| Oct-03-17 | | MuzioFan: <chessgames.com> I just noticed, but one and a half month ago we passed the mark where it has been 24 months since the previous Chessgames Challenge started, on the 13th of August 2015. Before this there seems to have been a challenge yearly or even more frequently. I feel kind of stupid for asking this since you have given a non-answer about computer chess and GMs for the past 8 months or so, but is there any news about the next Chessgames Challenge? |

 | | chessgames.com: ♔ IMPORTANT SITE ENHANCEMENT ♔
We've recently unlocked a very important facet of our new Stockfish integration, something we call the Analysis Laboratory. From your own private Analysis Laboratory you can request quick or long evaluations of positions based on FEN or PGN. Meanwhile, the game pages will now display buttons (to premium members) which allow access to similar features. Just for example, if you wonder what would have happened if Reshevsky took Fischer's knight in Fischer vs Reshevsky, 1958 from this position click for larger viewYou can click on <COMPUTER MOVE ANALYSIS> and then enter "11...Kxe6" on the move/variation field. After a short wait you'll get the answer: <1) mate-in-6 (20 ply) 12.Qd5+ Kf5 13.f4 Nc6 14.g4+ Kxg4 15.Qg2+ Kh4 16.Qg5+ Kh3 17.Qg3#> You can do the same thing for entire games, although of course that will take much longer. When a game is fully analyzed by Stockfish a note will appear under the diagram <A COMPUTER ANNOTATED SCORE OF THIS GAME IS AVAILABLE. [CLICK HERE]>. If you prefer to see Stockfish analysis in all games that contain it, you can go into your Preferences Page and choose the option <Show computer annotations when available.> A like that reads "Laboratory" is now a default setting in the customizable menu-bar at the top of the screen. However if you have already customized yours you might want to visit Menu Configuration Page to activate it. This is a brand new area of the site so regard it as a "beta test" for the time being. You can read more about it here: Premium Membership Help Page. We have lots of ideas for improvements, but meanwhile if you have any difficulty in using it or encounter any problems, please let us know. Thanks and enjoy! |

 | | chessgames.com: BTW: I just fixed a silly bug that had all Stockfish full-game evaluations being ascribed to my own account, <chessgames.com> — so I'd be the one to see the results, I'd have it in my queue, I'd pay for the "Fuel" to do the evaluation. if you can imagine, while I was testing everything I never noticed that problem. When I saw an extraneous request to evaluate a game I was confused and canceled it — so that means somebody out there (no idea who) asked for a full game evaluation which was terminated by myself. I'm sorry about that. Try it again and it will work. In other words, you ask for an evaluation (I'd start with 1 Fuel/move) and then it will automatically appear in your queue on your Analysis Laboratory. It can't tell you when the game will be finished but the constantly changing position diagrams will give you some idea of how quickly it's moving through the game. It intentionally takes long (eight times as long, to be exact) when it encounters what it believes to be critical junctures in the game, e.g the move that lost. It also spends extra time on the final position if it doesn't end in mate. |

So it was probably me Daniel
in case you were curious. I just wanted to see what it would produce. |

 | | chessgames.com: <WinKing> Glad to hear it. As it turned out somebody else did a quick evaluation of the game: Khalifman vs D Yuffa, 2016 [analysis] To my surprise it revealed what I don't believe anybody mentioned, that White threw a win away with 42.Rxb5? when instead 42.Kd3 is winning after <...Rd7+ 43.Kc3 Rc7+ 44.Rc5 Rb7 45.Kd4 Rb8 46.Rd5 Kg7 +- +4.35 (31 ply)> |

 | | chessgames.com: We just reset everybody's Fuel to be 2000 (full tank!) |
|
Oct-06-17
 | | WannaBe: <chessgames.com> I was playing around with the Analysis feature, and I selected 4 for my Fuel. How difficult, it would be, to have an analysis (time remaining, or time progressed) clock? I know mine was only one minute, but if someone put in for 5 or 10 minutes, and lose track of time... Just a thought. Not a big deal. |
|

