<Jer 20:10-13

Jeremiah said:

"I hear the whisperings of many:
'Terror on every side!
Denounce!
Let us denounce him!'
All those who were my friends are on the watch for any misstep of mine.

Perhaps he'll be trapped; then we can prevail, and take our vengeance on him.

But the LORD is with me, like a mighty champion: my persecutors will stumble, they will not triumph.

In their failure, they will be put to utter shame, to lasting, unforgettable confusion.

O LORD of hosts, you who test the just, who probe mind and heart, let me witness the vengeance you take on them, for to you, I have entrusted my cause.

Sing to the LORD,
praise the LORD,
for he has rescued the life of the poor
from the power of the wicked!">

<1 Corinthians 13

13 If I speak in the tongues of men or of angels, but do not have love, I am only a resounding gong or a clanging cymbal. 2 If I have the gift of prophecy and can fathom all mysteries and all knowledge, and if I have a faith that can move mountains, but do not have love, I am nothing. 3 If I give all I possess to the poor and give over my body to hardship that I may boast, but do not have love, I gain nothing.

4 Love is patient, love is kind. It does not envy, it does not boast, it is not proud. 5 It does not dishonor others, it is not self-seeking, it is not easily angered, it keeps no record of wrongs. 6 Love does not delight in evil but rejoices with the truth. 7 It always protects, always trusts, always hopes, always perseveres.

8 Love never fails. But where there are prophecies, they will cease; where there are tongues, they will be stilled; where there is knowledge, it will pass away.

9 For we know only in part, and we prophesy only in part; 10 but when the complete comes, the partial will come to an end. 11 When I was a child, I spoke like a child, I thought like a child, I reasoned like a child; when I became an adult, I put an end to childish ways. 12 For now we see in a mirror, dimly, but then we will see face to face. Now I know only in part; then I will know fully, even as I have been fully known. 13 And now faith, hope, and love abide, these three; and the greatest of these is love.>

<The Promise of the Lord's Coming

The Second Letter of Peter

Chapter 3

1 This is now, beloved, the second letter I am writing to you; in them I am trying to arouse your sincere intention by reminding you

2 that you should remember the words spoken in the past by the holy prophets, and the commandment of the Lord and Savior spoken through your apostles.

3 First of all you must understand this, that in the last days scoffers will come, scoffing and indulging their own lusts

4 and saying, Where is the promise of his coming? For ever since our ancestors died, all things continue as they were from the beginning of creation!?

5 They deliberately ignore this fact, that by the word of God heavens existed long ago and an earth was formed out of water and by means of water,

6 through which the world of that time was deluged with water and perished.

7 But by the same word the present heavens and earth have been reserved for fire, being kept until the day of judgment and destruction of the godless.

8 But do not ignore this one fact, beloved, that with the Lord one day is like a thousand years, and a thousand years are like one day.

9 The Lord is not slow about his promise, as some think of slowness, but is patient with you, not wanting any to perish, but all to come to repentance.

10 But the day of the Lord will come like a thief, and then the heavens will pass away with a loud noise, and the elements will be dissolved with fire, and the earth and everything that is done on it will be disclosed.

11 Since all these things are to be dissolved in this way, what sort of persons ought you to be in leading lives of holiness and godliness,

12 waiting for and hastening the coming of the day of God, because of which the heavens will be set ablaze and dissolved, and the elements will melt with fire?

13 But, in accordance with his promise, we wait for new heavens and a new earth, where righteousness is at home.

Final Exhortation and Doxology

14 Therefore, beloved, while you are waiting for these things, strive to be found by him at peace, without spot or blemish;

15 and regard the patience of our Lord as salvation. So also our beloved brother Paul wrote to you according to the wisdom given him,

16 speaking of this as he does in all his letters. There are some things in them hard to understand, which the ignorant and unstable twist to their own destruction, as they do the other scriptures.

17 You therefore beloved, since you are forewarned, beware that you are not carried away with the error of the lawless and lose your own stability.

18 But grow in the grace and knowledge of our Lord and Savior Jesus Christ. To him be the glory both now and to the day of eternity.

