that Manning has had some worse playoff games, including the first two this year (which the Colts fortunately won, despine 1 td & 5 ints). He also had poor games vs. New England in 2003 (1 td & 4 ints vs. New England in a 14-24 loss) and 2004 (0 td & 1 int in 3-20 loss).

Post-season career comparison stats:

== Manning
Pass: 265/437 3248 yds 60.6%
avg=7.4 td=17 int=14 (td/int=1.21 int%=3.2%)
Rush: 17 for 35 yds & 3 tds (avg=2.1)

== Young
Pass: 292/471 3326 yds 62.0%
avg=7.1 td=20 int=13 (td/int=1.53 int%=2.8%)
Rush: 96 for 585 yds & 8 tds (avg=6.1)

Again, I still go with Young, but Manning still has plenty of time to improve on his post-season stats.

Jan-25-07  you vs yourself: <YouRang> I bet the defenses Manning faced in playoffs are much tougher than what Steve Young had to face.

The Patriots team that Manning beat set a franchise record for the least points allowed. The Ravens defense this year was unbelievable. They were 1st in the league at everything. They won't allow 30-39, 300yds, 3TDs. So when he made that final drive that consumed nearly 7mins against that Ravens defense and at the end made it a 2 possessions game, it's one of those things that can't be measured in numbers. As for his other 2 ugly losses against pats, he was clueless. Belichick and the new england weather owned him. If Steve Young plays all his home games in a dome stadium and faced Belichick's defense in foxborough weather, I'm not sure he would've fared any better.

Jan-25-07  square dance: young started his playoff career on a playoff hardened team that had many veterans of several superbowl wins yet he continually performed poorly in big games against dallas and green bay aside from the playoffs following the 1994 season. to me that is a different set of circumstances than a guy who has been a starter since day one on a 3-13 team. btw, do you have the stats for qb fumbles? im working off of memory here, but i seem to remember him fumbling a few times in these crucial games. as far as manning, if you look at the last three years he's lost to the eventual superbowl champion each time. im not sure how much that should be held against him. for example, i dont recall edgerrin james having any big games against these teams.

  WannaBe: Joe played in Kansas city 1993 and 1994 season, in the play-offs:

1993, Wild Card Round, beat Pittsburgh 27-24 OT (game in Kansas City)

Division round, beat Houston 28-20 (game in Houston)

AFC Championship round, lost at Buffalo.

1994, Wild card, Kansas City lost in Miami.

Without looking at the box score, (and I can't find any on-line...) it would have to be the wild card game vs. Pittsburgh, or the Houston game.

  JointheArmy: Actually it was neither. I think chancho was thinking of the game between Elway and Montana on Monday Night Football in Denver where Montana led the Chiefs on a last second TD. That seemed to be his highlight moment with the Chiefs.
