 | | WannaBe: <chessgames.com> If you go to my laboratory page, and you will see a request 2017-10-12 at 17:29:52 60.0 second evaluation (00:04:10 elapsed) White to move.
I am going to leave it there to help you diagnose/trace down the issue, why is it still going when it is 60-second request. Feel free to terminate it whenever you wish. |

 | | chessgames.com: HI WannaBe:
For starters, when bad FEN/PGN is received, the system should automatically terminate the error rather than leaving it on your queue for you to terminate manually. Eventually it will do that, at least some of the time, but meanwhile perhaps it's best like this for debugging. Now about your problem, I think the misunderstanding is that where it says "move analysis" it doesn't mean "move number" analysis, it wants to see an actual move, like "49...Kg6" — so what you're actually asking when you want to know White's best 50th move is, "What is White's best reply to 49...Kg6?" where 49...Kg6 is the move actually played in the game. If you go to it in "puzzle mode" (i.e. set to move 50) it looks like this: Xie Jun vs Hort, 1995 — notice that when you click on "computer analysis" the move 49...Kg6 is already stuffed into the field. Now you need only click the Request Analysis button. (For better or worse, that makes our daily puzzle a breeze for computer hounds, as the answer is always a click away.) There's another way to get the job done: if you go to Olga, position yourself on Black's 49th move and click the ENGINE link — you'll automatically get an analysis of that position, i.e. White's best 50th move. (Sure enough, White missed a win.) All that being said, there's no reason why the software shouldn't be able to recognize simple requests like 50.? or 49...? to mean "What is the best move at that point?" I can work on making it behave that way. Let me know if that's not clear, and feel free to terminate that job yourself. |

 | | chessgames.com: Great news, I have it set up now so that the "COMPUTER MOVE ANALYSIS" window, field <move/variation:____> now accepts all of these formats: 1. Enter a FEN for a straight-up FEN analysis. (It doesn't even have to be from the game you're looking at, but you probably got it from using Settings->Copy FEN.) 2. Enter a move like 50...Rd1 or 17.Bxh7+ and it will give the best variation stemming from that move. 3. Enter an entire variation like "17.Bxh7+ Kxh7 18.Ng5+ Kg6" and it will show the best play after those moves have been applied. 4. Enter a simple move number, like "50.?" or just "50" and it will compute the best move for that move number. For black moves, type 50...? 5. Special "easter egg feature" — if you leave the field entirely blank, it will show you how the game would have continued with best play. That can sometimes answer the perennial question, "What's the finish?" At this point the system is changing so quickly that it's hard to keep the documentation up to date and I apologize for that. We'll try to consolidate this in the Analysis Laboratory help area. |

 | | chessgames.com: It's official, we just opened up voting to the next Team Game that will start on November 1st. It is a kind of hybrid between the Battle of the Brains and the Thematic Challenge. More info here Thematic Challenge Voting Page and at the Thematic Challenge chessforum. |

 | | FSR: <chessgames.com> In case you missed it, William James Lombardy died today. |
|
Oct-13-17
 | | FSR: Incidentally, I submitted a pun long ago for one of Lombardy's wins, Lombardy vs Angantysson, 1984. (The game was played at a tournament in Grindavik, Iceland). |
|
Oct-14-17
 | | FSR: What the hey - Lombardy isn't Player of the Day?? |
|
| Oct-14-17 | | Alien Math: i wish to see how the core of the gamers would operate with the base games that <chessgames> brought forward as challenges, i am curious on their continuations on such basics as The Evans Gambit, The Modern Benoni and my favorite, The Immortal Draw Variation, hoping to see people i know appear in the future games! they look promising <3 |

 | | chessgames.com: <William James Lombardy died today.> I read about it here first :( He truly was one of the last great players from that era. We'll give him the 32-piece salute soon. |

| Oct-14-17 | | zborris8: Is there a TOS against multiple accounts? It appears there are members who do this, sometimes just to troll the others. |
|
Oct-15-17
 | | chessgames.com: <zborris8> This question continues to come up so I don't doubt that you are correct in assuming it's happening. No it's not against the TOS per se, unless it's done for some wrongful reason, which would include cheating in our games, stuffing ballots, dodging infraction measures. In the realm of trolling, it would be wrongful to make multiple accounts for the sake of simply being duplicitous, possibly to create the illusion that their opinion is shared (or even contested.) If you want to bring such a case to our attention use the Whistle function on any of their posts and tell us who you think they are. We can usually tell with 96%+ accuracy unless they are extremely clever and vigilant. |

 | | moronovich: <In other words, "most of the time it works most of the time" :-)> I guess this is slighlty less than 96% - at least some of the time ;) |

 | | WannaBe: <chessgames.com> Got another analysis that just keep going... "Requested 2017-10-13 23:40:57" 60 second eval (Completed) But another one requested at 2017-10-13 23:41:25 is still going. I do not remember requesting the second analysis, when the first one was done, I looked at the result and was satisfied. I left the second one still running, in case you need/want to track down this issue/bug. |
|
Oct-16-17
 | | chessgames.com: <WannaBe> We know there is an issue with analyses getting 'stuck' for a variety of reasons, usually because it's bad PGN/FEN or sometimes because a duplicate request sneaks in. If we can just get the erroneous ones to disappear in a timely manner it's really just an anomaly and not a problem. I'm not sure, but your stuck process should be gone now—or if not, will be soon. |
|
Oct-16-17
 | | WannaBe: <Chessgames.com> Again, thanks, the stuck one is gone now. Without me having to terminate it. |

| Oct-19-17 | | Transformer: There is something wrong with the New Games left menu on the homepage. Hovering over the descriptions takes you to Thematic Voting. |
|
Oct-19-17
 | | chessgames.com: <Transformer> Thanks a lot, you were right. A simple typo, easy to fix. Similarly: there was a bug for the past 12 or so hours regarding parts of the new Analysis Laboratory, particularly trying new moves. People actually received server errors. It's been remedied now. |

 | | Phony Benoni: The Olga board looks like it's going to work well, but something weird just happened. I was adding today's puzzle to my Friday puzzle collection. So, as usual, I opened the drop-drown menu listing my collections, typed "F" to go the collectoons beginning with "f" -- And instead of going to that area in the dorop-down list the board was flipped. |
|
Oct-20-17
 | | chessgames.com: Good catch Phony—I know how to fix that; it just never occurred to me that there would be interference on a pulldown menu. I forgot that you can type keys for shortcuts. |