Amen.>

~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
<Psalm 23
The Lord is my shepherd; there is nothing I shall not want.
2 He maketh me to lie down in green pastures: he leadeth me beside the still waters.
3 He restoreth my soul: he leadeth me in the paths of righteousness for his name's sake.
4 Yea, though I walk through the valley of the shadow of death, I will fear no evil: for thou art with me; thy rod and thy staff they comfort me.
5 Thou preparest a table before me in the presence of mine enemies: thou anointest my head with oil; my cup runneth over.
6 Surely goodness and mercy shall follow me all the days of my life: and I will dwell in the house of the Lord for ever.>
  WannaBe: <YouRang> No, Tampa Bay was led by Jon 'Chucky' Gruden, when they won the Super Bowl, one year after he left the Raiders.
And his team beat/spanked the Raiders.
  tpstar: <JointheArmy> Your example is an acronym; an anagram uses the same letters to create new words, like Elista = is late.
If they win the Super Bowl, we'll have to find a new acronym. =)
Jan-22-07  you vs yourself: Wow, what a game that was! I never thought I'd see a better football game than USC vs Texas, 2006. But this game is the best ever. That 4th quarter was unreal. Manning came up huge in the second half.
Brady gets too much credit with this clutch stuff and his teammates get no credit. He threw 2 game ending interceptions in the last 4 playoff games. It would've been 3 if not for the amazing Troy Brown. If the game is tied and he has good field position, Brady is amazing. But when his team is down, he makes mistakes like most QBs. Anyway, I'm saying this because I got sick of watching ESPN portray Brady as some kind of God in clutch situations.
As for the superbowl, it's my Bears against my idol, Peyton Manning. If it's any other year against any other team, I'd be rooting for the Bears. But this year, I'm rooting for Peyton Manning to win the super bowl.
  WannaBe: <you vs yourself: Wow, what a game... better football game than USC vs Texas, 2006...>
You obviously didn't see the USC vs UCLA 2006 edition. :-))
Jan-23-07  positionalgenius: <wannabe>Blasphemy! *feeling ill*
Jan-23-07  Larsker: I saw the semis. Chicago had a clear home advantage in the cold weather.
How is it decided where the semis are played? Do any of you guys know? Both home teams won this time around.
Jan-23-07  YouRang: <Larsker><How is it decided where the semis are played?>
The home advantage in the semis (and throughout the playoffs) goes to the higher-seeded team. Seeding is based on the win-loss record during the regular season, and may involve tie-breakers.
This year, in the NFC, the Bears had the best record, and were thus guaranteed home-field advantage in the playoffs.
In the AFC, the San Diego Chargers were the top seeded team, but they were knocked out at home by the Patriots. If the Chargers had won, the semi-final would have seen the Colts playing in San Diego.
Jan-23-07  YouRang: BTW, I think there is one exception to the seeding rule I described above.
In each conference (i.e. AFC or NFC), there are 4 divisions (East, West, North, South). The teams that make it to the playoffs are the 4 division champions, and the 2 other teams with the best overall record (these 2 teams are call 'wildcard' teams).
So, the seeding goes like this:
1. Div Champ with best record.
2. Div Champ with 2nd best record.
3. Div Champ with 3rd best record.
4. Div Champ with 4th best record.
5. Wildcard with best record
6. Other wildcard.
The first round of playoffs has:
A. team#3 hosts team#6
B. team#4 hosts team#5
(team#1 and team#2 get a bye)
Note, for example, that team#4 will have home advantage against team#5, even though it is possible that team#5 to have a better record.
Jan-23-07  Larsker: <you vs yourself: Wow, what a game that was! I never thought I'd see a better football game than USC vs Texas, 2006. But this game is the best ever.> Really? Then I'm happy I saw it. I don't more see than a couple every year.
Some of the old Joe Montana, 49'ers games were classics too.
Jan-23-07  Larsker: <YouRang> Thanks for answering. One more question: Who's considered the Pelé of football? Montana?
Jan-23-07  chessmoron: <Larsker> You sound surprised that USC vs Texas 2006 BCS championship game was the best ever comment. I wonder why? =D
Jan-23-07  chessmoron: <Larsker> Without a doubt the future hall of fame and winner of "Dancing with the Stars," Jerry Rice.
Jan-24-07  YouRang: <Larsker> <One more question: Who's considered the Pelé of football? Montana?>
Hmm, hard to say. I gather that you're talking about someone who is not only good and successful, but has attained sort of a legendary status.
Perhaps Montana. I might have suggested Joe Namath (although perhaps even legendary status fades with time).
  chancho: Terry Bradshaw has four super bowl rings just like Montana, and yet Montana is considered the better quarterback by some. Why is that?
