chessgames.com: <Party Animal> Your question that I deleted, the one that read <What about calling it Big Pawn's flame war???> (instead of your flame war)

OK, here's the answer: I don't care what we call it, just keep it off this forum and game/player/tournament pages. Furthermore don't address specific people you have a problem with on this support forum. If you really cannot stand his posts, use your ignore list, otherwise I regard you as equally culpable.

Sep-04-17  technical draw: Hello, CG.com. I have a good question. Can someone pay for membership here with an American Express gift card? You can buy them at Walgreen's.
Sep-04-17  Mr. President: <chessgames.com>

As we continue to monitor <Hurricane Irma>, families should make sure their <Disaster Supply Kits> are ready today...

Sep-04-17  technical draw: <Mr. President> The tiny island of Anguilla protects the US territories Virgin Islands and Puerto Rico. If Irma hits Anguilla it will cause the storm to veer northward and making a less direct hit on the Virgin Islands and Puerto Rico.

However if a category 4 or 5 hurricane hits Anguilla directly then God have mercy on the people of that Island.

Has there been any news regarding the Chessgames Challenge? It's been several months since I last asked, and over 7 months since I first asked about this site's unique group chess activity.

chessgames.com: <Can someone pay for membership here with an American Express gift card? You can buy them at Walgreen's.> I would assume it would work because our credit card processor does do American Express. In theory it shouldn't matter if it's a gift card or not. I can't say I guarantee it, because I've never been aware of that specific circumstance.

<Chessgames Challenge> We do want to get one started but the old format of one person against a thousand computers I believe is a thing of the past. Computers are just too good these days; It's like paying a GM to jump into a piranha tank. That still leaves us with honor-system no-computer games, chess variants, and a few other ideas.

chessgames.com: <Irma> We're watching her very closely. If CG support is unavailable this coming weekend it probably means we're temporarily stranded without power or communications. If CG itself is unavailable it means our ISP got hit bad, which happened once before in 2005 (see https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Hurri...).

We're praying for the people it hits (wherever it makes landfall) and meanwhile backing up the site and sending copies far far away for safekeeping.

I have no idea how or if this would work, probably isn't practical, but I proposed in the past that it would be prohibited to post computer analysis on the game analysis page.

People could still use computers (how to stop it?), but at least the page wouldn't be filled with long lines of engine analysis.

Domdaniel: <saffuna> I don't think it would make much difference. You'd still see long lines of engine analysis, but with all engine identifiers removed.

saffuna: Unfortunately you're probably right, but even I can tell computer lines. Maybe a limit on the number of plies which can be posted?

Nope, you're right.

Too bad, the question of whether a large group of expert but not master level players can defeat a GM is interesting. (I remember the Kasparov/World game years ago as interesting.)

ICCF: about 85% draws, see e. g. https://www.iccf.com/event?id=52852 and https://www.iccf.com/event?id=37632. That does not stop them ;)

Domdaniel: <CG> Irma is not Irma La Douce (obscure movie reference). Take care.

BTW, the phrase "on the Fritz" is kinda ambiguous in this context, isn't it?

Domdaniel: <CG> Another point... is it possible, while the world cup continues, to show a list on the tournament page of players who have been eliminated? Or, conversely, those still in the chase?

The 'all participants' format is not very well suited to a knockout.

chessgames.com: Agreed the list of names is a "punt" when we have no other way of showing the data. Ideally we could display the ongoing bracket, starting with 64 pairings, then 32, etc. But since we don't have that programmatically designed yet, you can always visit Wikipedia (https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Chess...) where chess fans are filling it in by hand.

WannaBe: Someone awhile back mentioned sub-threads for Rogoff page, this idea can work for a knock out tourn.

Each subsequent page is the next round, main page, 64. Page 2 or sub thread, 32, etc...

offramp: <chessgames.com> You could have a game of <Kriegspiel>. Teams White and Black would only see their own moves. Only you and some other honest kibitzers would see the entire game and say if moves are illegal and the other usual announcements. https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Krieg...

chessgames.com: I've known of Kriegspiel but never assessed if it would be any fun to play or not. It seems very odd.

Have you ever heard of "three check chess"? Of all the whacky chess variants, I find it really preserves the spirit of the game. Wikipedia claims that Karpov is a master of it. Sadly I think there are powerful 3-check-chess computers available.

Oh, the live game started, gotta run ...

chessgames.com: Yeah, I see the issue. I'm sure Sargon is just slavishly making changes thrown at him—we'll find out who the pitcher is.

This is the same reply as the one you gave on the 4th of June (chessgames.com chessforum) - over three months ago. Has there been any progress regarding these "honor-system no-computer games, chess variants, and a few other ideas"?

Sep-06-17  jphamlore: <chessgames.com> Prayers for you for Irma. And thanks for the immediate correction for the result of

P Nikolic vs Gelfand, 1991

which was game 2 of their Candidates match that cycle. You do great work with these games even if they have no comments, because this game's ending is included in endgame books. Thanks for helping raise the standard of play in the game.

offramp: When I go to the chess forums page Recent Chessforum Activity some forums have previews and some do not. Some have three dots: "...".

If that is connected with the Team challenge, could it be stopped?

Sep-07-17  hoodrobin: <chessgames.com> From Italy I understand it is not about <Irma la Douce>. Hold on and keep going, my friends! :-)

chessgames.com: <If that is connected with the Team challenge, could it be stopped?> It is, and we could, except that it still exists as a kind of "picket fence" and presumably the people who have it set that way intentionally.
