Jun-11-17  WinKing: Yeah the list seems ok now. They were listed twice though. Maybe the software caught the error & cleaned it up. A lot of mysterious things going on lately.

Is anyone there? Does anyone in charge ever look at this site?

chessgames.com: Sometimes we forget to disable the live-broadcast software the night before. That always causes a little havoc, but not as bad of a mistake as forgetting to turn it back on.

Hopefully not. What is the point?

chessgames.com: Here's a little chess composition task that perhaps somebody would like to help us with.

You see, we're working on a new chess viewer to replace pgn4web. It will resemble pgn4web superficially, but contain some of the features that make Chess Viewer Deluxe so much more desirable, like the ability to manipulate pieces.

So to test this software, I am trying to come up with a short game that contains all of these characteristics:

(1) a capture
(2) a short castling
(3) a long castling
(4) en passant
(5) an underpromotion
(6) a check
(7) a checkmate

The game doesn't have to make any sense whatsoever as long as it is legal moves. It's not critical that it's super-short, but it's fun to try to make it as short as possible.

So who's up for the challenge?

I think I got everything. Hopefully it's in a good enough format.

Jun-18 is the birthday of GM Andrei Volokitin.

I would like to suggest <21. ?> in A Volokitin vs Mamedyarov, 2012 for PotD on that day. I think this is one of the greatest moves in chess history, and I'm actually surprised it wasn't used as a Sunday puzzle previously.

Tabanus: <CG> How to "deal" with R Cremorne? His real name was Richard Dawson, but the chess reports have no games with that name - they use (and have games of) both "Lord Cremorne" and (later) "Earl of Dartrey". There are probably also other such cases.

chessgames.com: Just my opinion (to be taken with the same weight as any biographer) is that we use whatever name is commonly used in chess literature, and talk of other monickers in the biography section.

By way of example -- Expanding a well known name is fine--e.g. Duke Karl becomes Duke Karl von Braunschweig. But even if we located a first, middle, and last name for the Duke we shouldn't change his name. His short-name should forever be "Duke Karl." His long name should be whatever we deem appropriate.

Tabanus: But Richard Dawson has two common names in chess literature: Lord Cremorne and Earl of Dartrey. I'd like to call him Richard Dawson, but search on Cremorne or Dartrey won't find him then. If we call him Lord Cremorne, search on Dawson or Dartrey won't find him.

chessgames.com: That's an issue which should, in theory, be handled by the software. For example, to allow players to have "alternate names" that could handle people who go by different names, alternate spellings, or simply marriage.

Tabanus: CG, that's what I wanted to hear! I suppose it's a lot of work though to figure it out, and to monitor it. In the "R. Cremorne" (which is dead wrong) case, perhaps "Richard Dawson" after all, as a temporary solution. See e. g. http://www.edochess.ca/players/p266....