 | | WannaBe: <chessgames.com> Another question regarding Analysis... If I go to the laboratory page: Analysis Laboratory I see my (1) Position Analysis 1996 Fuel, (2) Game Analysis 1996 Fuel, (3) Move Analysis 1996 Fuel. If I go to a game, say: I Nepomniachtchi vs Svidler, 2014 then Full Game Analysis, I have 637 Fuel. And the drop down only option is 'intensive evaluation' regardless if I select 1, 2, 4 Fuel/move Why/What are the differences?? Or specifically, Laboratory -> Option 2, versus game -> Full Game Analysis? |
|
Oct-06-17
 | | chessgames.com: <WannaBe> Those are some good questions that are not properly documented yet. Here's how it works:
If you go to a game page, and choose an analysis, the results will be shared with ALL members, for all perpetuity. Because of this, we decided it shouldn't be a "matter of style" which setting you request. All shared analysis is "intensive." The options have these meanings:
<Intensive Evaluation> — only comment when the evaluation changes more than 0.5 points. (Also provide an evaluation number on any move following a comment.) <Broad Evaluation> — only comment when the evaluation changes more than 1.0 point. (Again, also provide an evaluation number on the move following a comment.) <Blunders Only> — only comment when the evaluation changes more than 1.5 points. (And the move following.) <Annotate Each Move> — is only a slight misnomer; it makes a comment any time the #1 chosen move is not picked, or if a move is played regarded as at least 1 centipawn worse than its computations. So that's the difference: if you go the official game page, you are sharing your analysis. If not, it's just for your personal review. Note that you can paste in PGN from a famous game into the Full Game Analysis, but you can also paste your private PGN, say from a personal game. This is the first time that you'll be able to see your own game on CG without going through the bureaucracy of having a game uploaded. Also note, that regardless of whether you choose "Each move" or "Blunders only" or anything in between, the same computation time (and therefore the same Fuel) will be used. What this means is, over time, more and more games will be annotated by Stockfish, both by the administration and by the members. You can currently see the list here: games annotated by Stockfish Because we never want people to replace good analysis with superficial analysis, the system will not allow you to do an analysis that is quicker than the one already in the database. We know that a lot of people don't want computer evaluations, or at least don't want them foisted on them, so we do not automatically show Stockfish's opinions when you visit one of those games. However, some people might actually want that, so to accommodate we added a new preference option on your Preferences Page that reads <Show computer annotations when available.>. BTW another feature related to the Analysis Laboratory is the new preference option <Use figurine notation (♔ ♖ ♘ etc.) where possible> — when you select that it won't do very much, but it will present some of the Stockfish analysis in figurine style. I know this is a lot to take in all at once, but thanks for your interest in the new feature, we're still putting the final polish on it. Have fun! |
|
Oct-06-17
 | | WannaBe: Thank you for the response!
1. I actually despise or actually hate figurine. Prefer just plain old letters. 2. I plugged a PGN game of mine, and the analysis was: hahahahahah hahahahahah hahahahaha What does that mean!? |

 | | chessgames.com: Some of you might wonder why Stockfish is so liberal when it comes to handing out the "?" notes but never gives any move a "!" From the docs at Analysis Laboratory — <We have programmed our game analysis feature to partially endorse Hübner's approach (https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Chess...) in that <There are no exclamation marks, as they serve no useful purpose. The best move should be mentioned in the analysis in any case; an exclamation mark can only serve to indicate the personal excitement of the commentator.> As Stockfish has yet to show the slightest emotion over even the most beautiful moves, we have no way to convey exclamation marks.> |

Oct-07-17
 | | chessgames.com: <How difficult, it would be, to have an analysis (time remaining, or time progressed) clock?> We should do that, yes. For the really long evaluations, the way to eat popcorn and wait for the big countdown is to go to your Analysis Laboratory and look at the descriptions next to the jobs you're running: <1.0 hour evaluation. (00:51:01 elapsed.)> |
|
Oct-07-17
 | | chessgames.com: By the way, the next stage is a "play against Stockfish" feature that you can start at any position (including the normal starting position.) I think Stockfish even has Fischerandom support but I'm a little hazy on the details. |