Jan-24-07  square dance: montana gets more credit than bradshaw because the 49'ers were an offensive team and the steelers were more of defensive team.
Jan-24-07  YouRang: I always thought Bradshaw was an outstanding quarterback. I think he doesn't get as much credit as Montana because..
(A) His team (the Pittsburgh Steelers) were more renowned for their defense (the "Steel Curtain").
(B) The Steelers had other notable players on offense, like John Stallworth, Lynn Swann, and Franco Harris. (Of course, Montana had Jerry Rice and Roger Craig.)
  WannaBe: 'Broadway' Joe has only won one Super Bowl, granted, it was one of the bigger upsets in the history of the game, plus his personal guarantee.
Later years, he was seen on the sidelines ogling at a female reporter, on national TV, ESPN, I believe...
Who then went to rehab.
<chancho> Don't know, I've never considered Bradshaw to be better/worse than Montana...
I saw a lot of the games that Joe played in, I was not able to see Terry play, except in a few old clips...
Maybe Joe is considered better, due to the fact that a town in Montana renamed itself Joe. http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Ismay%...
Jan-24-07  you vs yourself: It's not all about winning superbowl anyway. Does anyone seriously think Trent Dilfer is better than Dan Marino? Teams win and teams lose.
As for Bradshaw, besides his team being known for defense his stats are not up there with the best either: for his career, he has nearly as many interceptions as TDs.
Jan-24-07  YouRang: <you vs yourself> Good points. And yes, Bradshaw's stats are not as good as Montana's. However, he compiled some very bad stats (particularly interceptions) in the early part of his career.
I just checked this: In the 4 years that the Steelers won the Superbowl, his TD/interception stats were 79/52 (20-13 in postseason); not too bad. Still, Montana's were clearly better for his 4 superbowl years: 91/40 (32/10 postseason).
Jan-24-07  you vs yourself: <Larsker: Who's considered the Pelé of football? Montana?> Pele has numerous scoring records and world cups. But Montana doesn't have the records; he is only known for performing at his absolute best in superbowls.
Montana has a special place in team sports. If you absolutely have to win a playoff game and you're down by 4 points*, whose hands would you put the football in? The answer 99 out of 100 times is Joe "cool" Montana. He's known for being cool under pressure. Maybe Jordan in basketball is comparable in that regard, but the thing with Jordan is, he also has the dominating stats.
Jordan, in his peak, would've carried the basketball team to playoffs even with a mediocre team. But football is a complex team sport where there are so many nuances that are not under a QB's control: one easy example is defense. Once you're in the playoffs though, there's no QB you would rather have than Joe Montana.
The short answer is: Joe Montana is not the Pele of football. Dan Marino is the guy with the most dominating stats but he never won the super bowl; Joe is the guy with most super bowl MVPs but he doesn't have the dominating stats. Maybe Johnny Unitas can be compared to Pele or Jordan. By the time(1974) Unitas retired, he held every major passing record and also won the superbowl.
*If it was 3, I know Brady and Vinatieri's fans would bring down that percentage.
Jan-24-07  you vs yourself: ps: I said Marino has the dominating stats and said the same thing about Unitas. If you don't follow football, it would sound contradictory. But Unitas set all the records and Marino shattered them by the late '90s. Still, by the time he retired, only Unitas could say I held every record and I was the superbowl champion. Kind of like Pele, right?
Jan-24-07  Larsker: I don't follow football as intensely as I follow soccer.
In soccer, there's a broad consensus about the very best:
1) Pelé (Brazil)
2) Maradona (Argentina)
3) Probably Beckenbauer (Germany)
The real discussions only start concerning # 3 and onwards. The French would yell for Platini, The English for Bobby Charlton and so on.
Pelé and Maradona are very different. Pelé is calm and does a lot for charity, etc. Maradona is half-mad or so it seems at times, drug problems, etc. A pair like Capablanca and Fischer.
Jan-24-07  square dance: <ps: I said Marino has the dominating stats and said the same thing about Unitas. If you don't follow football, it would sound contradictory. But Unitas set all the records and Marino shattered them by the late '90s.> no, marino broke all of fran tarkenton's records. he had all the records, but was 0-3 in the superbowl.
Jan-24-07  you vs yourself: <square dance> Really? Never heard of him. Must be that 0-3 thing. Maybe Fran broke Unitas records because I remember Unitas as the first player ever to pass for 40,000 passing yards. Since JU played 'til '74 and Marino started in the '80s and I know no other prolific QB in between, I assumed that Marino broke Unitas' records.
