| Aug-31-17 | | Boomie: One clue is the MistyBeach viewer uses Java. So the problem is not totally about Java. The apparent war between Microsoft and Oracle is behind this. Java is a security risk? Please. If history has taught us anything, it's that everything is a security risk. Any system can be hacked. |

Big Pawn: Part 8
The Iliad
Thomas Hobbes Translation
<
And Agamemnon only for them grieve,
They my assistance wish for shall in vain.
This said, Achilles threw the sceptre down
That stuck all over was with nails of gold;
Hobbes1839: 325And Nestor rose, of Pyle that wore the crown,Wise and sweet orator and captain old.
[6]
His words like honey dropped from his tongue. Two ages he in battle honour gain’d.
For all that while he youthful was and strong, Hobbes1839: 240And with the third age now in Pyle he reign’d. What grief t’ Achæa coming is, said he,
O Gods, what joy to Priam and his seed,
How glad will all the Trojans be to see
You two, that all the rest in pow’r exceed,
Hobbes1839: 245With your own hands shed one another’s blood! I elder am, do then as I advise.
For I conversed have with men as good,
That yet my counsel never did despise.
Perithous and Dryas were great men,
Hobbes1839: 250And Polyphemus and Exadius,
Such as for strength I ne’er shall see again; And so were Cæneus, and Theseus,
The strongest of mankind were these, and slew The strongest of wild beasts that haunt the wood. Hobbes1839: 255These strong men I convers’d withal and knew; And with them also I did what I could.
With these no other could contend in fight.
Yet they from Pyle thought fit to call me forth Far off; nor ever did my counsel slight.
Hobbes1839: 260Think not therefore my counsel nothing worth. Atrides take not from him, though you can,
The damsel which the Greeks have given him.
Forbear the king, Pelides. For the man
Whom Jove hath crown’d is made of Jove a limb. Hobbes1839: 265Though you be strong, and on a Goddess got, Atrides is before you in command.
Atrides, be but you to peace once brought,
T’ appease Achilles I will take in hand,
Who is (while we are lying here) our wall.
Hobbes1839: 270To this Atrides answered again,
I nothing can deny of this at all.
But he amongst us thinks he ought to reign,
And give the law to all as he thinks fit.
But I am certain that shall never be.
Hobbes1839: 275He well can fight; the Gods have granted it, But they ne’er taught him words of infamy.
Then interrupting him, Achilles said,
I were a wretch and nothing worth indeed,
If I whatever you command obey’d.
Hobbes1839: 280I will no more to what you say take heed. > |

 | | WannaBe: Here is what I think...
CG.com removed the two Chess Viewer Deluxe (II) objects from their site/folders. (Or the location of the folder got renamed/moved). But on the drop down, or if you had already set it as your viewer of choice, the object Java Runtime tries to call (a .jar file) is not found. It is my strong suspicion that CG.com made some change and did not follow through completely. |

| Sep-01-17 | | thegoodanarchist: Hi Daniel,
IMO the chess viewer issue is more important than PA's flame war with <BP>. I encourage you to fix the viewer issue first. As for <Party Animal>, have you tried the ignore feature? |

 | | chessgames.com: I posted a summary of the technical situation on the puzzle of the day, since that's where most people were encountering the error first: A Blees vs F Vallejo Pons, 1997 (kibitz #18). In short, if you used to have CVD or CVD II set, you'll probably find that you are now set to CVD2. If not, you'll have to set it again with the pulldown. |

 | | chessgames.com: <IMO the chess viewer issue is more important than PA's flame war with <BP>.> To put it mildly. I've been working 14 hours a day on improving chess viewing functionality here and two users who probably haven't seen a chess game here in the last year think that this website revolves around their personal strife. <Party Animal (etc.)> You know very well why you were placed on probation as you receive a personalized message when you try to post. It was a very short suspension. Don't do the action which triggered the suspension and you won't be suspended again. Also do consider the "ignore" option. You need not ever read a word Big Pawn ever types again. Finally let me say one more thing, applicable to several members here: If you <quote> another user using language which may trigger an infraction, YOU are equally liable to receive the infraction. You've been warned. |

| Sep-01-17 | | AylerKupp: <Party Animal> In case you did not know, this page (or any other page) is not the way to report users that you feel have violated <chessgames.com>'s posting guidelines. If you look down to the right-hand side at the bottom of every page, there is a Blow the whistle link which allows you to report any posts that you feel violate these guidelines. Only if you do this will they act on them. But here's a suggestion, threatening lawsuits is probably not the way to get <chessgames.com>'s attention. |

 | | chessgames.com: <OK, this might be a new one. A couple of weeks ago whenever I entered the <chessgames.com> Home page or whenever I click on the menu bar to go to the home page I get transferred to the bottom of the Home page rather than the top. Weird?> We're making some changes with our page headers but to toss you to the end of the page would be extremely weird behavior. I'm not sure what to say. It almost smacks of malware. If possible, try it on another browser on your device and see what happens. It's a long shot, but look at your location bar once you've come to the site, even if you typed the location by hand, and make sure it then looks normal (i.e. www.chessgames.com with no extra stuff after it). I've heard of malware that appends things to URLs and could have side-effects like that. |

| Sep-01-17 | | AylerKupp: <chessgames.com> Thanks for your suggestion on my "weird" end-of-Home-page problem. I checked my URL link and it doesn't have any extra stuff at the end of "http//www/chessgames.com" except the usual "/". I then entered "chessgames.com" in IE's search bar and I got the same result. And going to the Home page after I've gone to another chessgames.com page results in the same thing. You missed that I had tried both Chrome and Firefox and they don't show the problem. So I'm sure it’s IE-related. Which is strange since Windows XP has not been supported by Microsoft for years so I'm reasonably certain that it was not the result of a Windows upgrade. It could be due to malware but I update my virus checker (Norton) regularly with the latest virus signatures and run it afterwards and no problems of this type have ever been indicated. And why would any hacker bother to release a virus that affect IE v.8 which has been obsolete for years? Equally interesting is that I decided to try to go to chessgames.com on my wife's computer which has the same version of Windows XP and IE. On her computer the chessgames.com page wouldn't even load! So I suppose I should consider myself lucky that I only get sent to the bottom of the Home page. Again, thanks for trying. Now go get some sleep! |

| Sep-01-17 | | thegoodanarchist: <AylerKupp>
I suspect that you had a CPU stack overflow error during a web browser auto-refresh. These happen within microseconds, so you might not have noticed a sequencing synchronization disruption in the underlying machine language configuration protocol. Next time, I suggest an "option+command+control+halt" input during the anti-phase excursion of your protocol host. Then initiate a <manual> dereferenced framing rejection of your asynchronous command interrupt. (Hint: If you try to do this *automatically* instead of manually you might corrupt your SRAM reboot capability, and will then have to run a de-optimization subroutine of the anti-hosting protocol, in order to avoid the dreaded blue screen of death. That happened to me once, and the next 3 hours of hell you DON'T want to know about...). Anyway, immediately after that your machine should automatically reconfigure for more efficient parallel processing, especially if you are running a dual core multi-processor. If you see a non-static reconfiguration error during this time, expect a command line prompt. Just enter the standard ctrl+alt+g+% when the alpha-refresh screen materializes. You will see the very common double ampersand querry. You know what to do from there.
My work here is done - I know you will make it good. |
